Anyone check it out yet? I liked it...first thing they have put out in a while I actually liked.

What did you guys think?

I pre-ordered from Metallica.com so still have a 3rd disc to check out when it arrives....couldn't resist checking it out early though.

the whole album kinda sounds similar , kinda weird. but i do love it. spit out the bone is probably one of the best songs theyve written since the and justice for all era. ive been hoping for a return to the load/reload era style , got my wish but waaaaaay heavier. i give it a 8/10

Haven't heard the whole thing but really enjoy working out to the two songs that were available early on ITunes. Reminds me of Black.

so how does Lars Ulrich feel about the leak?

He's currently testifying in front of Congress to have the internet shut down.

Probably surprised it leaked this late.

I realize people are still butthurt about that with Napster, but the music industry (namely record companies) is barely making it anymore. Which is why so many artists get the resources to go solo or only have a deal for distribution purposes only anymore. So much music is streamed anymore that artists get less than pennies for each play. They make their money touring.

Bright side? Napster getting their wrists slapped paved the way for services like iTunes and Amazon Song purchases.

It's ok.

I'm more of a Megadeth guy. Their newest album Dystopia was absolutely amazing.

Best thing Metallica ever released was Mustaine.

Megadeth >>>>>>>>>>> Metallica, IMO.

I prefer Mustaine's guitar playing to Hammett's. Aside from a few songs ("Creeping Death", "Four Horsemen", "Motorbreath"), I never got into Metallica.

Aside from the Risk album, and most of Cryptic Writings, I love everything Megadeth has put out.

I liked Metallica a lot up to Justice. From there they just became mediocre. New album is better than their last two (St. Anger lol) but not great. Maybe it needs more listens.

Megadeth has been much more consistent for me over the years. Dystopia blew me away.

I think Adler added a lot to the album

LOVE the hell outa Megadeth Seen them about 10 times No way they are better than Metallica Maybe the latter Metallica but Kill em all Ride the lighting and Master of Puppets blows anything Megadeth did. I personally think Slayer blew them all away in that era

Although Megadeth has had some great stuff over the past 20 or so years, Dystopia is their best album since Rust in Peace.

I agree with this, but up till Justice. But overall career wise, I prefer Megadeth for consistency. Both are great, but Megadeth remained solid after Metallica declined. I honestly can't even listen to St. Anger without cringing or laughing out loud.

Slayer never really reached me. I like some songs though.

yeah , exactly. I no longer get excited about a new metallica release . this album still has that "new" metallica sound . people say they just cant duplicate the older style ........... I say why not .......... I just don't think they are hungry anymore .

Hard to keep that hunger going when you've got probably the best part of $250,000,000 in the bank.

Only have heard a few songs so far but not too crazy about it yet. Probably cause Ride The Lightning has lived in the CD player of my truck for a solid 3 months. Wherever I go, the album has been playing repeat, still not tired of it. Love that old sound, it tells stories and paints a picture in my mind......

Like from 3:10 to about 4:00.

I know most fans always revert to the golden years of their favorite bands, but the newer Metallica feels like its metal just for the sake of being metal. I know they are very critical of their work, but sadly it's just not the same. The older albums had this mystique, kind of like what Led Zeppelin achieved.

Is this the same "new" album thats been playing on Liquid Metal for the last 2 months? I'm glad they keep playing but I havent bought anything Metallica since the Black self titled album. And I change the channel within seconds of Liquid Metal playing anything from after that time. James trying to "sing" just kills me. Sounds are all the same, meaning you can tell its Metallica the second the music starts, and James just blows any more.

Give me Slayer any day!

I think Hunger has everything to do with it. In the early 90s the Big 4 released The Black album, Countdown To extinction, Sound of White Noise, and Seasons into the Abyss...

all 4 of those albums were each bands most commercial success. Each band made a butt ton of money. Metallica made the most and shifted 1st with the Load album which was a sellout but complete garbage compared to earlier works, Megadeth had a decent follow up with Youthanasia but began to get soft with Cryptic Writtings, Anthrax ditched their lead guitarist but still put out a somewhat solid effort with Stomp and Slayer puts out a decent Divine intervention but a weak punk cover album aswell....

This all leads to 1998-99

Metallica puts out Reload - udder garbage
Megadeth puts out Risk- complete #@#@#@#@
Anthrax put out Volume 8 the threat is real - WTF?
Slayer puts out Diabolus in Musica - I still seriously want my 15 bucks back

The bands that couldn't miss all whiffed at the same time. Thus the fall of headbangers ball, metal with solos in the mainstream, an influx of autotune crap.

The good thing about this is the internet era arrived and you could listen to a much broader spectrum of music aside from the little MTV, CD clubs, and cd stores had to offer. You realize that those 4 bands although legends are just a small fraction of amazing music out there... its time to ditch the big 4 and move on.

Why does this album get so much hate?? This is one of my top 4 easily. Reign in Blood, God Hates Us All, Seasons in the Abyss, and Diabolus! At any point I could swap 3 and 4 so its really a tie.

Can't speak for everyone but for me personally it has no songs that stand out just 3 chord easy to play muddy riffs. Nothing technical at all, Toms vox are just screaming there is no "singing" which is a far cry from Seasons and before.

This was Kerry's least fave album and he lumps it in with the Limp/Korn era of music..nuff said.

The sad thing is in retrospect it isn't that bad (there as been s slew of much worse come out since) but you have to think in a time of when it came out and their works prior and it's not even close nor did it have anything unique to have legs to stand on.

I really like

Hardwired
Moth into flame
Halo on fire
Atlas Rise
Spit out the bone
Lords of summer
Manunkind

I bought the deluxe version at Best Buy which is 3 disc with a good amount of live content. To me it was worth it. As far as Metallica as a whole, I've always been a hard rock guy with just a little bit of metal so I never disliked 90's Metallica like most people. I never thought they "sold out" or anything. It's only natural for humans to want to mature, or want to try something different than what they're used to. Plus, sometimes no matter how hard you try it's impossible to recreate the past. I will say this, if you can't see that some of the great things about 80s Metallica still exist today, than I really don't know what to tell you.
