Posted the first part in my Saberhagen thread the other day...

Found a kind of interesting card. Picked up a lot of Saberhagen cards and found a variation in the 1990 Bowman Sweepstakes card. Or at least not one I was aware of. First two scans show the well known printing plate variations, where Topps used asterisks (back of card), rather then the common A, B, and like lettering.

The bottom two show a crop variation, most noticeably on bottom, with the artist signature. Both of these cards are printing plate **. Not sure if the variation is known, but its new to me.

So I thought, I bet other cards have crop variations also. And by looking over cards in COMC, I think I found a few others.

Don Mattingly card. Here it is easiest to see on the top of Mattingly's cap. One has a lot more space to the top border then the other. Both cards are plate **.

Small space on top

And the Mark Davis. This one is easiest to see with the artist signature again. One is almost touching the border along the bottom right corner, the other has more space. Both cards are plate *.

And the Bo Jackson. The Bo is easiest to tell in the bottom right corner where the cursive "s" on Bo's jersey. One has a lot of space (white), the other has little space. These are both plate *.

Looks like the artwork was cropped for the cards more then once. I would guess other cards have a crop variation also, and if you pc a player in a 1989 set, I would examine them for like crop variations as well.

This is a known variation. 25 years ago, it did not have any significant value...because, honestly, 1990 Bowman was literally more common than toilet paper. Seriously; you could go into a grocery store and there would be more boxes of '90 Bowman than rolls of toilet paper.

:)

Does the variation have any value at this time? Here's a post from 2011 after a quick search, I'm sure there are many more. https://junkwaxgems.wordpress.com/2011/01/30/1990-bowman-master-set-checklist/

Yeah, I saw that webpage. It does not note crop variations...just the asterisk ones.

Always thought these cards were cool. Would be neat if these variations caught on and gained some value

I honestly don't think I would have noticed pulling those from packs.

Only way they would gain any value is if it could be shown that one variation is significantly scarcer than the other. Even then I wouldn't expect a huge inflation in value, after all there aren't that many people who would care enough to pay a premium, and the variation is rather difficult to tell without having a non-variation to reference.
