Unique/obscure players you have seen "super collected"?

Im about to start a collection of a player and i was wondering what players you have seen collected that are unique where there just isnt that much out there of them?

What kind of items you have heard of in these collections aside from cards? I asked this in football and i wanted to get the basketball point of view.

Once bought a collection of various super stars and rc's from vintage to early 90s and he was a rc hoarder with anywhere between 25-100 of some rookies like Steve Young/Dan Marino/etc. The weirdest thing was he had a 100+ count hoard of 1989 Pro Set Commemorative Collectible #1 Pete Rozelle NFL Commissioner. Why, I don't know! LOL

I think often it's players from foreign countries who are the first from their country to make an impact. I'm not sure if all these players are "supercollected", but they are often more popular than their talent level warrants.

In baseball, the best examples are Gallaraga and Vizquel, but Ichiro's values are much higher than logic says they should be as well, given that his comps should be players like Boggs, Gwynn, and Carew.

Arturs Irbe was a cult figure in hockey for a while, and I think Anze Kopitar hits that button as well.

In basketball, the earliest examples I can think of are guys like Sarunas Marciulionis and Manute Bol, both of whom were cult figures during the Warriors Run TMC years.

He has a huge following in Hungary, as he is the only Hungarian ever to play in the NBA. I know some super collectors, but the most insane keep quiet. One has every card in his collection signed by Kornel David in person.
Just recently some idiot sold Kornel's game worn and signed warm ups on eBay with US shipping only for $41. LOL. You could easily get 1-2k for that over here. There is already a buzz about it over here as people are trying to chase it down.

I feel like supercollecting is a dying art as it is - you'd almost have to pick an obscure player just to have a shot (or you have to have deep pockets and choose a player with little competition). I tried supercollecting a player pre-Panini and I can only imagine how difficult it'd be now.

I am trying to supercollect Tim Duncan. Competition for his stuff was not that competitive years ago. Right now it seems that many have jumped ship and are now noticing his "must-haves." Even his common GUs end high versus then. I was just lucky of picking up his stuff cards early.

I can't imagine super-collecting a KAT, with rookie must haves in Noir, Flawless, Immaculate and NT. I do not have a Rubies TD Rookie or a PMG Red, but these are parallels unlike with Panini, wherein True RPAs would cost a fortune.
