Hey all, I have a bit of a conundrum on my hands. I am looking to spend about $2-4k in the next couple weeks, but I don't know what to buy. Here is what I have narrowed it down to:
-1933 Goudey Babe Ruth PSA 2 or higher
-2000 Contenders Tom Brady BGS 8.5 or higher
-2001 Contenders Drew Brees BGS 9 or higher
-A set or two I have been eyeing on building (2012 Elite Diecuts Auto/49 set or 1950 Bowman Football set)
-One or two On Card Tom Brady Autos or Patch Autos
-A couple On Card Drew Brees Autos or Patch Autos
-1968 Topps Koosman/Ryan RC PSA 7 or higher
-Babe Ruth Autograph (granted it won't be a top of the line auto)
What do you guys think? Should I do one or two of these? Do you have a suggestion that I should consider? I'm leaning towards the Goudey Ruth since I have always wanted one, but that Brady Contenders is such a nice high dollar card. I'm torn since I want all of these lol.

Personally, I think you're leaning in the right direction. I would want the Goudey or if you could snag a nice bold Ruth sig, I would take that. Good luck with your search! Be sure to show us what ya land.

Id go with a BGS 9 Brady contenders. Price is gonna double if he wins another super bowl.

Babe by a mile! Either one I would grab the card if it was me. Always wanted one too.

Ruth and Ryan hands down. If you have money leftover after that, anything else is a bonus.

Nothing new
the /49 set I wouldn't touch that
anything vintage is good

Ruth or Ryan 100%

To invest vintage. Ryans are on a huge rise right now, so Im not sure if its the right time to buy. It also could be the cheapest you see them. Ruths will always rise and not get cheaper.

Either 1933 Ruth or the Ruth auto

The Goudey Ruth. By a large margin. Pre War graded cards of top players will continue to appreciate, imo. Just a much different collecting environment where many tossed away cards and grading wasn't even a thing.

Out of those, I'd go after a high grade Nolan Ryan RC.

What? No Trevor Simien?
All kidding aside, if you're going to spend that much,
you almost have to pick something that transcends... so Ruth.

I appreciate all the responses guys. I think I may try and grab a '33 goudey Ruth or Ruth Auto. I saw a nice Ruth autograph on eBay that is clean and legible up for auction that I may take a shot at.

Babe Ruth, if you can get the Goudey or auto... go for it. Easy choice here.

Just don't buy this... No COA and PSA/JAS won't authenticate this with this weak auto.
1925 BABE RUTH Signed Baseball W/ New York Yankees Autographs (http://www.ebay.com/itm/1925-BABE-RUTH-Signed-Baseball-W-New-York-Yankees-Autographs-/361725579668?hash=item5438865194:g:H9QAAOSwdIFX1iBM)

Actually, cancel that... I guess they would try for Ruth. Just talked to my buddy who works for PSA.

I would buy the 33 Goudey Ruth or put together the 50 Bowman set (PSA graded). The latter would be fun to do over time if you reserved the funds to go for all of the cards.
A good 1933 Goudey Ruth in centered condition PSA 3 is about what your budget affords. The thing about going 1959 and below is your cards will not go down. They will have a few market fluctuations with spurts up, but it's typically a very slow fluctuation up.
If you go for the Yellow Ruth you could pull off a 2.5 (the rarest).
There are four different stances to choose from and each has pros & cons.
If you go with the Brady rookie you have the volatility. Personally I think it's a good investment as I don't see them dropping, however, the question is will there be the same amount of nostalgia around Brady 80 years after the fact as Ruth?
In my opinion Brady is the best quarterback to play the game, however, I would still go with the Ruth.
You actually have several cards in that range that should continue a nice steady rise including: 1951 Bowman Willie Mays (underappreciated rookie), t206 bat off shoulder Ty Cobb, t206 portrait Cy Young, Namath rookie lower grade, etc.

I can't believe how much some of those older cards are worth i had no idea. I figured the Ruth would be expensive but had no idea on the Nolan Ryan. I thought it would be like $10k for a PSA 9 not 70-80 G's.
Brady's contender cards will be really expensive some day due to the fact he's the GOAT and that's his only signed rookie card. Perfect storm for insane prices. Another 20 years they'll be outrageous.
What about a Gretzky OPC rookie? One just sold for like half a mill. You could probably pick up a PSA 7.5 or BVG 8 for what you're looking to spend.
Brees is an awesome QB and all but i don't see his prices really soaring like the others. I mean if you do want to go that route you can pick up a PSA 10 contenders for 4k. He's a great player.
I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them. Good Luck show us what you get!

The prices are high because of the PSA set registry

Only taking the football stuff you listed into consideration ... i would go withbthe 50 bowman set

Anything but Bree's.... Go for a solid MJ rookie? Basketball market seems to the only one on a real Prolonged rise.
Edit... I do want to say that Brady may be ARs bit of a bubble as IDK what could possibly make them go higher except prolonged scarcity.

The suggestions are fantastic guys. I am really looking hard and trying to figure out what is the best and nicest thing I can buy. Like I stated before, I am leaning towards the '33 Ruth and am considering buying a PSA 1 for a solid price and then grabbing something else. Not sure as to what direction I want to go lol. I won't get the funds for another week or two, but it has been fun looking.

For me it would come down to the Brady Contenders or the Goudey Ruth. It would depend on what was available at the time I was ready to buy. If I could find a decently centered PSA or SGC 3 or 4 #144 then that would be my pick. C'mon it's a BABE RUTH baseball card from his era! Who wouldn't want that.
The argument for the Brady Contenders is that if you don't pick one up now they may be out of most people's (more than now) price range in the near future.
IMO you can't go wrong with either.
