#Colts QB Andrew Luck's 5-year extension pays him $75M over the first 3 years, source said. Slightly less over final 2 years.

I hope they are good enough to get his base Chrome rookie back up to around $30 raw. I was too lazy to sell mine last year when they were at that level.

I do think he's talented, but I look at Brees and think that he sacrificed any realistic shot at winning for a monster paycheck. Flacco, too. Everyone should get paid, but lots of 8-8 years and first round playoff exits don't exactly build legacies.
You gotta pay him, but you're not paying him to win Championships, you're paying him not to.

Never thought of it that way, but lets say he improves and does well this contract. He will then be to the point where Money doesn't matter as much, and could sign cheaper a-la Brady in recent years.

Worth every cent!! Ask Cleveland or the Jets if they'd pay that much for him.

100% correct. It's laughable that NFL network on Sirius was saying they overpaid. JOE F'ing FLACCO was the highest paid player in the NFL up till today and the Colt's overpaid???
Bottom line is this:
1. He's a top 5 QB
2. In 3 years, Brady & Brees will be gone, possibly Big Ben, Eli, Romo, and Rivers too, and the big 3 will be Luck/Rodgers/Cam
3. Salary cap is only going up from here (at least until CTE cripples the league but that's not for a few years) so this will look like a bargain in a few years

Exactly. If overpaying means we get a franchise quarterback for 7 years then sign me up. I'd take this over what the Bills and Dolphins have been trying to do since Kelly and Marino retired.
There is no such thing as "over-paying". This misnomer is common because of most fans linear line of thought. 'Oh Player X is making this much and I think they are better than Player Y' - ergo "over-paying". But NFL contracts especially for franchise players are much more complicated than just that.
But besides all those contract factors - ultimately it comes down to the teams options. What are the teams options to replace said player? Everyone uses Flacco as the example, but what options did Ozzie Newsome have at the time? Superbowl winners were going to try and defend the Lombardi with FA castoffs or a rookie? No GM is going to take that route.
Personally I think all franchise QBs are underpaid and even NFL players in general. But there is no other option for Indy. With cap increase and the perceptoin of Luck's potential - doest seem like overpaying to me. But again - Irsay is paying for POTENTIAL. Not results.

As long as ryan grigson is the gm, I don't care what they pay luck

Contract is for 6 years. He's getting paid for what he will do. Only time will tell if what he does is worth the money he gets.

Fully agreed
It's like the new NBA TV deal...teams are scrambling to hurl out big bucks to key players because salaries across the board are set to skyrocket. It is what it is.
