The off-season Prizm hype presented a prime opportunity for people to buy up Durant cards at low prices. My only regret is not getting more.

I even traded a Mudiay Prizm Gold/10 for a Durant Chrome Refractor 9.5

The card is described as immaculate indicating good for grading. Hence the reason for the high price. A 90/10 O/C card sold yesterday for $41. Condition matters. Interestingly, the buyers of that $170 raw card apparently don't know how to tell if the card is O/C top bottom because that one is. PSA 9 at best.


I'm kicking myself for not hitting the BIN on a BGS 9.5 refractor for $600 2-3 weeks ago. Ugh...

No way prices come down until the Playoffs. People are buying now because they see how great KD fits in the GS system. Moreover some say he is the best player on that Team and may will win Finals MVP. So they think prices will be even higher.
It will be interesting to watch.

As of right now, no other KD RCs are going up except these Cards.

Someone literally bought every Topps Chrome Orange Refractor BIN (http://bit.ly/2kjTw1Z) listed yesterday. That wooping he handed the Thunder/Westbrook might have been the nudge his stuff needed.

I suppose he could have a Curry type frenzy if/when Warriors go on their playoff run. There are worse players to gamble on.

I have a large Durant PC and got my 9.5 for $156 a while back. Should have gotten the psa 10 and the BGS 10 for ~$200 each instead. Yep, 200.

Got the base 9.5 for $66.

Whites were going for 265, and I never got an orange sigh....

These prices do not make sense at all..$400 for a PSA 10 base? Lebron didn't reach those prices until he won the championship last year...Lebron raw were $120 - $150 last year. I think one person is hitting the BIN on everything and it is having a huge affect on the market. Once he's stops buying these prices will come down.

Right after he went to GS, 9.5 base was going for $100-125, and I sold a bgs 9 refractor for $275. This seems a bit crazy.

Would winning a ring with GS set his prices in Lebron range, or will his stuff drop like Curry's by about July?

Yea, I agree. I think a lot of these prices are with the assumption of them making it pretty deep in playoffs built in. This is pretty crazy for a 1 color Exquisite.

Regarding these refractors, anybody venture to guess how much of a multiplier would a bgs 10 with 10 centering and corners have over a BGS 9.5 with quad 9.5 subs or higher? There are 311 bgs 9.5's compared to only 21 bgs 10's current (with zero black labels, and 14 with 10 centering and corners).

Is 3x fair, or is that too low? I know that for some players such as Kobe the BGS 10 will sell for like 5x more than the 9.5.

I have seen this for the pat year now. Chrome & Prizm cards just keep climbing!! its not gonna stop either. the collectors are speaking and thats what they want. i prefer chrome/prizm rookies over autos as well. i love them. this card is not coming down anytime soon. most likely never now. 1st it was lebron chromes, then curry/harden all though those are more sp, then westbrook, now durant, and we are seeing Giannis and Isaiah thomas will be next. Giannis prizms are already hitting $35 for raw and a prizm silver refractor of giannis raw just brought $460 yesterday! only a matter of time.

I need some opinions...I do not do much grading. In fact, the only submission I have ever done was through SGC when they were at a show in this area about 2 years ago. I submitted a Durant chrome refractor (as well as a Finest refractor) that came back gem 98. PSA is coming down here to Palmetto, FL next weekend (for those in the area who want to come with things to submit).

First, how much does the fact that it is in a SGC holder drop the relative value vs. PSA or BGS? If it is significant, do I attempt to do a crossover to get a PSA 10 and how much does that cost? I am rather ignorant when it comes to crossovers. Do I say only crack only if it is a 10? How does that work?

I am doing a submission through them regardless. I have a base chrome that I reasonably certain will come back a 10 and some other things already lined up.

IMO, crack it out of that SGC holder and shoot for a PSA 10. SGC is not the "in thing" in modern cards, PSA is. Heck if it even comes back a PSA 9, it's still a more desirable card to many than is a SGC 98.

SGC does a good job and is on par with PSA as far as grading goes, it's just that PSA appeals to many more in the card business--especially those spending big money. Good luck!

i think they have. id rather have a nice refractor or colored refractor over a auto rc. there just to plentiful from too many products. chrome is king. only 1 of those.

