View Full Version : Ball Bros are a joke

First off I'm no HS or BB expert. However after listening to the hype machine that is Papa Ball you'd think his son's were all baby LeBron's. My oldest boys are in awe over YouTube highlights and gaudy numbers. My youngest son however kept saying they were way overrated. Who was right?
After watching 30 seconds of ESPN highlights this morning looks like my little guy was right: THEY SUCK. They couldn't even get out of the semifinals! With about 2 minutes left, down by ONLY 5, the douche bag with the stupid haircut throws up one of the worst shots I've ever seen and MISSES BADLY. NOT EVEN CLOSE! Hero shot by a chump. I've seen better shots at a 6 grade rec game.
They seem like typical AAU players that play for themselves and have shitty fundamentals. Total frauds. They play like spoiled, entitled punks. They were only down two or three baskets: why take such a bad shot??? Because they are special that's why. Reality check: you two just got beat by a team most of America has never heard of. You aren't special just because your helicopter father says so. LEARN THE GAME. Nice defense LaMelo, I'd pull my son off the court if he played "D" like LaMelo did at the end of the game. Who's "coaches" these guys????
Time for Papa "I'd smoke MJ" Ball to shut the **** up take a step back. Get his kids a buzz cut, make them shot, run, dribble until they puke. Then make them do it over and over again. Who cares if you are a YouTube star: there are plenty of "ballers" that have more talent in the pinkies that never made it to the NBA. Time to work on their BB skills and forget their "branding". Right now their "brand" is trending down, down, down. That family can't fade fast enough for me.
For those that might think that I'm an a*****e for destroying HS players all I can say is grow up. If those boys weren't hyped by their old man no one, including me, would know who they are thus I would not be ranting. They would just be another talented family that fades into obscurity once they graduate from HS, another big fish in a small pond. Their family created the hype, made them YouTube stars, and has ESPN (fraud network) drooling over these dumb ass kids showing their lowlights. They are public figures whether they like it or not. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. Bye, bye billions........

I might not be as fired up as u oldschool but I agree with u. He seems like a grade A jackass. I wish MJ would crush him with his wallet. I know UCLA will not say anything because the kids can play, at least Lonzo can- but they have to be sick of Papa Balls antics.
Since the first time I heard him speak I could tell his kids are his cash cows, but then it was reaffirmed when he said "......I'm looking for a billion dollar shoe deal for my three sons, you don't have to pay ME all at once, you can just pay ME 100 million a year". Like I said- Pap Ball is a greedy jackass.

Except he didn't say that... He said "And you don't even have to give it to me all up front. Give us $100 mil over 10 years"
And the give it to "me" part is actually smart on some level since you can't be paying kids up front that aren't even in College yet.
He's still a douche.
But if you're going to quote him you need to quote him correctly.

No money on the game! I'm just pissed about how AAU and helicopter parents are ruining BB (and a lot more for that matter). Teach fundamentals before letting kids chuck up 3's. ESPN is also to blame, it's all about being on the Top 10.
AAU should be outlawed. Stop kids from playing 1 sport year round, let them be kids. Back in the day the best athlete was a 4 sport athlete not a single sport specialist. And people wonder why kids burn out by HS and get hurt. No one had major injuries when I grew up in the 80"s!

Or maybe, he's acting like a huge douche to take the pressure off his boys...that would be a huge shocker, but from what I can tell, he's crazy enough to do something like that.
Regardless, it's gonna be, uhm, entertaining seeing him when his son is playing in the NBA.

Perhaps. Either way people get worked up pretty easily over pretty small stuff.
Lavar Ball is simply a blowhard that exaggerates everything... but we all get this... He's a hype machine that gets the last name in the news. He's a Tennis parent. He's a Golf parent. This just happens to be a team sport where we don't see it as much. At the same time at least he's there for his kids. He's always got their back based on everything you read. Even if it's over the top.
Would anyone pay attention to UCLA and Lonzo Ball (as a casual fan) if you didn't know that Lavar was the Dad? How many people (again casual fans) have any idea that Markelle Futz will probably be the #1 pick in the Draft? No one... but you know who Lonzo Ball is.
As I said in the other thread... the biggest problem? Lonzo is the only one that is legit.
His other two sons are good, not great, and while they can improve obviously since they are younger... They are long shots to make it. They aren't Lonzo. Lonzo was a Top 5 High School prospect all along. LiAngelo isn't even Top 200. LaMelo barely cracks the Top 100.
It's Rob Gronkowski and his brothers... with a louder Dad.

