Just wondering how Groome could know that he would have gotten $5m from the Padres if he had fallen to #24 unless they had an agreement in place? If there isn't a rule against teams making deals like that before the draft there ought to be.

Slot value where he was picked is just under $3.2 million. Slot value for #24 is just under $2.2 mil so the Padres were willing to pay him as if he were the #4 pick at #24?

Guys are allowed to exchange how much it will take to sign with teams... What usually happens is a guy says I want 5 million and a team will either say we can work with this or no we can't and move on and maybe try again in later rounds.... I've had the privelage of working with a few guys who have been drafted or got the calls on how much money it takes.

Talented kid. Hope he signs and his "advisors" don't steer him the wrong way.

I guess one reason he didn't go sooner is the way he set himself up...switched his commitment to a junior college or something so he could re-enter the draft if things didn't go his way...but still.