Exquisite might be the most iconic but hardly the most desirable among the common collector. I can afford a Topps Chrome RC of LeBron or Durant. Their also easier to move if needed. At different grades most people can afford a Fleer Jordan RC as well.

but realistically, i think people are waking up to the fact that for investment purposes the Topps chrome is the way to go as the brand has had a better track record than most. Yes other cards are way rarer, but most buyers don't care about that. They are attracted to the fact that Kobe and Lebron also have Topps Chrome RC's and how much those sell for. It's perceived as being a safer bet than brands such as Exquisite which has been tarnished in recent years. There are other factors which also act to promote Chrome as being considered the iconic card such as the realization that for the most part, patches and auto's are a gimmick and no longer coveted as before. Another factor is the advent of Panini. People think Prizm is the modern chrome, but if anything it just makes people appreciate the original more. The longer Panini is around and flooding the market with junk the more appealing brands like Chrome become. Factor this with the fact that now KD is in a major market and positioned to do some big things (by big, i mean historic) with the Warriors, it's not hard to figure out why the prices of the chrome are going up still. Not only is there's just way more demand from people for the chrome, but the price they are able to pay is much higher than in the past. It seems like the hobby is coming full circle. Vintage has gotten very popular again and there isn't a autograph, patch, or any gimmick to it. I think long term collectors have more confidence in just a regular ol run of the mill cardboard rookie. You don't have to worry about fake patches, fading autographs, or which RPA to choose from. I'm not saying RPA's are going to lose their following/value ,but I think when it comes to the masses simple is better.

Regarding these refractors, anybody venture to guess how much of a multiplier would a bgs 10 with 10 centering and corners have over a BGS 9.5 with quad 9.5 subs or higher? There are 311 bgs 9.5's compared to only 21 bgs 10's current (with zero black labels, and 14 with 10 centering and corners).

Is 3x fair, or is that too low? I know that for some players such as Kobe the BGS 10 will sell for like 5x more than the 9.5.

Well, considering that centering and corners are usually prioritized over surface and edges I would say a card can have better subs without having to be a higher grade. By your logic, all graded cards should share the same perceived value as long as they have the same total grade.

It's gonna be a long month (or more) for KD investors.
But fortunately the tentative prognosis turned out to be on the more favorable side of what it could have actually turned out to be and the Warriors are still favorites. I still believe if they win it this year with KD's help, prices will go higher--but now there's a lot more uncertainty in the mix.

Well they did lose last night without KD and will now have to adjust to replacing the presence that he had on the team which was pretty immense (scoring, rebounds, blocks, minutes). Curry has not been the dominant force he was in the previous 2 years. They play the Rockets and Spurs twice before the end of the season. It's not gonna be easy for the Warriors to hang on to the #1 seed.

Otherwise, it becomes hard to justify his prices. Keep in mind that in January of 2016, LeBron Chrome RC's graded PSA 10 were selling for $300. He already had six NBA finals, 2 rings, a lot of MVP's and on track to be a top five player of all time. Durant is selling for $360 right now and what does he have to show for it? One finals appearance, one MVP and now a real chance to miss out on his first title.

agreed, I had no idea Durant prices were this high until I checked this thread. Yeah he's a great player, but this is his age 28 season, and like you pointed out, still no rings. Only an MVP to hang his hat on. That's not enough to justify the prices these were bringing pre-injury. I do think he keeps going up but prices are so high that I'd be fool not to cash out now. I've held for too long on some players and simply refuse to turn down a medium six figure profit ... lesson learned the hard way a few times.

The entire reason I started buying only LeBron chrome was because Curry mania had just hit full throttle, and LeBron was being left behind from a value perspective. Shear luck he won a title last year but even if he hadn't, look at what he's accomplished in his career vs any other current player; it's not close ... and yet in January of last year, Curry was outselling him. It was ridiculous.

And Durant prices today, even on raw, terrible centered chrome. Also ridiculous. Unless he takes over the NBA immediately, there are simply better buys out there, and a knee injury cripples that ability.

If Kevin Durant wins MVP three straight years after this one, and makes five straight NBA finals (winning at least two of them) he'll have accomplished what LeBron has accomplished as of May of 2016. And none of that matters because as of writing this, his chrome RC value is higher than LeBron's was after 4 MVP's, 2 Titles and 5 straight finals appearances (now 6).

