Found this on Facebook, very nice lady was selling a bunch of old cards. I felt so bad for her, she told me she sold her Mickey mantles for $400 2 days ago.. Including a 1952..
But this was a fun lot to go through, cards are mostly in poor condition but there were a few decent ones here

Cool stuff. That Brooks is likely a fake. Notoriously difficult signer.

Big collection right there. Even in that condition, the Pafko is worth over a hundred bucks. And any high number 1952 is as well. Good find. Hopefully you were more fair with your offer than the person who snaked the Mantle.

We try to believe people know what cards are worth these days, especially with forums. It's a shame she got ripped off so badly.

I tried to be more fair, though honestly I didn't know the values of the cards, not a huge vintage collector other than a 1959 set I completed. But I tried to be fair at a few hundred.
I knew the pafkos were valuable, but I didn't think they were that valuable! I'll have to look through the '52s
Thanks!

I love vintage baseball; I can smell the sweet savor of moth balls and forgotten dreams through my PC.
Nice pickup!

Were there any 59s in the lot? I'm working on the set and don't have any condition requirements.

No, but I have some extra 59's from when I built my set. Send me a list.

This is like a dream lot for me, I'm all about '50s vintage! If you decide to move some of them, definitely PM me!

It's been fun to go through. As for selling, I'm still trying to decide what to do with it all. I may end up trying to complete sets myself.

Let me know if any of the 56 Topps look like they might be NM or better.

I can't feel bad for anyone who is trying to sell something online, who doesn't take the 30 seconds it would take to educate yourself before hand.
Even people who are not connected online can research something like this with a small amount of effort at most.
The Pafko is an interesting case and is one of those cards that I personally believe is misunderstood by many and thus the value (at least off grade copies) continues to be driven by a lack of understanding. The generally accepted reason for the value is that this card was notoriously found damaged often by being the top or first card in the set. It didn't hurt that he was a Brooklyn Dodger either, but the value was driven by condition. The whole point was finding a nice surviving copy was exponentially harder than a common player who would typically reside in the middle of the rubber banded stack. However, even beat up poor shape copies can still sell well. It must be a very strong desire to own one and mint copies selling so high that one has no other choice but to buy a lesser grade, any copy, for the going rate because demand is higher in general. No other reason makes sense otherwise.
Pafko is not worthy of that premium price level unless it is truly a very nice, clean copy. A decent off grade copy can be found for under a $100, but to get a nice grade, prepare to spend a fortune!

I thought that was more like it, but can't complain if it's worth $50 or so.
I Get where you're coming from, but it's practically robbery what he got from her. She wanted to sell to someone who would cherish her fathers collection. This guy argued her down from $500 to $400 for the lot and obviously knew he was scamming her. She has two more large bins full of cards, so I told her I'd come take a look and give her some values so she doesn't get screwed again (and look for myself as well). I'll update the post here after I see it and give you guys a chance on some of it if it goes as planned!
