Is there anyone here who will buy 100's of the same base RC? Do you Hoard a certain player and just buy everything you can? I recently started buying Ben Simmons base Donruss/Hoops/Prizm. I've piled up around 60 or so so far but plan on sticking with it until the start of next season and hopefully be able to do some flipping of my own. Right now I'm buying lots at $1.00-$1.50 each for Donruss/Hoops and $16-$20 each for Prizm...If he comes out and does anything at all besides get injured I should be able to double my money at minimum...So my question is....Has anyone ever done this? Has it worked out? Do you have pictures?

I had 200 Jabari parkers prizm rookies. I paid up to $3 per and typically paid less. I lost probably $1.25 each on Average. I got bored with holding them.

This is why I struggle to hold multiples of a card. Boredom, and I would rather go after other cards and let others have a chance at the cards.

Also, my budget is not unlimited like some hoarders.

It's too much of a business like approach for my liking.

When I had about 30 left I was able to move them for about $4 a piece. I made a some on a little and lost a little on a lot. It wasn't a ton of money and I underestimated how much I truly value my time.

I hear that...I'll most likely get bored eventually but for now I'm on it lol. It helps that its a low end card and theres a gazillion of them. And really...I gotta try and recoup some funds that ive thrown away on Karlos Williams cards:doh:

Can be a much bigger payoff than hoarding more expensive rookie cards in terms of % ROI, but can also require a lot more work. Depends on the branding, budget, and goals.

The biggest issue most people run into is holding for so long trying to bank on sustained greatness/hobby longevity. Realistically, it's playing very bad odds, as only the top 5 or so best players in the league (with championships) have the greatest chance of price sustenance.

Like the old saying goes, Buy the rumor, sell the news. When you start seeing said player plastered all over espn and the nba.com homepage, it's usually a good idea to start taking profits.

Playoff time can also see some bumps.

I have 30+ copies of almost all of Mike Muscala's rookie autos. Pretty excessive.

The chance that you're going to make a significant amount of money by hoarding any type of collectibles, especially sports cards, is very very low. Unless you plan on holding them for the next 100 years.

Simmons stuff absolutely will decline in the offseason. If you look at pretty much every other super hyped rookie it's around a 50% drop but could very well be more. Buying his prizms at $16-20ea you'll never make any money after sales fees and taxes. Even if he comes out strong next year the chances a base prizm will sell for more than $20 is next to nothing.

The sports card market is not a "hold and appreciate" market. 99.99% of all cards will depreciate in the mid/long term. The only way to make any money is to either get lucky or sell as soon as a spike hits, big game, trade news etc...

Right...I'm not trying to get rich...just trying not to throw money away. There is definitely money to be made at current prices if he comes out and plays like a stud. There are base Prizm RC's that sell for $30+...Am I saying that is a definite with Simmons...No...but, He's a great ball player, the Hype is there...up and coming team...Who knows..maybe I'm crazy. Ultimately though its not about making a million bucks...its about finding that $2 share of stock that hopefully I'll eventually be able to sell for $5-$10 a share ya know.

I actually thought this was a joke. You're telling me buying ben simmons prizms at 16-20 and you think if he does anything besides get injured you will double your money? Good luck. Simmons is the furthest thing from a sure thing he can not shoot a basketball and is not very athletic. Thinking his prisms will sell for 32-40 just by him playing is crazy. You will need to wait a very long time. Your best bet is small guys I bought 100 jokic prism cards for about 78$ total and sold for well over 1k at 20 $ a card no way it doubles or triples best bet is random players.

EDIT: Also simmons is a rookie next year with these big time players coming in for the rookie class next year yikes man.

When it comes to base RC I stick with just one, I do not have any need to pick up multiples. The only time I pick up multiples, besides by accident or in a group/lot, is when it includes a relic and I can find cards with different color relics in them.

I had 1000 copies of Shawn Bradley's Stadium Club Rookie Card. Last year, I sold 500 of them at $250.00 each. Not bad. The First Day Issue cards were just too expensive to invest in and are ridiculously expensive now.