Durant chrome values are incredibly inflated. Sure, they can rise, but it will take nothing short of the greatest stretch of play in NBA history to do so.

I've been silently watching Durant chrome prices from afar, and I have to say...things were reaching unjustifiable levels. Like stated, they were already eclipsing LJ chrome prices from earlier in the season, and he is the most decorated basketball player in the game. Durant has scoring titles and an MVP...same things Karl Malone hoarded during his career.

The thing that hurts most with injuries is seller fear turns into a flooded market which in turn further drops prices as sellers are in a rush to undercut each other and get out. And the buyer pool becomes smaller due to the aforementioned fear and increased risk assessment.

They'll eventually normalize, but I don't think we're there yet, as I feel they were grossly overvalued to begin with.

It will truly take a championship run for them to rebound. And even then, if Durant prices soar back up to near-Lebron levels, then I fear the world may have officially lost its mind.

A healthy card market needs two things to succeed consistently. An active, rising star, and a star that people want to collect. If Durant does not win a title this year, his star is not rising anymore. And collectors will look to the next young group of possibilities to dominate the NBA because the chances Durant becomes a truly elite, one a kind player that justifies a $500 chrome RC is somewhere between 0 and less than 0.

I do think he keeps going up but prices are so high that I'd be fool not to cash out now. I've held for too long on some players and simply refuse to turn down a medium six figure profit ... lesson learned the hard way a few times.

The entire reason I started buying only LeBron chrome was because Curry mania had just hit full throttle, and LeBron was being left behind from a value perspective. Shear luck he won a title last year but even if he hadn't, look at what he's accomplished in his career vs any other current player; it's not close ... and yet in January of last year, Curry was outselling him. It was ridiculous.

And Durant prices today, even on raw, terrible centered chrome. Also ridiculous. Unless he takes over the NBA immediately, there are simply better buys out there, and a knee injury cripples that ability.

Stats are important but are not the end all be all. Likewise, championships don't necessarily equal a guarantee rise in prices if the demand simply isn't enough to soak up the supply and chase the price higher. Cleveland is not a big market team and does not appeal to the global fan base nearly as much as Golden State does. People keep quoting Lebron's achievements as basis for his prices going up but realistically that's a age-old market selling tactic. The markets are future looking and based on supply and demand. Smart money is selling Lebron and buying future risers.

It was a freak accident what happened to KD's knee but fortunately he dodged a bullet and will be back without any permanent set-backs. The same thing (or worse) could happen to any other player at any moment. Lebron doesn't likely have five good years left ahead of him but KD and the Warriors do.

Your opinion is as valid as anyone else's but I'd say that the sports card market is a lot less active than you portray it to be. Partly because of the high transaction costs (shipping and commissions), I would speculate that people hold on to their cards if things don't work out rather than just sell them at a loss. Either way, there's no easy way to prove this.

If KD comes back in time for the first round of the playoffs and the Warriors begin to dominate again would you say his star would be rising again? Because if not, I'm willing to bet that plenty of people will be wanting to buy his cards again then even before winning a championship. If they win and the team holds it core until next season, I'd bet prices would rise much higher than the current levels you state are already outrageous and unsustainable. Right now the market for his cards is definitely spooked but I'd venture to say smart money is buying if a deal is to be had now.

I certainly don't disagree w/ you that hype can be a monster. But hype is not sustainable for a 15 year NBA career. It comes fast, and goes even faster, and the hype for Kevin Durant is now ... gone. It may very well return but again, can only do so if Durant returns healthy and Golden State wins an NBA title. And then from that point on, Durant will continue to have to be healthy, a scoring machine, and continue to win NBA titles.

Whether that happens or not, I do not know. What I do know is that there is no way in hell I touch a Kevin Durant RC at current prices. Too much future, not enough present or past baked into current value.

Last year for Curry was a historical capturing lightning in a bottle scenario, though.

Sure, they are the same fanbase, but Curry was the league MVP, had one of the best shooting years in league history, and the Warriors were en route to taking down the Bulls reign as the greatest regular season team.

