We landed on the moon? That's great.
This is the least surprising news of every bit of news you will read today. This has been known since he signed the 1 and 1 last year.

It was surprising to me because I thought he was just going to sign a long extension, I didn't think he would opt out like that

It was a 100% stone cold lock for the past year that this was going to happen. He won't sign a long term deal until the full TV deal kicks in.

Yup. He'll sign another 1+ player option.

Well, even if he was going to sign a long-term deal, wouldn't he still have to opt-out of his current one??

We all knew this was coming since he signed the 1 year deal last year. LeBron is very business savvy and he's going to make the most money he can until, like asujbl said, the new TV deal kicks in which is the season after next I believe.
P.S he's not going anywhere, I'd be pretty surprised if he doesn't end his career in Cleveland at this point

My understanding is if it's an extension, then no, LeBron didn't need to opt out. The extension would have been tacked onto the current deal once it expires. In the end though, it depends on the contract wordings.

Good point. Still don't know why this thread was needed.

Here's a very good breakdown of the Lebron contract options...

Basically it makes no sense for Lebron to sign an extension right now. He's going to sign a 1 year deal at around $30M and then cash in big time for a long term contract next summer.

Because I was unaware that this was the route that he was going to take, sorry.

why do you not want him to leave? Assuming you're a Cavs fan?

Lebron could sign for max and they could still get Durant. Would just require a sign and trade with the Thunder. Similar to how the cavs did the sign and trade with heat, a team would rather get something back, especially when the cavs would need to trade Love and Shumpert to take on Durant's max. Love and Shump is better than the picks the cavs got back for lebron (think was 2 firsts 2 seconds).

Of course, I made my crap up. But my situation would not require a sign and trade deal. That 24 mill allocation would be used for Durant. Then, Lebron signed a minimum salary with a promise of 10% share of Cavs team in the future.
Durant can just walk out of the OKC's door and leave them nothing. Maybe he can buy some Chipotle to OKC staff.

I bet lebron already has a promise of 10% share for coming back the first time.

And Wade is having contract issues.... time to form that super team he has always wanted.
Durant, LeBron, Wade and next year add Melo, Westbrook and Kobe will come out of retirement.

I really believe that Lebron would pull that kind of team when he is like 36 or so. It would like Houston Rockets with 3 HOFs (Barkley, Drexler and the Dream), but with 10 future HOFs instead.

LeBron James to leave $3 million on table to stay with Cleveland Cavaliers (http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/16451710/lebron-james-leave-3-million-table-stay-cleveland-cavaliers)
Saw this a few days ago. It explains things fairly well. Funny to see Horford making more than Bron though.

It sounds like Lebron can play for any team with 1 year contract. And when the new cap is set, he can return to Cavs for 5/6 years deal.
