Hello all.
I am a new collector of baseball, and I am not afraid of asking stupid questions. Anyway I just decided to join Baseball Card Collecting and follow the sport of baseball. Anyway to my question.
I understand that I will not learn the sport of baseball quickly (still learning the teams:D). However I wish to have an adequate knowledge by Opening Day (in 75 days). I understand the Red Sox (New England) but what should I learn about baseball?
Any help is appreciated
P.S. When I first started paying attention to sports Evan Longoria and Justin Verlander were big. I still regard them as the Top Ever (I know I am wrong)
How many teams - 30
Divisions - 6 Leagues - 2
Amount of Games - 162
What positions there are?
There is so much when you think about it. Go on wikipedia then Youtube it

There is a series of episodes called "Baseball" by Ken Burns. I know it used to be on Netflix, not sure if it still is. But it goes through all eras and history of the players and the game.

I love all of this. :)!
Best way to learn it is by watching. MLB network replays old games sometimes. Watch those and it'll help.

How about the ball hitting a runner or an umpire? Or if a fielder throws their glove at the ball?

Glad to see that you're both not afraid of asking questions that may seem odd to others, but also willing to learn.
Me, I learned a lot through playing video games. MLB 06 the show had been out for a while (Spring 2007 I think I got it) and so it helped learn a lot. Especially about how to run the bases after a fly ball

That's how I learned football-Madden.
Card Collecting also helps in learning a sport.

Play RBI Baseball I on the NES. Probably the most basic version of baseball you can find. FYI every pitcher in the MLB doesn't throw a nasty knuckleball.

At first I thought you were joking, but after thinking about it, I realize that I learned more about the rules of hockey from playing NHLPA '93 on Sega Genesis than from any other source.

Where does a balk fit in? An error right?

It doesn't. A batter can't reach 1st base on a balk. Only advance a base if already on one.

Also, just as with any other topic, you won't learn everything in 75 days. Youll also learn a few things even after having some familiarity of the game
Example: this past season I learned that the positing of the "K" signs meant something.
you'll find that somewhere in the Topps Now thread.
one means swinging strikeout, the other is caught looking. Still dont know which is which

As I read this, I immediately thought of the clinking-steel sound effect that goes along with the title.