Again the 2 younger boys are big fish in a small pond. His father is just like most Little League dads that think their kid is going pro. Makes me sad seeing how many people waste the kids lives chasing THEIR dream whether its hitting, throwing, or catching a ball.
I know way too many people that spend 10K a year on baseball camps and training and their kid sucks. AAU is only about making $$$. The coaches are just as much to blame as the parents.
Who was the last 4 year college starter/player that made it big in the NBA...Tim Duncan? I'm not sure. Charles Barkley is right: stay in school and learn the game. I bet one and dones would be a thing of the past if NBA contracts weren't guaranteed like the NFL. Player would have to know the game in order to get paid. No more drafting a kid then babysitting him for 2-3 years only to cut him when he doesn't pan out. Perform or bye bye.

Sounds like you are more taking out your frustrations about the system on Lavar Ball...

you make it seem like they lost to a bad team, bishop montgomery is one of the top teams in the nation. sure lavar ball talks too much which makes people want to hate his kids, but his kids are good and were already well known before lavar got all this attention.

I haven't posted on here in a long time, but I've got an opinion. I rarely get offended by anything, because everyone is entitled to have a say as far as I'm concerned, but this is a little bit ridiculous. As an AAU basketball coach at a fairly successful program, allow me to clarify some things regarding how AAU works. -
With few exceptions, AAU programs are run by people who have the kid's best interest at heart. They rarely make money unless sponsored by a shoe company (my program is sponsored only to support low income kids ability to attend tournaments, etc.). Believe me, the amount of work my boss does versus what he gets paid is a travesty. Our program only hires coaches who were former players (no dads or former wanna be players). As I'm older than every other coach, I've had to adapt my coaching style to best utilize the skills of our players, which means I've had to adjust my mindset on how the game is played now. It's just different than when I played.
I use an old school approach with practice methods because quite frankly, they still work, and kids want the discipline (I know the parents love it, because that's how coaches were when they played). However, the rules have changed and I've had to adjust. Our program emphasizes fundamentals primarily, and adding individual excellence once the fundamentals are reached. We're developing a system that incorporates old school philosophy with new school techniques.
I've had to turn away many parents from private lessons because their kids are just too young. I do agree that specialization is a huge issue, but realistically, if you want to advance beyond high school, you have to specialize year round for most kids.
The Ball brothers are products of a brash father, social media, and word of mouth. They aren't reinventing the wheel of basketball. Go watch old video of Loyola Marymount from 1989-92, that's the style Chino Hills plays, it's not new to basketball, it's the same system I played in during college. Lot's of fun but difficult to master, actually.
Lonzo is fantastic, LiAngelo is an above average high school player, and LaMelo is a great passer and ball handler who takes terrible shots, but again, it's the system they play, they'll learn when they get to college.
Just my ten cents.

It was easy to miss the thread that already existed being that it was stuck at the top of the page for the last 4 days.
As for the kids I started the original thread focused on the father because he has made himself the focus of the attention. His children may, or may not make it in the league. At this point in time though they are still just that, children. I personally would refrain from focusing too much attention on them. It's not good for the kids, and it's not a good reflection of us as adults. Whether the kids are part of basketball's elite or not is not a reflection of them as people. Dad's actions? That is a reflection of who he is as a person.

Two weeks old on an online site that takes tiny action compared to other books.
Ucla is ~+1200 to win and has the 6th - 8th best odds
Kansas, North Carolina, Villanova, duke, gonzaga and Arizona seem to be the top 6 in that order.

Fair enough. It's not like a lot of sports analysts don't have them in their brackets to win, though.
I don't think it'd be a huge upset if they took it all.

Sorry I wasn't looking at the exact quote, the part I was referring to was when he said "you don't have to give it to ME all up front", so it seems like you understood the "me" point. But thank you for pointing out the rest. And I don't think it's that smart since the deal couldn't involve all 3 sons until at minimum 2020 after LaMelo is done with his 1 year at UCLA.
Maybe, just maybe he is smart in a sense that he has gotten crazy attention on himself and his boys, but I do not believe that all attention is good attention. The guy is an attention whore at best.

I can't wait to watch this ship sink...
Being on the West Coast, I've got to see Lonzo Ball play a lot. He's definitely got game, but is it an NBA game? Not sure if he plays D and his jump shot is tough to watch. But he makes plays and looks to have a pretty good IQ for a PG.
I've watched a few lengthy highlights of his 2 younger brothers and I don't see where they are anything special. LaJello looks slow but gets off a decent shot. LaMelo is only a Sophomore but is showing really bad habits . . . like really bad.
Has anyone seen a top-tier college or NBA team play like their High School team??
Their dad is an idiot for letting his kids play that style of basketball.
Real world is gonna slap those Balls around soon enough and we'll all get to witness it thanks to Papa Ball...

Two of them will be out of the NBA in under 3 years.
