View Full Version : Pro Mold Magnetic Shout out

Thought I would give a shout out to the Pro Mold company. They sent me a sample magnetic and I gotta say, these are much nicer than Ultra Pro.
The case just feels higher quality and doesn't move around like ultra pro. There is some space above and below the card inside the case just like I was warned by others but the card doesn't move around at all. It's a very tight seal and the magnet is much stronger.
I know some people don't like the stronger magnet but if you use a coin to open it with the slot on top it's just as easy to open as Ultra Pro. I'd rather know it's better protected when sealed than easier to open when I don't have a coin handy.
Finally the case itself is much much clearer than Ultra Pro so I can enjoy my card more.
Anyways, I like to give good companies my business and though they should get more business from BO, especially since they're 100% American.

I love promold BUT.. I have had issues wherein after I screwed the card in their screwdowns (I know I know.. this Is about Magnetics) when I unscrew them after a while, the part of the mold (with spiral pattern for the screw) detaches completely from the front part of the frame.

Oh dang well I guess I'll stick with magnetics.

I have found you can actually use a penny sleeve if you prefer with the pro molds. The wider recesses end area has enough room for it.

Didn't know that. Thanks for the tip. I may end up changing out my One Touches if works ok. I'm always worried about an auto rubbing off in a magnetic.

I tried it and it was a pretty tight squeeze with the 20pt. Do you cut off a piece of the sleeve?

No, I didn't want to introduce rough edges in the mix. I centered the card in the sleeve, the top part of the sleeve is above the recessed area and gets pressed by the magnetic. You do need to be careful when snapping together and make sure the card is in the recessed part. Might be a little hard to tell on the photo. Sleeve and magnetic are both clear.

For those of you interested, I contacted Pro Mold and they recommended you don't use a sleeve with their magnetics but it did fit nicely for me. I decided against the sleeve because the card was not moving around. I have a couple cards that are 50pt and they move up and down a little so I sleeved those inside the pro mold.
I'll probably sleeve up any autos I have before placing them in the magnetic. My full order of magnetics arrives tomorrow so soon I'll have all my cards beautifully protected and able to display!

So it's super clear? No need to clean it? My ultra pros came with these weird gunk streaks that are dang near impossible to remove. Not sure if it's a bad batch or if others have the same problem. I'm in the market for more mags so I might give this brand a shot.
Oh that's what those magnetics were. I had a couple in my collection and I just assumed it was a newer Ultra Pro. I like those more too - have more visual appeal and feel sturdier

Yeah they're way clearer than ultra pro. I bought sleeves for them so I'll clean them before once before putting them in the sleeve but no gunk streaks for me. One of mine had a small crack but nothing outrageous. They are way sturdier than UP. I'd recommend these. They're cheaper too.

Good to hear that things are working out. I have no doubt that ProMold would be against the sleeve as is does alter their tested design. I only mentioned the sleeve because of the complaints I heard about magnetics was the surface on surface touching causing some issues. A sleeve would theoretically work the same as putting in a sleeve/toploader except mags look a ton better than toploaders.
Looking forward to seeing the display!!
PS. If it matters to some, Ultra-Pro is Chinese made and ProMold is made in U.S. That is a plus for me.
Edit to add: I am surprised ultra pro has not come out with a pre-fabbed "inner sleeve" to work with their holders. Seems like it would be a relatively easy thing to produce and probably would sell well.

I'll add some pics to this once I get everything done. Yeah I don't think the sleeves would hurt anything but I think it doesn't really add any protection unless it has an auto so might as well go with what they tested.
American made is a huge bonus. I think I mentioned that in the OP.

Got all my cards into magnetics tonight. I ended up putting my thinner cards into sleeves because they were moving ever so slightly inside the magnetic and that bothered me. It ended up looking just as clear and now none of my cards are moving around at all and fully protected. I took some pictures of my finished product. Let me know what you think!

I'm thinking of getting a couple of these, but I wish they were rated at 55pt instead of 50pt.
I have a couple cards that don't fit into the Ultra Pro magnetics I have, and I have a 120pt Pro Mold which seems to have a slightly wider recessed area to accommodate cards that were cut just a wee bit wider.
I also have a similar setup with how I store cards in magnetics, I like to lay the penny sleeve OVER the card though, not that your method would be possible because I have Ultra Pro holders.
EDIT: Oh yeah, ...what I think. I think those are AWESOME. Also, PM me your address so I can come over and nag you about NOT displaying your cards and exposing them to light! :D

Haha but Pro Molds are UV protected! This room is pretty dark. I have a dark sun shade over the one window in that room and I only have the lights on when I'm organizing/looking at cards. Plus, what's the fun in having cards if you can't look at them and enjoy them!
