What are everyones thoughts on the future value of Topps cards?

I know they wont go the way of Pacific or Collectors Edge but you never know. Out of sight ,out of mind.

I do believe Rookie Refractors are going to not only hold value but will be sought after big time down the road. Especially clean, centered ones.

What are your thoughts?

With 10 new products coming out every week supply will surely catch up to demand. higher end rookies will hold value or increase in my opinion. The demand for star rookies will always be there and the supply will only get smaller and smaller since they can only make cards for that players rookie year for ONE year. As the years go on these cards will be hard to find due to a lot of them sitting in a collectors collections. Supply and demand

But they aren't out of site. They still make baseball cards. I agree with your thought about nice RC's.

Topps has history and was highly collected. Pacific and Edge were neither. Pacific was nice, Edge was nice, but they weren't Topps or Upper Deck or Playoff.
People will always want Topps card because over 75% of football cards are Topps. At some point you may see Playoff/Panini products from similar year garner more attention, the same way Topps garner more attention than the Philadelphia and Bowman Vintage, but not enough to cheapen the value of Topps.

Been hearing this same thing for 20 years

I very much believe in the bolded. Some might call it an investment opportunity...

My 401k opportunity awaits eBay value premium services.
As long as I ship with D.C. And a signature; my 100k investment of Brady, lebron and Kobe chrome refractors is safely in PayPals protection policy :)

If you're only leveraging your 401k, you're not doing it right. At minimum, you should have at least a 2nd mortgage on the line. Better yet, your kids college funds and a personal line of credit should be involved, too...

Take a quick look at what's happening with chrome rc's in basketball, completely out of control, I would expect similar in football over the next year or two

what is happening with them? I would think they will only increase in price, everyone loves topps and they made great products.

Another thing that I think helps -

I'm one of those people who collected baseball cards a ton as a kid, and just got back into it in 2012 in my 30s.

For me, I still see the Topps/Chrome base as the "true" RC of a player. It will probably always be "the" brand for me, because it was and still is in baseball. (and I don't even collect baseball anymore)

Wonder what a Dak or Zeke refractors would sell for if they had topps chrome. Would they be higher or the same with current Prizm/Optic prices?

So the question remands, what will happen with the future value of Topps?

Topps is the brand for you, and Chrome/Topps is the "true" RC. So will you just not collect cards past 2015 for football? People that like to collect rookies have no Topps for 2016 going forward. So a new king must be crowned.

People are pointing back to 90's basketball cards and the value of those Topps cards, but you are looking at a handful of sets and most certainly players. You cant judge Topps values going forward based on 90's BB cards. What else is there to collect from that era? Hoops?

I think key rookie cards will always be key. Topps, Fleer whatever. If they are the best you can buy for that player they are a solid investment. But the middling and lower stuff will continue to decline.

If a middling player has a Topps Chrome auto from 2012 and the same for Contenders that year, I'd assume the contenders will be more valuable in the future since there will continue to be more collectors of that brand each year. If a new collector joins the hobby today, Chrome/topps would mean very little to them. But if Panini keeps their strangle hold on the NFL, now and 10 years from now all of those new collectors would have zero connection to a brand that died long ago, much like Pacific or Collectors Edge. But they most certainly will know Certified, Prestige, Contenders, Prizm ETC. And if they do latch on to a set, they might turn around and buy up previous years for their PC.

Dont under estimate set/brand collectors. They are a loyal base. Once they brand/set is gone, they usually move on to something more active. You might love Topps Chrome, but are you still only going to be chasing singles from pre-2016 10 years from now?

Just checked and a 2007 Kevin Durant Chrome Base RC goes for around $100.

Obviously he's a superstar and the set is ten years old, but that's pretty impressive IMO.

I didn't collect until 2014, so Why are some years better for bowman chrome vs. topps chrome?

Some players only had Bowman Chrome cards, usually its a deeper checklist for rookies. I think (unless somehow one was a SSP) Topps Chrome will always trump Bowman in value and collect-ability

I think they will be all right....

I think junk will be junk but if you have a card that is coveted/important/iconic then it wont matter.

Examples go as far back as sets like t206, cracker jack, in baseball

for basketball you got 48 bowman, topps vintage basketball, modern era upper deck

Football you got mayo plug, the philadelphia butkus and sayers rcs, wild stripe favre, sp authentic brady, manning rcs.... and so on

...certain cards you just cant deny.

So many cards that define an era.... once they are established, then i dont think you can deny them.

Football and basketball for certain. But in Baseball its Bowman Chrome.

The new king will be crowned of course but comparing Dak prizm to Carr Topps Chrome is comparing apples to oranges and not really what the OP was addressing
