I have always had the idea to start a collection strictly based from any cards... EXCLUDING Jerseys/ Patches/ & Autos... I think that there are tons of rare & overlooked inserts/ parallels out there that look much better than some auto cards. Would you guys ever attempt to build a collection only buying rare & sought after base/ inserts/ rc/ numbered cards? Why or Why Not? Just curious to hear what your opinions might be!

Isn't this 90s collecting in a nutshell?

I pretty much do. All the other stuff is too expensive.

I do love autos though, but these days I usually look for one of each player also. Its like I'd rather have a Kobe, KD, Garnett and Dirk instead of 4 Kobe's.

Plus it's fun collecting all types of inserts of your players/teams.

I try and get 1 auto, a key RC and maybe some cool looking inserts of most all star type players that I dont collect, but acknowledge their game.

Here's some of my random mess of cheap and cool looking stuff of guys I like

I have 2 autos and 4 game used cards in my entire collection(and I hope to get rid of one of the autos soon). All of the rest are inserts base and parallels. And it has nothing to do with the cost and everything to do with how they look. I hate seeing what I call "added extra ink" on cards. I do not understand the appeal and obsession with them. If I see a player I collect sign something in my presence I then have a personal connection to that item and a memory. Pulling a card with a barely legible signature does nothing for me.

Basically the first thing that popped into my head

Thought so. You could collect current stuff without touching relics and sigs, but it would be strict and you would have nothing to touch from the big 3 products. I've always been open to everything issued in pack/box/case form and regularly distributed. Sigs and relics are fine and I enjoy parallels/inserts equally.

Yea, that's why I think old(er) school is the way to go. Stuff is way too few and far between now since everything revolves around the memorabilia concept.

I will say though, I checked out the preview pics of the new Revolution, and some of those designs are really awesome. First time I've wanted to try a Panini product/box.

I do. I only collect base cards, parallels and inserts. The ONLY autos I am interested in are buybacks, which are basically signed base or insert cards. And I only have a fistful of MEM/JSY cards also, like the first JSY and first game floor cards issued of my 2 PC players, Kobe and Shaq, as well as a shoe card of each. I dont know if they are the first shoe cards tough, but I dont think they made shoe cards of them prior 99-00. I need to check.

Edit: Oh, and why? I only collect cards from 1996-04 and only from sets that feature both Kobe and Shaq. They look neat together. There was no auto set that features both, and not a lot of relic sets either. I also think that including relics/auto can actually take away from the card's design if it is not done properly. I also try to represent everything in my collection, including technologies. I have wooden, acetate, metal, refractor, holographic, etched, whatever. I want to put more thought into my collection than money, since I have plenty of one, and not much of the other.

I have plenty of autos and mem but my collection leans this way. Definitely not hard at all to do for 90s stuff. Panini era there's still plenty of sets to collect: Court Kings always has great insert sets, Rev Galactics, Prizm parallels, Select tie die, Hoops Kobe all-Rookie, 15-16 silver Prizm inserts (Emergent, Fireworks, Point Men), Select team USA... plenty of options.
