First Time Owner Advice

So okay i vowed never to play fantasy baseball because it seemed like it was an exhausting amount of upkeep. My buddy needed someone to take over the LAST place team in like a 6 year running keeper league, so basically i had to work from the ground up.
First of all, i know very little about baseball, second of all, I drafted the best i could of my knowledge. Scoring is Rotisserie.
Everyone seems to have more pitchers than i do. I only have 1 extra pitcher, so i'm thinking about picking this dude up: Santiago Casilla RP
but i need to know who is droppable... I'm well aware that my team is not great, but i'm having to build up from scratch here. Keep in mind also that this is keeper league to and i need to plan for the future too maybe?

thanks for the honesty. there are 12 teams in this league. i'm probably sitting at around 8th right now. But if edwards is expendable then i'll drop him to pick up someone else.

I'd be looking to add Haniger and Garrett. Edwards is an easy drop for one of them. Given the history of your team and where you're at now, you should be looking for guys whose value has a chance to go way up, and both Haniger and Garrett are off to great starts. I might also look at trading some of your older big names like McCutchen and Abreu if you can get someone younger in return. Might be easier as the season goes on and the contenders separate themselves from the nons

In roto, some relievers can be valuable- The guys that get saves, have a high K/9, and keep a low ERA. Elite non-closer relievers (i.e. Miller) can be valuable too, but guys like Edwards and Bush aren't going to do a whole lot for you most likely. Given your team, I think it'd be a good idea to not worry about saves this year and "punt" them (ignore that category)

i would drop dickerson or gurriel for haniger...id keep bush cuz dyson is not very good and bush would prob be the closer if they make a change...and yea edwards doesnt need to be owned...

only reason i would keep cron is upside and if abreu was to get hurt then you have a 1b...

i think i will definitely drop edwards now. Haniger will be added.

Gurriel is 1B/3B flex, and so is matt holliday OF/1B so i have backups for abreu

I dropped cron for amir garrett but i got outbid on mitch haniger so i still need to drop edwards for a hitter

I think after getting another decent hitter, i should be content to let my season run i guess.

i was also looking at Owings and Avisail Garcia, they seem to be decently productive, but i don't know much about them. Right now i've got Bird on my waiver request dropping carl edwards jr for $2

so what is typically the normal strategies in fantasy baseball with injuries? do you just straight drop them? I have a guy, marcus semien who is now undergoing surgery on his wrist. he will be out at least 6 weeks. Is this someone i should just drop or do you wait it out or does it depend on how good the player is? i do have asdrubal cabrera so I have the shortstop position filled, but i lose flexibility for 6 weeks with an injured player on my bench.

edit: one other thing, evan gattis only plays like half the games. is this common for catchers or do i need to be concerned?

I think someone like Semien isn't worth hanging on for 6 weeks. He has solid power but he hits for a low average and he's barely a top 15 SS at best. I'd drop him and maybe add another SS to back up Cabrera.

And that is common for catchers, as they always get more days off than other position players.

i've gotten a lot of Outfielders.. so i don't know if i want to add avi garcia even though he is doing really well.
whats everyone's opinion on shawn kelley as a "closer" he got a save recently even though these reports show that treinen guy is the official closer.

put in a waiver pickup for him. $4. don't know if i should be putting in more or not. so i just looked up the point breakdowns in my league for the FIRST time today. I probably should have looked at where I was the weakest. I thought pitching was was bad but i'm actually #1 in Wins, 4th in K's, ERA, WHIP. My next best stat is 5th in hrs. so out of 12 teams, i'm 8th or worst in Runs, RBI, SB's, AVG, Saves.. Most importantly i'm only earning 1.5 for Stolen Bases and Saves (i have 0 saves).. Like someone was saying, i may just not worry about saves going forward, but hopefully if i get kelley tomorrow i can maybe help that. i'm 10th in batting average and 7th in Runs and RBIs.. i'm just hoping my guys heat up or that i can make some nice pickups later...

i ended up dropping semien for shawn kelley
i got my first save from matt bush the other day! super happy! i'm now in 6th place out of 12. i'd look into cesar hernandez, but are there people you think i can drop now? next waiver add is wednesday.
bird has continued to be disappointing even though he's pretty much just been taking a bench spot for me. i know he's had potential but he seems droppable to me for cesar hernandez...

I agree Holliday has been a thorn in my side as well. conforto had a killer game last night and i had put in holliday instead and didn't see he wasn't playing AGAIN. so if I keep the upside Bird and get rid of holliday, you're thinking castro or souza. i've heard of castro but not souza, i'd also consider adding cesar hernandez based on his start.

just looked at stats, i would probably lean towards Souza or Cesar for holliday at this point. Anyone else have thoughts on this? thanks in advance for people's advice, this every day roster changing is getting to be a lot on me. turning out to be a loooot of work. I hate having to wait to know if people are going to play in a game. kind of like GTD's in fantasy football, but this is every day lol..

i've placed waivers on both cesar and souza currently dropping bird and holliday, i'm going to cancel one of them probably, but i just wanted to have a placeholder in case i forget to put in the waiver. probably going to bid 2 dollars each.

it has been done! i've updated my roster on the first post. i'm now in 5th place (i know it's a long season), but wow you guys really know your stuff! i don't know how you all do it every year, it's exhausting to me and it hasn't even been a month yet. I'm still dead last in stolen bases and 2nd to last in saves.

Hopefully i can get some stolen bases in there and start to rack up some saves. i only have 2 relief pitchers, so my saves accumulation is not very quick. Shelby Miller may be on short term DL, but he's been decent for me so i don't know if i can let him go.

It's hard to predict what RP's are possibly going to be closers. it's been frustrating in terms of getting saves right now.

What are your thoughts about this Marwin Gonzalez guy who's tearing it up on the Astros? I don't think it's sustainable but is he worth picking up? The problem is i already have 3 astros players..., but marwin is alll positions.

So i had a struggle where i moved to 8th for a while and now i'm back to 6th place. 1 point behind 5th. 10 points behind 4th. The disparity is started to shrink between the top place team and the rest of the others even though it is still a big disparity.
i'm 33.5 points behind 1st right now, but my team had a great weekend and pretty decently happy with my team right now despite not knowing what i was doing to begin with. stolen bases is my worse stat followed by saves, but i've been increasing those numbers lately, and I hope to keep building those stats and keep moving up. my goal at the end of the month was to hit 70 points. my goal at the end of this is to get top 3 out of 12 teams.

Pham is surprisingly good for me. Hes got a high batting avg and steals bases and i definitely need SB's. I only got glover because i was sure when shawn kelley was going to come back so i wanted to be covered. I may hold on to him for another few days

nunez was gone.. not many great baserunners on the block right now... Corey Knebel was a huge pickup for me. 2 saves in 4 days. mccutchen got 2 sb's yesterday but i'm still far behind in sb's... i'm about 4 away from the 11th place person...

well i'm kind of happy i kept both glover and shawn kelley since glover has been declared the closer. Dropping shawn kelley for this Clevinger pitcher out of cleveland. i need to get my WHIP and ERA down. SB's are kind of a lost cause for me, but hopefully some of my guys do better with that. i'm 10th in saves which is much better than I was before, so that's slowly coming together.

i don't have the greatest team in this 12 team league, but I think it's turning out to be semi-decent. I did end up with some stars that on the decline or not doing as well, but I'm in 5th place right now. Still didn't hit my goal of 70 points yet, but i havea few days.. not sure i'll get there. top 4 in the league are at 96, 82, 74.5, and 74 points right now. gotta build some stats up.. i'm at 64.5.
