Garage sale find...Lou Gehrig? Opinions needed
Went to a few garage sales the other day and made a couple nice finds. This was the one I was most excited about. I bought this playing card for only .50 cents. From what I've gathered it was from a local dairy and was made most likely sometime in the 1930s. I can not find anything like this online or find more info on the company. The guy I bought it from had this one single card and said he got it from his grandfather. The big kicker for me is if it's truly Lou Gehrig in the background or not. It looks to be him which would obviously make it much more valuable.
Just wanted to get some of your opinions. Price, rarity, and do you think it's Lou Gehrig? Either way think it's a cool, old baseball piece. Thanks for your help! |

It's from a set (deck of cards) issued by Brown & Bigelow from 1953 to 1955. [Side note: based on the use of certain B&B images in the winter of 1952 in Cuba, it's possible the cards were first produced in 1952.]
They did a number of playing card deck sets with artwork of baseball legends, also including Ruth, Wagner, and Cobb. There are a large number of sponsoring merchants for the various decks, and AFAIK no one has published a catalog of the varieties (and there aren't premiums attached to any). They're not very expensive even in high grade (rounded corners on decks makes high grades pretty common), as people either want complete decks or are content with one example of each player. Yours is Gehrig. You didn't really overpay for it in the sense that it would be tough to find another example cheaper.

Op one dead give away this isn't from the 30s is the phone number on the card. Vintage collectors that buy these types of items look at details like that. With 3 min of research you would have found out it was from early 50s. If it was a 30s phone number it would be something like "sg-67855". They used letter codes for area codes not numbers. I can understand asking about an item but when you put no research into it before asking that's not good. This card will never sell for what your asking. Just my 2 cents. I wish you the best.
Edit: sorry op I noticed yours didn't have number. I am sorry I confused yours with another reply. Last edited by bethanyb1201; 05-03-2015 at 08:48 AM. |

It's still better than a Tempy Moore sketch.

Oh, the good 'ole 'I've never seen one of these before, so prior to doing any significant research, I will post it to a forum for opinions while I post it to eBay as a SUPER MOJO RARE 1/1.'
Logic.

Funny thing is that a simple Gehrig search on ebay would have revealed a lot of these.

He lowered the price to 50.00. Now if he lowered it another 46 it might sell.

When faced with evidence that his card is worth fifty cents, he still tries to rip someone off for fifty dollars.

If this thread were on Star Search I would award it 3 1/4 stars.

As for everyone else I fixed the listing completely. Truly thought that I had found something rare and was NOT trying to rip anyone off. You can see from my eBay ratings that I take pride in my selling. I love reading and posting on the forums and wasn't trying to start an issue. I started this thread to simply find out more about my card and I did. Now that I know what it truly is and was my fault for poor searching I fixed the eBay listing. Should have done more extensive searching. Obviously I would of never posted a thread on a site that loves to tear sellers apart if I was simply trying to rip someone off. Thanks for all the helpful information and sorry for the poor posting. Last edited by King23dog; 05-04-2015 at 07:17 PM. |

One more issue... It's not Joe D., it's not from the 30s, and it's not rare.
