Does anyone attempt to collect all the parallel cards of a player.
I would like to but it is becoming overwhelming.

No, not me. J/k. Yes, me.

Yes, definitely. It usually starts when I get 3+ cards of a parallel #'d to 25 or less. Then I start looking on ebay for more and see that I can grab 4 or 5 #'d to 50 for a reasonable price from several different sellers. That leads to a search on COMC and from there its becomes a daily obsession looking for any and all of those parallels. Thankfully I don't collect any huge names so it makes it a little easier and not as expensive.
How many of a certain parallel series do you have and out of how many? In one of my collections I have approximately 80 out of the 459 parallels total in this series and I've been working on it for 4 years. Occasionally one or two of the cards will pop up on ebay at a reasonable price and I'll add it to my collection. Since the initial surge of buying back in 2012-2013, I probably only add one a month now. My realistic goal is collecting 50% of the entire print run but at this pace its looking like a project I'll have to pass down to my grandkids.... in 40+ years.

Yes. I would post, but I wouldn't want pics to take up the whole first page.
I have almost every Daniel Robertson card from /5 and up, with the exception of I think 3 sets. Definitely have all cards /25 and up. My most impressive IMO is his 1st 2014 Bowman card (paper and chrome) - all 1/1s (Superfractor, white ice, red paper) plus a printing plate.

I collect all Cleveland Indians Refractors and X-Fractors. I don't consider Superfractors or Plates. I'll never have them all but I enjoy the search and finding good deals.
So far I have more then 2,300 different Indians refractors.

I've done a bunch of complete rainbows, but only if I pull the 1/1 first. Always a nightmare to track those down last.

Yes and it's a headache. I've been working on the keyvius Sampson topps chrome auto and base rainbow and it's been hard and surprisingly expensive.

To clarify I am not even talking about super expensive cards.
I am looking for all the 2013 Topps Bumgarner parallels including the Walmart edition and update sets. There are even parallels in the Update sets. Then there is 2014, 2015,2016.
There there is Stadium Club and Finest for all these years which appeal to me.
A seemingly endless # of cards where the cost adds up.

I think I have a 2013 Update Bumgarner All-Star in the Pink edition I need to move.
I collect parallels but not by player. They've been de-emphasized some lately by Topps but eventually they will return to using a defined border, rather than full bleed, in the main set.

If it's for a Yankee that I obsess about and turn into a must have PC guy, I must have the parallels. I don't try and get all parallels for all current Yankees that year though; at least not at issue. If I can pick them up cheap years down the road in bargain boxes, I'll take them.

I think I am officially giving up on collecting all the parallels for Bumgarner and Turner cards.
Most of them don't even appeal to me anyway.
On a tangent can someone clarify what the Topps Opening Day cards are? Were all Opening Day cards exclusively sold in Toys R US or where only the purple ones sold there?

Only the Purple Opening Day cards were specific to Toys R Us. The base and blue parallels can be bought anywhere.

Yes, lots of people try to collect all cards of a player, including the full range of parallels for each product. I have collected Grady Sizemore since 2001, and have very nearly all his cards (including a fair number of 1/1s), with a couple exceptions. Filling out rainbows from various sets is one of the most rewarding parts of collecting modern cards for me.
Topps Opening Day is a product geared towards new collectors and/or kids, mainly. They are close in design to the base Topps brand each year, with the OD logo, but a completely separate set. It has a smaller checklist, and a lot fewer inserts. Basically, having very few autographs, jersey cards, rare parallels, etc., makes it cheaper to produce, and being able to sell a pack for 99 cents or $1.49 or whatever they cost is an important entry point for new collectors.

I did it with 1989 Fleer Bill Ripken and Russ Martin 2005 BDP. It was fun but costly and very time consuming. Considering how many other things I have going on I hope I don't start another. But I will...
