Hey, guys.
Just wanted to let everyone know that I am opening a small sports card shop, Wax Poetic, in downtown Indianapolis, in the Fountain Square neighborhood.
We are located on the third floor of the Murphy Arts Center.
We are going to specializing in basketball -- 90s wax by the pack, smaller group breaks, and a mix of newer product -- but we will not be limited to hoops alone. And we are always glad to fill any order requests on product.
Check us out on Instagram (@waxpoeticfs) for updates, but the shop is slated to open in two Saturdays, on February 18th.
Reach out to me with any questions or comments.
Look forward to being downtown's first sports card shop in quite some time.
Wish you guys were closer to me :( best of luck with your shop! Ill be sure to stop by if im ever in the area

I love the idea of grabbing a drink downstairs and La Margarita and coming up to open up a few packs. I haven't been to a brick & mortar card shop in years, so this sounds absolutely awesome.

Good luck. I think that your single largest issues is going to be finding consistent unseached product.
Products that are going to be worth opening are going to be rare and hard to find. If you have a large stock of product then maybe you are ahead of the game.

Opening this week! Please come down and see us. Have plenty of live 90s unopened wax ready to go, and gonna start taking pre-sales for upcoming Panini. Long live independent sports card shops!

My advice...carry other sports too. Hard to run a card shop nowadays...can't imagine its any easier just selling 1 sport.

The more of you there are the better. Best of luck. I worry though that your market is people of my age range (35-40). Back when we were kids, Basketball cards were IT! We spent everything we had on packs. Cars and lawns in the neighborhoods were immaculate. But a lot of my friends who were huge collectors with me as kids no longer care about cards. Maybe 1 out of 30 are interested. In business, you have to remember NOT to think everyone is like you and enjoys these types of cards. 80's and 90's basketball cards will fizzle fast. IF you're going to do JUST basketball, bring in some new stuff as well...
Also, let me know how business has been the first few days.

Here are a few pictures for those asking! Sorry for the mess. Been getting singles and such organized.
Got a bunch of stuff on the way, Panini and 90s.
For those offering advice, I appreciate all the feedback -- gonna stay low key for now, but if you are local, just get at me via messenger or through our Facebook page, and I will make sure to stock what you're after.
Fortunately, the shop is a very small, intimate venue, and it is only a side project. Temporary, at least, until we move to a permanent location a few miles away... stay tuned for that! Lol.
As for now, it's on the third floor of the Murphy Arts Center, an awesome mixed used space in the downtown Indianapolis neighborhood of Fountain Square.
I actually own a restaurant on the first floor, La Margarita, and have a Pinball Vault, PinVault (Yes, an actual vault full of pinball machines!) that I co-own with some friends on the second floor.
Funky, for sure. But I'm a huge hoop head.
Anyway, I digress. Here are some photos! Still got a bit of cleaning and picture hanging to do, but it's been so nice in Indy I wanted to open our doors for those that have been itching to rip some wax!

Up for that great little shop :)!
I visited Indy for the very first time last week, and Jon made from that short trip a memorable moment. (seriously, hospitality of Jon, as well as Andy in Indy Card Exchange, was TOP NOTCH)
Neighborhood is great (well, I like breweries, records & design, so Fountain Square is the place to be in Indy), and it is so much fun to break old products (was not lucky with Topps Chrome 99-00 and Brilliants 98-99, but such a blast to open those boxes).

Yep that was great :)!
I'm kind of a shy and quiet person, but people here were all very welcome :)
From the Guest relations officer of the Pacers who organized me a 'backstage tour' at the Bankers Life Fieldhouse, to the family who gave me recommendations on The Eagle menu...most people in Indiana seem nice, love basketball and SOUR beers, a dream state to me :D

The Eagle is amazing. Indiana for the most part is very welcoming. We've got our issues but overall it's a damn good place to live. Lots of former Pacers end up staying in Indiana after their playing days are over. Rik Smits, Derrick McKey, Fred Jones, Darnell Hillman, all live in Indiana now that they're retired. I'm sure there are others that I'm forgetting.

Remember when I said that people in Indiana were very kind?
Matt (MGoBlue) wrote me two weeks ago to congratulate me on my PG-13 collection (sadly Paul will never come back to the Pacers :( ), and told me he had a couple hundred Big Dog rookies, inserts, and parallels from 94-95.
He wanted to help my collection out to grow by sending me over those cards for free - the only thing I had to do was to pay for the shipping fees.
I started back a Big Dog collection last year, as I came across a former collector who had amazing pieces for sale (1/1 from the 90's, Starting Five...) and my first ever Champion jersey was a purple Bucks.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4288/35289771926_455ecb8b80_c.jpg
Not only Matt sent me a huge package with the Glenn Robinson cards, but he added also some nice Reggie Miller and MJ as freebies..and paid for the package delivery to France
Don't get me wrong, I like high-end cards and very rare stuff, but there is nothing like looking at the back of all these 'smaller' cards and find out how great 'common' cards were back in the day.
I absolutely love collecting, and I've met great collectors in the 7 years I've been back in the hobby (I started back in 2010 when Paul George was drafted by the Pacers), but it is such a nice gesture by Matt that I'm still speechless about it.
Thank you again Matt, and have a great day!
