That was my first thought as well. If the A's had actually done something back then then it would make sense.

Oakland was known as Chokeland back then because of their collapses to the Yanks and Sox.

Look at the Rays.

They didn't quite impose the same process as Beane during the film's period but one of the main points is fielding a winning team despite not having the $$$ of the New Yorks, Bostons, etc.

In that case maybe the film should've been about the Rays. lol. Or the Marlins of the late 90's to early 2000's.

Moneyball got the story of the A's mostly wrong but the general idea of Moneyball is otherwise the story of baseball in now (look at the Rays, like Zacky said).

Yeah, it isn't like the Boston front office has been highly influenced by the subject matter of the book. I mean, isn't Bill James still a security guard?

WOW!! Ddin't really start this thread as a "do you think moneyball is teh greatest baseball concept since sliced bread." Simply thought the movie trailor looked really good, thats all. Didn't mean for everyone to start jumping off on a tangent about how Billy Beane was the greatest baseball savior since Jesus Christ himself. Well regardless, movie looks like it will be very entertaining. Enjoy the popcorn. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

I thought it was a good movie, and I read the book. Just don't expectthe movie to be action-packed. It's more about the idea of "moneyball" which is used in almost every team in some way.

I rarely go to the theater anymore. I'll wait for it to be a Red Box Rental.

Just curious on how you think it failed? I assume you mean becuase they didn't win the World Series. With that mentality every team in baseball except one fails every year, a little harsh in my opinion. Sure no titles for the A's under "Moneyball" but the point is more that they were able to use sabermetrics to put together a playoff calibre team while making money as an organization.

yes i will see it. Moneyball in theory isnt about if it worked or not. It is more or less showing you can take a scrapheap of players and win without the money, those were some bad teams that beane built but they won games and made the playoffs. That in itself is remarkable when you look at who was on those teams. In the end it a was a nice renovation but it needed fine tuning to work which is where the Rays have taken it now.

And now every team uses it. Back when Oakland pioneered the idea, it gave them, as a small market team, a way to compete with the big money clubs. Now with the big money clubs using many of the ideas along with everyone else, it no longers gives Oakland that competitive advantage.

LOL

Depodesta didn't allow them to use his name for the movie. What a shame I won't get to hear him sing the praises of Hee-Seop Choi.
