Tell me something that has happened to you in your collecting past that will make us either laugh or cry with you.........
I just read this one today. This was on a different thread and I kept his identity secret to protect the innocent:
I had this happen a few years ago. An old friend of mine, who is probably about 60 or so, mentioned he was doing some spring cleaning and found 3 boxes of ''old, vintage cards'' that he had been given years ago.
He said there was a bunch of rookie cards, lots of football and baseball, and he'd let me have them for my kids. I didn't know what to expect, but in the week or so I had to wait to get my hands on these, I kept getting excited at the prospect of finding that hidden gem (or two, or three, or four), and so when the day finally arrived, I couldn't wait until I got off work at 3pm.
I drove straight to his house, where he greeted me with a cold beer. Starting off well, I must say. He then pointed to a coffee table, where a joint was available. He also offered me a sandwich.
As tempting as this all was...let's get to the damn cards, my friend!
So he carried the first box over to me, and opened it slowly, like in the movies. Unfortunately, no shining light spilled out, there was no suspenseful music, and yep...you guessed it, it was a box of junk. Pro-set SB cards, Neil O'Donnell rookie cards, and some crumpled-up trivia cards.
In total, I went through every single card he had, except for the clump that was ''probably'' soiled with cat piss.
I'd guess there was about 2000 cards.
I'll never get that hour of my life back, and it kind of makes me sad.

I was a 7 year old in 1982 when I met some basketball players and got a team signed ball from them. I thought it and they were cool and wanted to be like them, so of course I took the ball outside and shot on my goal in the driveway. Not long after that James Worthy, Sam Perkins and a kid Named Mike Jordan won the NCAA tourney, while my ball lost all of the signatures from being played with.

Ouch, I bet a college auto of Jordan would be pretty cool. At least you have the story.

I'm in Chicago at either the National or Sun Times show the first year basketball exquisite comes out. Prices were $600 a box or $1700 a case and the high rollers are busting all weekend. People are hitting some great cards but dealers not wanting to sell the good singles until Beckett comes out with the price guide. Finally, near the end of the day Sunday, I come across a dealer with a Lebron rookie displayed. Nice 3 color patch, nothing crazy but solid. "How much" I ask. "900" he says. My mind thinks immediately that's a good deal. It's what everyone is trying to hit in their boxes anyway and that is a box and a half price. I'd spent a lot at the show but I could have easily bought it anyway. I let my mind talk me out of it with the rationale he could never live up to the hype and $900 is about the ceiling on the card anyway. I may have been wrong. Don't know if I should laugh or cry.

True, and I have a few Jordan autos I got since then- all UNC related- but not signed in college.

One that always sticks with me is seeing the Blake Griffin 1/1 Chrome Superfractor at a show during injured his rookie year. He was still out for the year at the time and I couldn't justify the $800 price tag for a guy that had never played a single game, so naturally I passed on it, although I mulled the card over multiple times as it sat there all weekend. During his rookie year hype, I'd guess that was probably a $10K+ card.

My very first purchase went down like this. I was a member on the old beckett board back in 03 or 04. Only had a few posts at the time and no trades/purchases obviously since this would be my very first. I find a person selling a Lebron SPX rc jsy/auto and agree to pay him $605 i believe. Have no idea what paypal is or other methods so I send him a check. He deposits the check and once it clears says he will mail the card. After two weeks I am super excited to see the package arrive and get my lebron rc auto. It was just a base card of a nobody inside.:( Lets just say I have learned a lot since that very first puchase online 13 years ago.

I had his phone number and called several times. Even talked with his dad but got nothing except my son does not steal comments. Beckett ended up banning the memeber shortly after this, but to this day I still never got the spx lebron. Looking back I can't believe I sent a check for over $600 to someone I had no idea who they were, thinking I would receive that card. Dumb mistaske on my part.

Sorry that you got swindled out of your money. I am not sure how Beckett worked. Could Beckett step in and get the money back for you???

Now? No way. Back then? Still not likely.
Beckett ended up changing their entire site around 2009-10ish, if I recall correctly, and you had to pay a monthly fee to be a member and make transactions on the board. I don't remember all the specific details but I remember the changes driving away about 75% of the members they had on their forum. Beckett forums used to be the place to be back when I first got back into collecting around 2007.

Unfortunately they could not. All they could do back then was ban the member after I was able to show that they deposited my check and just sent a base card. It was my fault for sending a check and allowing it to clear to this person. All the scammer did was keep the money and accept being banned from the forum. I guess they (the scammer) didn't even try and argue it if I remember correctly.
