I would have to see the card in hand before making the decision. There are some true gems in other companies slabs, but there are far more turds. Each card needs to be checked case by case.

I've recently thought about doing this as well. Everything in grading is subjective. One mans 9 is another mans 10 is another mans 8. Depending on how close up I can get on the scan and judge for myself, I will be giving it a try soon.

![]() ![]() 1976 O-Pee-Chee #175 - Ken Singleton [SGC 98] Courtesy of COMC.com I bought this guy on COMC and it's at PSA now. Kept it in the holder with a crossover sub along with some other good cards (Mantle, T51s, other HOFs in BGS) for my renewal sub from last year. PSA will have to give it a 10 in order for it to be cracked out, as I put 10 for the min grade. There is a post on Net54 right now about a miscut/highly off-centered BGS card that was graded a 4 that got a PSA 8(OC) because the card itself was NM-MT. You can play the grading card companies against each other if you know the differences in their grading scales. |

I'm always scared to not crack. Fear that they'll try to act as the superior grader, take your money and claim the other is a joke and grades to lenient. I don't want them to know anything about the card prior to grading. Keeps an open mind imo. If I know it's a 9 already I would start to look at why it's a 9 if that makes sense.

The Ken Singleton did not get a PSA 10. So it's coming back in the SGC 98 holder.
Here's the rest of my crossover sub: 1975 Topps Mini Gary Carter RC was BVG 6.5, now PSA 6 (would have taken 5.5 or above). 1959 Topps Don Drysdale was BVG 6, requested PSA 5.5, did not meet 5.5 grade. 1970 Topps Nolan Ryan was BVG 4.5, requested PSA 4, did not meet PSA 4. 1963 Topps Mickey Mantle was BVG 4.5, requested PSA 4, got a PSA 4.5 1984 Topps Don Mattingly RC was GAI 9, requested PSA 8.5, got a PSA 9. 1909 T51 Tufts University was SGC 5, requested PSA 4.5, got a PSA 5. 1909 T51 Dickinson College 2nd Ed was SGC 4.5, requested a 4, got PSA 4.5. 1972 Topps Archie Manning RC was SGC 7, requested PSA 6.5, got a PSA 7. Crossed over my Authentic Altered 1933 Goudey Sport Kings Bobby Jones as well for the PSA registry set. So 7 of 10 cards I sent got crossed, with only the Gary Carter dropping a half point. The others all crossed at the original grade. Success! |

Thanks for the detailed info. With all of the vague trash talk people have about one grading company or another, it is always great to see specifics.

Not according to the group sub host. I expected a MK or a MC/OC, because you can't have both. The red marker is on the card multiple places, in the shape of two tears and the splotch on the jersey. Will post a scan once I get it back.

The Casey Cox above came back as a straight 5. Cracked out some BVG/SGC 1952 Topps baseball cards and submitted them to PSA on a monthly special and they just popped.
1952 Ed Blake: Was BVG 6, came back as PSA 4 since I damaged it getting it out of the BVG case. 1952 Frank Hiller: Was BVG 6, came back as PSA 6. 1952 Cliff Chambers: Was SGC 4.5 (55), came back as PSA 5. 1952 Leo Kiely: Was SGC 4 (50), came back as PSA 4. 1952 Bill Wight: Was BVG 4, came back as PSA 6. ![]() |

This really doesn't show definitively to me which company is better unless this newbie is missing something. Sometimes a bump sometimes a loss it seems. The market is pro psa and scg vintage and seemingly pro bgs modern but cases can be made for anything from this. It's all personal preference and subjective grading/gambling to me when either you try to cross crack/grade or resubmit from what I can see

My experience with grading companies is that you never freaking know. Grades can be different from company to company, grader to grader, hour to hour. Some cards will cross and some won't. That being said SGC is a very good company. There are very popular in the pre-war crowd (T206, etc) which is what I collect most so I'm very familiar with them. In the end though, a graded card to me is just a card in a thick plastic case with some dude's opinion on it. I busted all my cards out years ago.

9 out of 10 times PSA would thank you for your donation and will send the card back to you as is because it won't cross over. It happened to me and a few of my friends. It's easy money and no risk involved for just sending it back.

Just updating the thread with cards that were crackouts from other companies; figured it might be worth it to give you some stats:

You will do better crossing a sgc card than a bgs card to psa.

Thanks for sharing years of different results!
I've never even heard of SCD, I'm shocked they were tougher in cases vs. PSA. |

SCD was a legit grading company, run by the same guy that had the Sports Collectors Digest magazine. But just like all slabs I look at, evaluate the card inside and compare against how PSA would grade it. Miscut or written on cards in SGC slabs will almost always get low scores like 1.5, even when the card is Near Mint. So you have the ability to buy the card at a low price, crack it out, send it to PSA, and get like a 6(MC) or 7(MK). Better for registry sets, because it counts as a PSA 4 or 5.
