Boxes of 2015-16 Panini Noir Basketball are LOADED and set to hit shelves this week. On average, each 12-card box of 2015-16 Noir Basketball will deliver SEVEN ON-CARD autograph or memorabilia cards, all numbered to 99 or less.

Other highlights include:

For the first time in Noir, the product features NBA Championship tags. Each card pays tribute to the featured franchise’s championship legacy with the Larry O’Brien Trophy patch showcased prominently on the back of every jersey.
Also new this year are Rookie Championship Dreams Tags in Color and Black and White, numbered to 5 or less. Noir allows collectors the option to collect their favorite rookies by offering two versions of each — both Color and Black and White.

You can check out the product in more detail by perusing the Quality Control Gallery that follows.
Enjoy the sneak peek and stay tuned to The Knight’s Lance for continued coverage.

For the first time in Noir, the product features NBA Championship tags. Each card pays tribute to the featured franchise’s championship legacy with the Larry O’Brien Trophy patch showcased prominently on the back of every jersey.

That didn't take long.

I'm assuming Panini sent cards in bulk from all products to be signed, so we probably won't see nicer gold pens until next year's products.

Also, that zoomed in AD, Kobe, and Kyrie autos have to be a mistake lol.. why are they showing the horrible quality of those autographs? why?

From a business perspective, I guess Panini is doing it right. You want Flawless, NT, Immaculate, Select, Prizm allocations, you have to take all these other products every other week. Some will sell, most won't, but it's just guaranteed profit for them. That has to be the thinking with all these redundant products. I guess it's genius.

the one thing about panini is that usually from year to year, certain brands, like immaculate, may have a very similar look, but they usually maintain the design or improve upon it. with this product, it looks considerably worse than last year. and they i guess arent showing the better cards in the product here, but how on earth does this look like a product that would cost $570 a box. and wasnt it like $900 last year to start with? when a company drops a prices product by 35-40% right off the bat - that is admitting defeat with the product. like excalibur top box being relegated from target back to hobby stores.

good luck to anyone opening this, be ready for a $350+ loss every box that doesnt have a towns auto patch. get a kobe auto that might be $125-$150. you got $320+ to go in that box. enjoy 5 base cards per box of which 2 might have some value. awful awful pricing for this product.

It's got to be the coating. Seriously how can Panini take these pictures and post them and be like "look at these!". There has to be someone there at some point say, "hey guys, these autographs look like vomit, can't we do something about it?"

In what industry can you charge this kind of money and half-ass it and keep getting repeat customers? $500+ a box and you can't do something to improve the autograph?

If you go to a restaurant and spend $100 on a steak, and they serve you a hamburger patty, what do you think would happen? Panini is charging filet Mignon prices and serving up chopped beef.

I agree. Obviously people are still buying these products otherwise I think Panini would stop making them and or lower the prices. It amazes me how people can still buy this stuff and at this price point. I understand there are the "gamblers" out there but at these price points you are really just throwing money away.

Perhaps some people simply like the design?

I'm not a big fan of the thick gold pen (I wish they would go to a thinner one, like what Upper Deck used in 13/14 UD Black) but there are a number of things about Noir that I personally really like:

1) The gold on black color scheme - I think it's very bold, but also very elegant. It makes the patches and the player photos "pop" so much more. I think it looks a million times better then the dull and boring white that smothers NT every year.

2) I think the acetate finish on the coloured cards is an awesome touch. I loved it when they implemented this in Immaculate, and I love it just as much in Noir. It not only makes the cards "shine", it also gives them a more premum feel.

3) All autos are on card. It makes me want to throw up in my own mouth when I see people break $600+ boxes of NT, Immaculate and Spectra and pull out multiple sticker autos. I can somewhat accept the odd sticker auto in $1000-$200 product like Black Gold or Gold Standard. I disgraceful in a $300+ product. The gold pens in Noir might not be the sexiest, but at least they are on card - personally, I'll take that over stickers.

4) No one-colour jersey pieces. As above - these have no place in a $300+ product, especially in a $500+ product. With Noir, Panini got that right.

If you want to buy a high end Panini product other then Noir which has no sticker autos and no jerseys, you have to jump all the way up to Flawless at well over $1,000 a box.

I don't have a lot of spare cash to throw away on high end boxes, so I can only afford to buy a high end product maybe once or twice a year. If I buy a box of NT or Immaculate, then I am 100% depending on the box hit being a great one...otherwise all I get for my money it a stack of jerseys and stickers. At least with Noir if I don't get a massive hit, I have the consolation of still getting a handful of cool looking patches and on-card autos.

