Default How to get rid of the smell of smoke from cards?

Got a bunch of cards from a seller on ebay today, and all of the cards and the mailer smell heavy of smoke. Is there any way to get rid of the smell so it doesn't catch on to more cards, and is it worth noting in the feedback?

I can't think of a way without damaging the cards, but I would absolutely mention it in the feedback. Personally, I'd try to return the cards if it wasn't mentioned in the auction, but that's just me.

Maybe throw the cards in a box with a dryer sheet for a few days. I don't think I would make a big stink about it, but thats just me.

Took the cards out of the sleeves and toploaders, and they still smell of heavy smoke. Would baking soda help get rid of the smell? Still tempted to leave a negative, unacceptable to not put in the auction that the cards come from a heavy smoking house

You can have them sit in baking soda. My fiancee and I had this problem with the wedding invitations her aunt helped us make. They are heavy smokers in their home and in order for them to not smell like smoke we put them in a paper bag and layered them with baking soda in between and let them sit for a weekend. Baking soda shakes off with no problem and most of the smell is gone. We did this a couple of times to really get rid of the smell.

The answer is vinegar! Put the cards next to a bowl filled with some vinegar. Let it sit overnight and the smell should be gone.

I'll try baking soda then. What should I leave/say for the feedback? The seller is from our great state of Minnesota too

You can make it better but you will never get rid of the smell completely. Smoke gets everywhere when someone actually smokes inside their home. Nothing can be done to prevent this either, never understood why smokers would want to smoke inside, why they would want to destroy their house like that and everything that is inside it. Sorry to hear it man, its a shame that people dont take care of their stuff better than that.

I don't know about this. In terms of feedback, I'm not sure what you should leave. I don't think a neutral/negative is in order but maybe a ding on the item as described? You could always send them a message saying the next person might not be as nice or maybe they shouldn't be smoking around their cards?

You want direct sunlight to deodorize. Or a UV lamp.

I'd be careful with baking soda if the cards have any kind of finish on them.

Normally, I would say there is no way that you can smell it, but after the experience my fiancee and I had with the invitations it's really noticeable. I personally start to get nauseous if I smell it for too long.

I don't think it's a huge deal either if it's just a few cards. I've had this happen before and it seems to go away. A large quantity of cards would be much worse however.

I do believe the ultimate solution here is to not smell your cards. Just because you have the sense of smell, doens't mean you have to use it on everything.

Oh look dog poop. Sniff Sniff, ewwww.

Hey look a homeless man. Sniff Sniff, blech.

Oh look my old underwear. Sniff Sniff, hmmmmm, I might need an ointment.

are they cards stained in anyway? one time i purchased a player lot of 25 cards. they smelled like smoke and i noticed that some were slightly yellow around the edges compared to the others. if that's the case i would leave a neg.

but for me i just changed the sleeves/top loaders kept them in the room with a candle going for a few days and the smell went away.

If you just went ahead and started smoking, you won't be able to smell it after a few weeks

I'm fine with living a normal life length than dying 15 years earlier

Here's what the guy responded:then take them out of the holders and put them in new ones. they've been on those holders since being taken out of the packs (not only the top-loaders but the penny sleeves). i sold you the cards, not the holders. there's no way there's any smell to the cards (and i don't recall advertising that the cards were from a smoke-free environment)

So am I the only one then that assumes that cards are from a smoke-free house if nothing is listed, since many more sellers do not smoke in their house, and it's the first time I've had problems with smoke on the cards? I told him I already threw out all of the toploaders and the cards still smell.
