Wow. Great pickup for Atlanta.
Atlanta Braves @Braves
The #Braves have acquired Alex Jackson from the Mariners, along with a player to be named later, in exchange for Rob Whalen & Max Povse

The only good thing to come out of this is I'll put my Taijuan PC up for grabs....any news on the two guys in return? Saw they were AAA talent but not much else.

Mariners won this one IMO. Whalen an awesome pitching prospect, only 22.

John Manuel @johnmanuelba
Max Povse was slated to rank No. 20 on BA top 30 for very deep #Braves system. Mariners Top 10 comes Wednesday; I'd expect him in it

I'm still not sold on Jackson, saw him play several times and nothing that impressed me.

#20 on Braves to Top 10 on Mariners. Are the Braves that deep? Or is the Mariners minors just that bad?

Well, this is interesting.
Mark Bowman @mlbbowman
Jackson has been exclusively used as an OF during his pro career, but there's a chance he could be used as a catcher.

I'd say both.

On a scale from 1-10, how bad have the Mariners been in developing top prospects? 12?

I say this trade does little for either team in the big picture. I personally do not see any of these pieces being valuable in the bigs to either team.

Unfortunately, another immature kid that has the talent, but is not 110% focused on baseball. Good trade for the Mariners.

Povse has a chance real tall guy 6'8-6'9 took him a long time to put it together.... He pitched against us in high school.... 94-95 decent BB if he throws strikes he's a legit 3-4 guy

First guy who Braves will send to talk to him is Dale Murphy who struggled his first three years in the minors and then again at the MLB level for three years to start out his career.

If we trade O'Neil, Neidert or Gohara... I'll question Jerry

Name recognition means nothing; Jackson has looked like a complete bust so far. Might as well capitalize off of his relatively recent lofty draft status while you still can. For Atlanta, maybe this will be a wake up call for him, if his talent isn't the issue.

This is..odd. Usually goes the other way around. In fact I don't recall a prospect being moved to catcher. I guess it's probably happened though. I assume he played catcher as an amateur?

Yes, that was his primary position in HS

Only recent one I can think of is Tony Wolters.

Hmm. Maybe they feel he will be more comfortable being behind the plate again. Though that should have no bearing on how he hits. Would be great though if he worked out as a long term option at catcher.

Carson Kelly has had a pretty successful transition from 3B to C.
Buster Posey was a SS early in his collegiate career and moved to catcher before his junior year

I was first pretty -meh- with this trade for the Braves but I'm coming around on it. I don't think Whalen or Povse were really in the long term plans and they decided to cash in - especially with Povse who had a stellar year.
Maybe they will try to flip Jackson in another trade for a big-time SP?

Sorry to say, but no way Jackson's value can get a "big time SP". If he was worth that much, the Mariners would of traded him for a solid starter because that is what they need.
The Braves would have to throw in someone really good.

The Cubs moved Contreras to catcher after 3 seasons in the minors at 3rd. Seems to have worked out.

Pretty sure you mean the 2014 Draft. If I'm not mistaken, it was part of a repack product that I dare not speak the name of. As to whether or not someone found it in one of those Pelican cases, I don't know.

Oh, I agree. My idea is that he would probably be a third or fourth piece in a trade for a TOR arm. Albies, Allard/Fried/Newk, Jackson, and Acuna could probably do some damage. He wouldn't be the headliner in the trade, but could perhaps sweeten the pot more than Povse and/or Whalen could.
