View Full Version : Is Upper Deck good about newly expired redemptions?

A couple weeks ago I posted my wonderful experience of pulling a 2011 Press Pass Legends Cam Newton RC Auto.......redemption.
I vowed to learn my lesson from that experience, but in my defense, for whatever reason, there is a non-redemption version of the EXACT SAME CARD i pulled in Press Pass Legends boxes so I had no way of knowing the redemption existed in the first place.. until I got it of course. Hell, I probably pulled one of the few that actually were redemptions.
Earlier this month, I bought a box of 2013 Upper Deck Exquisite FB and e-mailed the place I bought it from because I KNEW all of the product's redemptions expired on 5/20/16 and I was interested in possibly purchasing another box later in the month, but NOT IF Upper Deck did not honor newly expired redemptions!
They said they "didn't know" so I played it safe and DID NOT buy any more boxes of 2013 Upper Deck Exquisite FB (even though it is known to be light on redemptions).
Now, I also happen to be a Bills fan, and I collect rookies of all our players even if they turn out to be losers.
I happened to know that EJ Manuel and Robert Woods were NOT redemptions in this product. Neither was Thurman Thomas. Didn't know about Jim Kelly because I never saw anyone pull him out of 2013 Upper Deck Exquisite FB and figured it was extremely rare.
Bet you know where this is going now...
I bought my Bills in a 2013 UD Exquisite FB team break today on Ebay...
2 boxes opened...no Bills..no redemptions
box #3 opened...second to last card...
Jim Kelly auto redemption #'d outta f'ing 10
EXPIRED on 5/20/16
I feel like the Jacksonville Jaguars man. here I am being cautious. Here i am, the only person in the break room that actually KNEW the 2013 Exquisite expiration date.....
...and I get the only redemption in the case....and that's my last redemption since pulling the Cam Newton RC Auto redemption. How about that?
But believe it or not I was - and still am - feeling a little bit optimistic!
Because this is not as hopeless as the Press Pass situation, you would think.
After all, how AWFUL does a company have to be to be IN BUSINESS and NOT honor a redemption that expired ONLY 6 DAYS AGO???
Needless to say, Upper Deck's website did not take my code, but that was to be expected since it's just coded to respond to the date.
My question is:
Has anyone had experience trying to redeem an Upper Deck redemption that had JUST expired?
If so, can you please share your experience?

Pretty sure in the past year, Upper Deck changed their policy, and accepts expired redemptions up to 1 year past the date on the card. You just have to call them, and e-mail the code, and they enter it manually into their system.
I've seen that posted in some recent 2014 SP Authentic golf breaks, and UD accepted expired redemptions for Jordan autos, and sent the cards out in less than a month.

That would be really nice if the case. I researched a bit after making this post and found a thread here from 2015. It seemed very hit or miss but I did notice the more recent posts were success stories. Keeping my fingers crossed. Just have a very low tolerance after the Cam Newton press pass redemption happened to me. I'm waiting to give them a call first thing in the morning. Will update here.

Called Upper Deck this morning and got the word which should come as great news for everyone that doesn't already know...
There is a ONE YEAR grace period on all Upper Deck redemptions
You just need to send your redemption code & mailing address to either:
qa@upperdeck.com
techsupport@upperdeck.com
In my case, I e-mailed both and told them whoever gets the message first can process the redemption for me.
Huge sigh of relief for me. As I said, I would not have been able to stomach two consecutive S.O.L. redemptions!
On a side note, I researched this subject last night and found some upsetting stories from collectors with newly expired redemptions that could NOT be redeemed. In one case the collector claimed that his redemption date was a day or two after Christmas and he pulled the redemption 1 day following expiration and UD would not take it... ouch... so glad they changed this policy.

Not even 24 hours passed since I got the expired 2013 Exquisite Jim Kelly auto /10 out of team break and................
Thank you for your email. We redeemed your expired redemption into our internal system. We suggest you keep the redemption card that you have until you receive the physical one in the mail. We thank you for your patience.
Upper Deck FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These guys are officially awesome!
But do be mindful of the 1 year grace period, I know I will be. You might not be as fortunate if your redemption expired 1 year & 1 day ago, etc.

I pulled a triple auto of Gretzky/Coffey/Messier out of an older Cup Tin just about 1 year and a few months past due. Upper Deck really lost me as a customer at that point when they told me to beat it.
FU Upper Deck.

How about all card companies come out and say that as long as they are still in business they will honor expired redemption cards. If they can't get you the card that was to be redeemed then they replace it with something. It really is the least they can do for the customers. This is where Panini excels and they don't seem to get much credit for it.

Yeah for all the bad stuff Panini does the redemption stuff is definitely a great thing they do. It's certainly nice to know when you pull one out of a Panini product your at least going to get something.

Yeah, I am not sure I really understand the point of expired redemptions. I am sure there is a reason for them, so maybe someone can fill me in?
I mean, the company who released the redemption should still be obligated to actually make the card. I understand that if a redemption expires, the card could possibly have been used as a replacement for another card that may not get created, but if you pull one, they should probably do something for you. You still bought their product (or bought the card from someone who bought their product).
I do appreciate that Panini at least tries to honor expired redemptions. Upper Deck granting a year grace period is at least a step in the right direction for them. Topps will tell you to pound sand from what I understand.

UD has always been hit or miss regarding newly expired redemptions and it seems like they change their policy often. My favorite redemption story is when I pulled a 1999 Press Pass (the original company) Lamar Odom basketball auto redemption. I was a kid when I pulled it and either didn't think to send it in, or it had expired when I had pulled it (can't recall). Either way, about 10 years later I decide to send it in to the address just for fun. Amazingly, they sent the card back! :)

A guy at Panini said legally they have to put an expiration date, but that they can then do whatever after that date.

Card was probably back doored. They told me once a redemption has expired they shred the card. That includes autograph cards of Jordan, lebron etc. I doubt it but that's what the customer service rep told me yearrrrsssss ago

That's awesome. Some people have gone as far as saying Press Pass was the best about expired redemptions before they shut down. Not only did they accept expirations but their turnaround time was really fast. You just didn't hear them as much because they only released 1-3 products per sport each year(?) and on top of that they had very few redemptions anyway. For example, I took a long break from collecting so I do not have a lot of experience to speak from here, but the 2011 Cam Newton RC Auto redemption I pulled is still the onyl Press Pass redemption i've ever seen.

Haha, you guys are too kind. It's obvious as hell that these employees, possible before quitting or just after the expiration is well over a year-takes the card home and keeps it-eventually passing it along to someone else for big bucks so it can't be traced to them IF they can get in trouble. Or if not-just putting it up on eBay.

Yeah, Press Pass seemed to be one of the few "good guys" of the card industry. Always seemed to go out of their way to help out their customers. But seems there's little room for that these days if there's bucks to be made...probably why they couldn't survive...
It is kind of interesting how people have different experiences with the different companies. UD (no-sport) and Cryptozoic have been great by me, Topps have been just okay and I pretty much despise Panini's customer service...
