Default What the hobby is really about.

Sorry for the long read but I think it is a cool story. So I was at my LCS this weekend and had busted a few boxes and packs. One of the boxes was 2010 Topps Jumbos. I pulled a Steve Smith (Panthers) jersey card. Since I open lots of stuff, a Steve Smith jersey card isn't really worth much to me since I don't PC him and I'd be lucky to get a couple bucks on Ebay.

A kid, probably 6 or 7 years old comes in with his dad and asks to look through the Panthers cards. You can hear he is getting excited by parallel cards of like Williams, Stewart, or Smith numbered /75. I ask the kid "So, you collect Panthers? which he replies "Yeah, they're my favorite team." I say "Here you go" and hand him the Steve Smith card. His eyes light up and asks what I wanted for it. I told him nothing, it's his. He was so excited. Getting the card made his day and his reaction made my day also. It reminded me what the hobby can really be about.

Awesome, I remember being little and getting excited over cards that now a days I guess we "take for granted" I try to go to LCS and give as much as possible and ask owner to give to kids. Awesome that you got to do it in person

Too many people are becoming of the nature of ripping, finding out the cards they pulled are worth 20% of what they paid, get pissed off and try to squeeze every penny out of those cards.

if those people didn't exist........ 90% of singles wouldn't make it to the secondary market.

I wish I would see someone else buying cards (or even showing an interest) at my LCS. It's all about jerseys and memorabilia these days.

That's a great story. I give most of my base and duplicates to my younger brother or nephew and they love them. I'm fairly new to the hobby so I still appreciate even the lesser hits but I'm sure with time everyone becomes more concerned with ROI.

Great story and good for you!
I remember giving my nieces a bunch of cards and they were some of the most happiest kids I've ever seen. Awesome to make kids happy by giving them simple things.

But also keep in mind how different products are these days. Before "chase" cards, no one probably cared about "return value".

But once the card companies starting pumping these "money makers" into the products, and making them the focus of the product, the customer has a right to feel they deserve a certain amount of return on their purchase.

Yes, it's unreal to constantly expect to get all your money back in a box, but the card companies have set us up to worry about how much the cards are worth in the boxes.

I wish I had an LCS close by so that I could do stuff like this with all my base / inserts and multiples I don't use.

Kids enjoy the hobby way more then we do most of the times and these cards, for them, have value and will provide lots of joy.

I miss being a kid collecting and stuffing cards into 9 pocket pages until it was my bedtime.
