View Full Version : Do serial numbers still make a difference in value?

I remember back in the day when serial numbered cards first came out, collectors used to value cards with a certain numbering more than others. For example, cards numbered 001/xxx or players jersey number/xxx or players significant milestone/xxx would sell more than other random numbers.
Other than the players jersey number, do any other numbers command a premium? (I'm referring to the individual serial card number, not the total print run number)

I think its more about jersey number... maybe a little if its the first card in the print run

Yea 1/xx and jersey #/xx both command premiums. 99/99 types get a small one as well.
How big a premium varies widely. Jersey # seems to matter far less on lower numbered parallels than on the base cards.

The 1/XX brings a big premium mixed with the jersey number bringing a bigger premium. 99/99 brings no premium. If player is a new number it brings no premium to old number card.

I think people will pay a bit more for the jersey number since it's hard to pull those and when breaking I usually feel cards are a bit special if they're the first or the "last" of the bunch, but I don't think it affects much as far as price goes compared to the jersey number matching.

I am ok paying a premium for jersey #'d if it is from a release I really like. It has worked out for me pretty nicely though. In baseball I found a Mike Trout jersey numbered 27/2015 Topps Gold a couple of years ago that was super cheap(at least I thought it was) because there are so many. To me though...the odds of finding that card were worse than maybe finding a 27/50 of a Topps Chrome parallel, which would have been at a MUCH higher price than I paid. Make sense?

99/99 brings no premium.
Gonna disagree a bit here. I seem to always get a premium for 10/10, 25/25, 99/99. It's not a huge amount but it is more.

I know that 90's cards definitely get a premium. I typically don't care about the Grant Hill cards that are the last one in the print run like 50/50 but I would pay more for 33/50 and 01/50 all day.

I don't give a darn about first and last numbered, but I do pay a premium for jersey numbered cards. However, it's not much of a premium. My general rule of thumb is that if a card is in that $2-10 range, I'll pay $25 for the jersey numbered version. But if we're talking about a $200 card, I'll only pay like $240 for the jersey numbered version.

I love jersey numbered as a collector and have seen multiplier as high as 3x on a $250 card when the jersey s/n appears. 1/xx is ok, but not a must. As a collector, reverse jersey number or their college number actually make my list above 1.

I hope the jersey # still matters, I just cracked 250 of them. :flex:

This made me chuckle.
I'd definitely pay a premium for jersey-numbered cards, but I've never understood paying extra for first/last.
