View Full Version : COMC submission return due to "condition"

I'm sure this has been discussed at some point, but I just want to vent a bit. Let me start off by saying that I like COMC a lot, and use it to unclutter my desk. If I make $500 a year on stuff that would collect dust I'm happy. I send in 100 cards every 4-6 weeks, and I always get 10-15 back saying that there are condition issues. Now I don't work for BGS or PSA, but I do send stuff in to be graded and check it very thoroughy. My recent shipment from COMC returned 45 cards from my last 3 submissions (45 out of 300 cards). There may be 5-8 that I can see them turning down......but most have NOTHING that should get them returned. This bothered me earlier this year to the point that 3 cards that were returned from previous submissions I sent to BGS......2 came back 9.5, and the other was a 9.......so my question is.......are they just lazy? Or are they worried about getting some of the submissions done in time so they pick cards to disqualify right away? I really do not understand who decides and how they decide what has condition issues. I'll resubmit some of these and they will get through, happens all the time.......just seems a bit questionable to me.

Could they be unsupported cards?
COMC will return cards with barely noticeable flaws.
You could always resubmit them and see if they get returned again.

It's been a point of frustration for a while now. They told me that they use the PSA guideline for Near Mint to determine if cards are accepted. Most I get back seem to pass the test and they do so when I resubmit.
Sometimes I miss a scratch or surface blemish...some come back with touched corners (despite being mailed in penny sleeves and being just fine when I mailed them).

Yup. This is a growing frustration to me as well. I had 59 cards returned from my last submission of over 700. A thorough scan by myself found issues with maybe a half-dozen. All were standard Topps or Panini recent issues. I'll try to add them back into my next submission and see what happens.
The previous high I had for returns was about a dozen. However, those all had noticeable corner dings (though some very minor) that happened somewhere along the process after it left my hand.

I seem to be averaging about a 10% reject rate, no matter how particular I am with my pre-scanning process. Of those, I've resubmitted the ones that I didn't see anything wrong with and they made it through the second time.

I have less of a problem with these than I do with the ones I sent in fine and that were returned to me with actual damage. Don't get me wrong, I have a problem with both issues but the fact that they actually damage cards and accept no fault or blame is the far bigger issue.

I had quite a few cards returned to me also. What ticked me off is I don't remember the damage being like what I saw. You would think I would notice major corner dings. I put all cards in penny sleeves, yet when they were sent back none were. That can result in more damage.

It's almost a double edged sword; you can take all these precautions to ensure your cards are safe but the more steps you take (double boxing, padding, penny sleeves) are more steps the COMC staff have to disassemble to get access to your cards and more times your cards get handled, the greater the possibility of damage at their hands. What can you do?
As for them taking responsibility...yea, don't hold your breath waiting on that. But, you already knew that.

Just re-send them back in. Past two years I've had 82 cards returned back to me with condition issues. I've just re-submitted the same cards and 68 of them were accepted with no issues or condition notes the second time around

I just had 61 with "condition" issue out of 300. Just got the email. A lot were my pink chrome refractors that I thought were in great condition...

I also had some resubmitted this time and they made the cut. Maybe it is a way of charging us extra...

How is it charging us extra if they don't charge us? Have them mailed back to you and resubmit in your next box.

They used to charge for each damaged card, do they not still? Their 'logic' was that they were still being handled plus they had to be "submitted" for documentation purposes.
Again, whether they are or not isn't the big problem. The big problem is the cards they do actually damage that weren't sent in damaged. Damaged to the point that resubmitting is not an option. It has been happening in every single batch I send and it never used to be the case.

They currently don't charge for the group of damaged cards, they take a big picture of them and upload them into your account. You can either choose to upgrade to Select processing at 50 cents a card, or put the whole group in your next package (maybe they charge a quarter?).

They did use to charge, it was part of processing.