If I have money to burn and could afford to buy 10 -15 boxes of high end stuff a year, then I'm probably be all over Immaculate.

Honestly, I think some of the cards in Noir are among the nicest cards Panini have made.

I have to agree - it's a stunning design.

To be honest I'm not the biggest fan of the black and white variants with the blue ink. The colour variants look and feel so nice in hand that once you reach a B&W version, it kinda feels like a lesser card. I would prefer if they used acetate finish (like the coloured cards) but maybe used silver ink instead of gold.

Aside from that small complaint (and the obvious issue with the ink) I think that Noir was the best product design to release last year.

I think that Black Gold is stunning as well in terms of design and takes things to an even higher level with the shadowbox theme - but the mass of sticker autos and jersey cards ruins it. If not for that it would be my product of the year.

As far as I'm concerned, the best designs in 2015/16 will be be:
* Immaculate
* Noir
* Gold Standard

Not necessarily in that order.

The best looking base cards? Black Gold, by a mile. Shameless ripoffs of UD Exquisite shadowboxes? Sure, but I love Exquisite so that's fine with me!

It's like those UD Legendary signatures from maybe 99/00? Great player selection but HORRIBLE bubbly signatures. Just such a waste.

The design looks like a lower end version of Eminence. How many more products is Panini going to produce for 2016 season.

the one thing about panini is that usually from year to year, certain brands, like immaculate, may have a very similar look, but they usually maintain the design or improve upon it. with this product, it looks considerably worse than last year. and they i guess arent showing the better cards in the product here, but how on earth does this look like a product that would cost $570 a box. and wasnt it like $900 last year to start with? when a company drops a prices product by 35-40% right off the bat - that is admitting defeat with the product. like excalibur top box being relegated from target back to hobby stores.

good luck to anyone opening this, be ready for a $350+ loss every box that doesnt have a towns auto patch. get a kobe auto that might be $125-$150. you got $320+ to go in that box. enjoy 5 base cards per box of which 2 might have some value. awful awful pricing for this product.

While I do understand your point here, there are a few things I feel are worth noting:

1: Motivation
Not everybody in the hobby busts boxes wit the goal of flipping cads and making a profit. Some of us do it for the fun / suspense of breaking boxes (and the excitement of hitting a cool card). Some of us do it to build up out collections - because the challenge of getting hits in boxes can be more satisfying then just going on ebay and buying them.

For those who do buy to make a profit, that's a perfectly understandable goal too. I'm just pointing out the fact that everybody has different purposes for collecting, which is why it makes sense to have a lot of different products to appeal to those different goals.

2: Box loss
To be fair I think this is an issue no matter what product you buy.

How often will you walk away with more then $400 value out of a $850 box of 15/16 NT? From the breaks I've seen, the average box of NT is lucky to return $200-$250. The "case hit" boxes are often lucky to return $500. Buy a $3,500 case of NT and I honestly think you would be lucky, on average, if you can get $1,250 back. Unless you hit an RPA of a top 5 rookie or a tag of a top 10 player (both of which are few and far between) your chance of making your money back is slim at best.

I love Immaculate as a product, but honestly it's not that much better either. Flawless? Good lucky making your money back on a box of that stuff. Same with Eminence. Same with Preferred also - unless you hit a big Silhouette patch or an epic (and ultra rare) booklet, you're going to get slaughtered. Spectra? The same too.

Noir is no different. A price of ~$580 a box is a lot - a top rookie auto can potentially break you even. A top RPA can make you a profit. A top shelf tag can also get you on top. Anything less and you are probably going to lose money - I don't see how that is different to any other high end product.

At least with Noir there are only 3 boxes in a case, which means if you break a box from an unopened case you have a 33% chance at a case hit, in which case you'll probably do OK. NT has four boxes per case, so you have a 25% chance. Immaculate in the past was a 5 box case, so you had only a 20% chance at a case hit - now up to 25%, since they're now packaged in 4-box cases for the 15/16 season. I think Noir has less boxes per case then any other product (bar Eminence, but I don't count that) - so you have a higher chance at a case hit in Noir then in any other product.

Not saying that makes it a better product, just trying to point out that there are potential reasons why people may choose to buy Noir over other high end stuff out there. A lot of people talk about it as if such a decision is utterly irrational and unjustifiable - it's not.

Different strokes for different folks, simply put.

Ironically, I actually think Eminence looks like a lower end version of Noir, mixed in with some hints of Immaculate.

I find Noir to be a MUCH nicer looking product then Eminence.
