View Full Version : Storage/Display PC Methods?

Hey y'all. I have a couple different PC's that I'm trying to figure out how to display. I've read and heard different opinions about certain ways to store/display their cards. So without further adieu, here are the PC's I'm wishing to sort/store/display and my methods so far.

1) Jim Thome PC. I don't know how many base I have (hundreds), but I have 1 auto, some GU/relics, and lots of RCs.
- Method: Right now, I have them all in a cardboard box (750 card box I think). I'm thinking about putting all of the base in a binder, while displaying the relics/GU/Autos/RCs on a shelf next to the binder. Thoughts?

2) Topps PC. This is one card from every year Topps has made cards (starts in 1951).
- Method: Thinking about putting them in a binder. Is that ok for vintage? Thoughts?

3) HoF PC. I love collecting HoF base.
- Method: I'd like to put all of these cards in a binder with alphabetic dividers, sorted by last name. I'm currently working on getting the last card of each HoF I can. I think I'll include those in the binder? Obviously, when I get to the point of acquiring 1952 Mantles and such, those will stay out, as I'll get them slabbed. Thoughts?

Obviously, binders are my main method. Right now everything is in cardboard boxes. Let me know all of your thoughts, methods, etc.!

Best card display I've ever seen belongs to my man Mike (Moyni). As cool as it looks in the video (link below), it is even better in person.

WOW...

That rotating case full of his autos is INCREDIBLE.

I didn't see any binders though. Haha.

He's got boxes, binders, cases, frames etc. Damn near mini Cooperstown to be honest. That case is beyond words, Mike and his dad refurbished it and it is gorgeous.

Outstanding. Thank you very much for sharing.

What does he put in the binders?

That's a good question, he's got so much stuff that we never got to the binders and I've been there twice. I think he said at least some of them contain his Josh Hamilton and Pudge collections. Yeah, unfortunately he's a Rangers fan.

I don't have a huge problem with the Rangers, unless they beat the Indians this year in the Playoffs, were they to meet. Haha.

Ok so he does put some of his PC, most likely base, in binders. That's good to know and is relevant to my Thome PC.

I actually like the Rangers but as a lifelong Angels fan, it is my duty to belittle them and their fans any opportunity I get. This year it is a bit harder to do that with the current record and all but I'm not letting that stop me. As for base, I doubt it, Mike doesn't strike me as a base kind of guy but hopefully he'll chime in himself to say for sure.

I know collectors that keep relatively high end in binders although I don't do so myself. Most of my cards are either slabbed or in magnetics and then put into boxes. In the near future, I will be making wooden storage boxes to replace the current cardboard versions.

Your hatred for the Rangers is similar to my hatred for the Tigers/White Sox.

Yeah I have A TON of base that I am looking to store. I like the idea of wooden storage boxes, although I don't have that kind of time on my hands right now. How do people have high end binders? Doesn't card thickness prevent that?

I don't hate the Rangers, I just want the Angels to finish higher in the standings than them. On a year like this one with the Angels clearly out of it, I'm even pulling for the Rangers to win it all.

Not all high end is thicker than standard but even for cards that are, there are binder pages for all types of card thicknesses and sizes. Also, Cojo makes and sells wooden storage boxes (link below). His stuff looks top notch and I'd buy some from him if I didn't already have the skills to build them myself.

Didn't realize the pages now come in different thicknesses.

I'd post links but it's against the rules as BO sells supplies. Between Ultra-Pro, BCW, U-line and a couple of others, you can get sleeves, cases, top loaders etc for darn near any size and/or type of collectible.

I need one of those rotating case things. I would probably spend more time looking at my cards than I do working.

For the OP...In the back end of the video I show my closet which does have my binder system and other organizational methods.

First of all, INCREDIBLE video, sir. That room is STUNNING.

Second of all, I see the binders are displayed vertically. Any issue of the pages/cards getting damaged due to gravity tugging on it constantly?

Again, phenomenal collection/displays. Truly first class.

Awesome display case! Wish I had one of those. Also wish my room was clean and organized enough I could make a video to share as well, but think I can build a functional case from toothpicks easier than clean the room at this point.

The binders don't have any issues because they are pretty full. I can see how any binder that is not full could have some potential sagging issues.

Her is a more in depth video on the case itself.

For cheaper cards like base, a binder is fine. The main problem with the binder is the top row and left column. The top row is usually exposed to light and when that comes to vintage cards you will find the tops slightly faded. The left column, depending on how gently you handle the pages. Some people turn a single page each time, but when you have hundreds of pages turning a large amount of pages may cause creases on the card.

So I would say if you want to store your vintage card in albums, keep them in a place where there is no light. Common modern cards are ok in binders. Higher value cards in top loader or magnetic holders.

For PC and top stars(Trout, Kershaw, etc) the commons go in binders vertically on a book shelf. Higher dollar cards are in toploaders and magnetics stored in a graded box to have room to label them. I have several wall mount shelves that I keep about 20 cards I like on display. I rotate them out every few weeks to avoid light damage or fading.

I've seen that video before and that case is sweet. If I remember correctly those are archival binders which pretty nice.

I bought a dry erase board, hung it in a hallway that doesn't get sunlight, and use magnetic tape on the backs of my toploaders to stick my favorite cards up there. Very simple but useful way to do it, especially when I want/need to add or move cards around.

If I may, where did you get the display cases at? I would love to get a big one like that for my basement when it gets finished to put my helmets and batting glove in.

Well, I'm a bit embarrassed because I've only been back in the hobby for a bit under a year. So...there is a whole lot of empty real estate on the board at the moment.

Not sure why you are feeling ashamed, I think it's a fantastic idea.
