I think O.J. is probably getting a little old. But who knows he might be a decent backup, maybe pick up a few yards here and there.

So, I'm confused
O.J had a lengthy career. Has been a garbage person since.
Manziel has a drug and alcohol problem
Ryan Leaf was a bust
Josh Gordon has substance abuse issues, and may play again at some point.
So, how does Ray Rice knocking a woman out cold compare with all these guys?

Answer is simple. Game has evolved where the running back position is expendable. So why take the risk on an aging running back who has the skill set that plenty of free agents have without all the baggage?

The pro-Rice crowd, if there is one, would point to Adrian Peterson.

Blocking Joseph Stalin was impossible, he would never yield ground and always did well in the cold.

The truth is Ray Rice was falling off before his career ended. He just wasn't as effective anymore. Look at the tape.

Was about to post the same thing. Pro teams have never been shy to sign rapists and domestic abusers, but Rice was falling off even before the incident.

Leaf also has admitted to doing drugs you forgot that, and knocking out a woman isn't as bad as drugs? I mean doing drugs puts physical harm on yourself and is a terrible thing but hitting someone who can't defend themselves is just as disgusting. I can't believe nobody has responded to your response yet....

Sorry those other people were the first off the top of my head, but who can forget Hernandez :D

Yeah, look at Greg Hardy last season. He shouldn't have been in the NFL (still love that Nantz never shied away from what he felt about Hardy being in the NFL), but since he was coming off of good full seasons he was signed by Dallas.

Would this thread ever been started if he would have hit a female like this in your immediate family? Why even ask a question like this.

You are not going to get a job if texts between you and an NFL owner get it.

I do not support the actions of Ray Rice. But, I think you have to use a little perspective. It was a drunk couple, each very wrong, fighting, and in this case, she was being the aggressor. I don't imagine you would take the same stance if it was some woman who had charged you.
Now, Rice should have been a man and well, manned up. Took a hit or two, and held her down. However, the aggressor, regardless of sex, doesn't really get can't defend themselves credit.
I think what Peterson did was 10 times worst.

We all make mistakes throughout our lives. Some bigger then others. Yes, I do believe in alot of cases like this one, people should get another chance. Again, my opinion.
You don't think there is a ton of this that goes on everyday that never makes it too the public eye and gets covered up? Doesn't make it right, but when people are out drinking & so forth, somethings happen.

Still not a reason to give up on someone.

Well just answer my question if that female would have been YOUR IMMEDIATE FAMILY would you want him to have another chance? Drinking or not?
To answer the thread's original question: he was washed up before the incident happened, the punching was a very convenient way for Baltimore to dump him.

You are right. I'm pretty sure he had the lowest YPC in the league. It was pretty painful to watch after he had been so brilliant. The O-line struggled badly, too.

His hip injury back in 2013 pretty much nailed his career. It was bound to happen though, he had so many touches from 2005-2012. Workhorse backs are rare to begin with, his heavy load at Rutgers at his size definitely contributed to his shorter NFL career.

That is a spot on analysis. Apparently he's been hosting seminars for the Ravens during rookie camps. Seems like he's making an effort to atone.

I love the appeal to emotion fallacy as much as the next guy, but I probably would. If I believed that he was genuine in his remorse, I would have the capacity for forgiveness.

Well when you consider the last season before he got in trouble he had a YPC in the Trent Richardson range I don't see many teams eagerly picking up the phone

Combo of being in decline and being the poster boy for a topic the NFL wants to run screaming from makes for a guy who didn't get another chance.
Honestly, it was the video that killed his career.
Other players have allegedly done far worse, but you don't see it. If there had been video of what happened with Greg Hardy, he would never have played for the Cowboys.
I'm not sure how I feel about "second chances" in the NFL. Playing in the NFL should be a privilege. No one is saying these players can't make a living doing something (they can go work at grocery store and make a living), but not sure that some transgressions, in my book, should allow you to continue to make millions playing a kid's game.

Exactly, he hit the late 20's wall for a RB hard!

I'm sure this has been said as I haven't read the whole thread, but Rice would have had to have some serious ability left in the tank for a team to take on that PR disaster. If I recall correctly Rice seemed to be tapering off with low YPC the prior two years. A couple of teams would have taken the chance if he had upside (see Greg Hardy), but at that point in his career, you could have likely gotten his production out of a 3rd/4th round rookie.

I would have liked to see him get a shot.
That said some others more knowledgeable on his recent performance have given strong evidence that he was in decline.
That said, ponder this, after sitting out a few years, has that helped afford him some amount of recouperation from the wear and tear of the NFL on his smallish frame? Would he be somewhat better if he returned?
Unfortunately, I think the window has closed since there has been zero interest since the incident.
NFL churns through RBs. Always a fresh crop each year. Younger too with less wear. Nature of the beast.
