View Full Version : Will BVG or PSA grade this?

I picked this card up at a card show quite awhile back and just came across it again while doing some sorting this morning.

To make a long story short, the guy at the booth owns a card shop and while putting this card in the box to sell, the other owner teased him and bet him that he couldn't sell it for $5. He offered me the card, told me about the bet, and I bought the card. I am from WV and West is obviously the ultimate WV star athlete. Plus I just thought the card was funny...obviously a kid enjoyed this card at some point. The seller was very nice and buying this led to lots of extra conversation and some other good deals. He also called the other owner from the show and I told him over the phone that I liked the card and had purchased it. :D

So here is my question: I think it would be cool to have the card slabbed but will Beckett or PSA grade this card with the drawn on sideburns? Not sure if this would be considered as "altered"....

Yes. They'll slab it. They'll just grade the surface accordingly.

Yes, I'm pretty sure they would grade it. You'd just take a big hit on the surface though. I've seen quite a few vintage cards with writing on them.. I don't think it would be "altered" since the altering in question isn't trying to cover up a flaw, say touching up corners..For a PC item, I'd say go for it..

You could just have them slab it and authenticate it, without grading it. That's what I'd do.

Yep, they will grade it, but because of the ink, it would likely get a qualifier with a very low grade to boot (Maybe a 3(MK) at best).

That, my friend, is an 11! He has made it much better. Would be a 12 if he continued with the mustache...

Maybe not an 11, but certainly a 1/1........

A muttonchops addition? Definitely an eBay 1/1. But as for grading, they will but it will be significantly lowered and possible marked as altered.

You could try removing the ink with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, then put some heavy books on top to try to flatten-out the surface indentations that were made by the ball-point pen.