This year, the only thing KD has going for him that Steph didn't is that...he simply joined them.

I don't doubt the hobby can be irrational, but there were definitely a fair amount of non GS fans that were helping to inflate prices by getting in with hopes of flipping and riding the ascending wave. It inevitably shakes some of the leaves from the tree and devaluates consumer confidence.

Same with any stock that has a recent negative press..that's just how markets work.


Prices will definitely pick back up IF they can win the championship, but returning to their previous levels is anything but guaranteed. And right now the possibility of that championship occurring is far from the shoe-in the media made it out to be before the season started.

This is the truth.

All of the arguments against Kevin Durant in this thread could have been made at any point in time in the past 5 years. He's getting old. LeBron is beating him in accolades (albeit playing in the Easy East), etc. Yet...all it really took was getting him on a team that is leading the league in wins...where KD is the shining star on that team to push prices up over $300 for 9.5s and $400 for PSA 10s.

There is a very easy argument to make that once KD does in fact come back healthy, win his ring against LeBron in the finals, that ALL of that wonderful attention Bron has been getting will indeed shift over to the 4-5 year dynasty wave that KD is just about to start riding.

I hope NC is correct. I'd love to buy more Durant if and when these seller's start undercutting to get out of their "investments."

Ultimately, this comes down to hedging your bet against whether KD will be healthy or not. If KD is healthy, this is a no brainer investment as GSWs are the favorite to win the championship. If KD is not healthy, or this adversely affects his play such that the GSW do not advance, then yes, prices will fall.

I have about 40 kd bgs 9.5/psa 10s I paid on average 80 for. I will probably sell some now and hold a few.

Ever since he did get hurt I have had an amazing amount of inquiries asking to buy so I feel the market is still stable but agree take the money and run because you never know when it will fall out within reason. I am in these so cheap I couldn't care if they went to 150 again but I don't think they will..

At the same time the new rc class blows and panini keeps pumping out non rc autos.. so what do people buy?
I'm torn but the logical side of me says dump and buy some more LeBron/Jordan patch autos/autos.

It was a full box at the Wal-Mart in Lodi,CA. Trust me, you don't forget stuff like that. Don't quote me on the price but it was a lot less than $1200 today.

I currently live in that global market that you speak of and have NEVER met anyone who thinks like this. People in the global market usually haven't even heard of golden state. They've heard of San Francisco, but they currently play in Oakland, lol. I've even visited your location of Vancouver. If you're an all time great player, market never really matters with collectors. LeBron's stuff is getting harder and harder to find at good prices. His sells have steadily risen over the course of his career. You can ignore that fact, but it doesn't make it less true.

Probably, but pretty remarkable that Durant PSA 10 just sold for nearly $600 and Bron at about $1,000 so the gap is closing quick. Another performance like tonight and it will even be closer.

I'm still dumbfounded how his base Chrome seems to be more desirable than cards such as his Sp Authentic auto patch. It's probably his second best rookie behind Exquisite and one with a nice patch and in decent shape can't even pull $800.

I sold my Durant Topps Chrome /1499 in late January. I had it listed on eBay for like $399.99 OBO and someone messaged me aggressively looking to make an off eBay deal. They started flying off eBay with every BIN being hit pretty much regardless of price that month. I saw the fix coming, I shouldn't have sold it...

It died down for awhile and looks like its trending the same way again now.

Glad I got both my Lebron and Durant TC ref rcs before these crazy hype prices. I've been collecting TC rcs for years now but have had to slow down recently due to the uptick in prices. I actually almost nabbed a Curry ref the summer before he hit hobby hypeville when they were going for $200 or so but got outbid several times. Now I'll probably never own that one, oh well.. I also passed on a ton of Dirk refs when they were going for $60.. doh

It's funny, people still hold on to that one $600 sale like it was the going rate. Fact of the matter was PSA 9s were selling for $300-400 during the peak last year. If they had won the title, they would probably still be pushing $300+ at this point. Either way, still pretty cool that a base PSA 10 can go for $650. Great sign for the hobby.

There have been several raw cards go for over $200 in the past few weeks. $140 is not close to the high. It all depends on condition. Centering is tough and black borders are tough, so if the card looks "mint" people are paying $200 raw.
