Post As a United States Citizen would you accept Puerto Rico as a 51state?

Hi everyone!

I really need your sincere vote + opinion:

Like some of you know, the past November 6 the island of Puerto Rico had elections (like U.S.)

And in these elections was asked to the people of PR
"Do you agree with the current territorial political status" (Yes or No)

The people voted:

NO 943,094 54.00%#@
YES 803,407 46.00%
Implying that the people are not satisfied with the current status.

Then in a second question on the same ballot was asked:
"For which of these options you would vote"
The people expressed in this way:

STATEHOOD
809,652 61.13%

SOVEREIGN COMMONWEALTH
441,505 33.33%

INDEPENDENCE
73,362 5.54%

The people decided that want to be the 51 state of U.S.
I also wanna say that 472,674 people left this question in blank.

Many people from PR say that Americans do not want Puerto Rico as a state.
That if US really want Puerto Rico we would have been a state many years ago.

Now that i have given you a brief history of what ocurred in the elections in PR, I want to ask you all:

As a United States Citizen would you accept Puerto Rico as a 51state?
Give me your honest opinion

Thanks!

The last thing we need is another state. If anything, we need to combine a few states. I'm looking at you ND and SD

LOL
I thought you were talking about something else. In PR we used to call S.Dak and N. Dak

See, that's why Puerto Rico shouldn't become a state. We don't even use the same abbreviations for the existing states

The Puerto Rican population is booming in Lancaster. I am not sure what prompted the surge but the increase in amazing food has been appreciated.

I don't care one way or the other. If it happens, I would gladly support it.

How would the United States benefit from allowing Puerto Rico to become the 51st State?

I vote no.

We have problems here at the moment, adding a state is the least of our worries.

This. What are the redeeming factors of Puerto Rico?

Common man, you know what i'm talking about.
We do use ND and SD as abbreviations (check USPS) but when we talk in the street about South Dakota we never say SD because obviously no one will understand. Normally we say S. Dak or the whole state name.

Collecting taxes is about the only benefit. I just don't see it happening any time soon with the outstanding domestic problems (split of House & Senate, state of economy, etc). Once those are settled, I guess PR could join.

That would throw off the entire dynamic of Old Glory.

50 is too clean.

Only if two states combine would PR be admitted. Then Guam, A. Samoa and the N. Marianas will have complaint.

Though, I don't believe A. Samoa is the same status as PR. I don't think my brother-in-law can vote for President.

We have more Puertoricans in the states than in the island. I believe around 4million in the states and 3.7 in Puerto Rico.
The reason? a lot......
-political status
-no jobs
-trying to have the same benefits as a citizen in the states
-safety
-etc

not to mention VA and VW

but I wouldnt mind having PR as a 51st state. The US has technically owned it since 1917 and I read that in order for a territory to become a state it needs to be "americanized". That is to say that there is a lot of american culture in PR (and there probably is).

Although like a lot of things there are reasons to deny PR statehood

Thanks!
The man who gave me the inspiration to sacrifice and fight for what I want.

We do have a lot more Puertoricans representing us in US in different occupations. Sports, Health, Safety, Education, Music and so on.....

That is a huge change that would take a lot of people some time getting used to. People don't like change you got to remember that. So, on the outside it may seem like the majority would not want PR to become the 51st state. But if it happened I think people would get used to it.

I voted yes, I don't see why not.

wait......on second thought...maybe they should take a presidential vote and if the majority of PR would vote for Obama then I would change my vote to No.

Of course PR should be considered a state, but as we know that probably won't happen, that's just how things are over here unfortunately.
