View Full Version : What to do when you've lost your tracking number & eBay thief ariemendoz-8

I haven't posted in this section in a while. I am kind of past the point of calling people out, unless they are majorly disruptive, or there is something I can add. Thankfully, aside from being scammed by Ryan Poboy, there hasn't been too much of note. That is until this week, when I learned a few things I think would be valuable to pass along.
I sold a card on eBay last week, and the buyer opened a claim asking for the tracking number. Red flags were going off already, as generally if someone hasn't received the package, they will state in their claim that they want a refund because they haven't received. Also, I knew I sent the card, and know the post office doesn't just lose packages; so the verbiage being used was already making clear what the buyer was attempting to do.
I went looking for the tracking number, and I couldn't find it. I had no idea what to do. I thought maybe I could somehow find it, or go to the post office and tell them "I was here last week, this is an emergency, I need you to find my tracking #", but I wasn't exactly sure. I let the buyer know that if he could please check to see if the card was received, if it was, I would be more than willing to give him a partial refund of some sort since the package was delayed in shipping by an extra day or two, and that I did not want to go through the hassle of going to the post office. He responded telling me that he had received a lot of packages, none of which were mine, but was "willing to accept any partial refund" that I was willing to send him as he thought that was "fair". Also that the card had lost some value in the transit (the Thunder had got knocked out of the playoffs) AND he had purchased the card for his nephew who collects white sparkles! Then the warning signals in my head went off, and I called his bluff. I told him, theres no way that if you had not received the package, that you would be willing to accept a partial refund, and I would appreciate it if he would just close the case and not make us go down this road (me having to go to the USPS to get the tracking #, and filing a case against him with eBay & potentially the USPS).
There was a bunch of back and forth, with me pleading with him to do the right thing, and him sending a lot of "upload the tracking" - "God Bless" etc. I made it clear I knew he was stealing from me, and to do the right thing, and all it was met with was passive aggressive taunting.
So, against everything the internet says about not being able to go to the post office to get a tracking number... Don't listen to that. I went to the post office yesterday, and asked the clerk if she could look up a tracking number I had lost LAST week. She said sure, no problem. Do you have any sort of information I could use to look it up? I was surprised, and said: "yes, I have my bank transaction receipt". She says, "all I need to know is the date, and the amount". Sadly, she found nothing... It was clear I went back to the wrong clerk. Today, I went to the right clerk, and within 2 minutes she found my tracking # by me telling her the time I was there, and the amount of the transaction. You can do this for up to a month. Thankfully, I have an awesome post office.
I uploaded the tracking # today, which shows the card was delivered on Saturday. The attempted scam began with this buyer on Monday night when he opened the case.
Moral of the story here is - if you lose your tracking #, you aren't out of luck. Just remember what time you went to the USPS, and who your clerk was.
As I write this, another person is asking me for a tracking # from an item that was delivered 2 weeks ago. I guess another moral of the story is, if you want to save yourself a world of hassle, always upload a tracking #. There are way too many thieves out there. Then again, maybe this is a good way to weed out the thieves in the long run if eBay would ever look into it. They can't help but try to scam.

any reason why you don't print your label using ebay? it's cheaper and it automatically add the tracking.

Buyers know that if you have no tracking info they can rip you off, I would recommend printing off labels at home through eBay, it automatically will upload your tracking info.

I think if you would have added the tracking number up front then you wouldn't have to deal with this kind of nonsense.
Sure, the buyer was scummy and wanted a free card since he saw that there was no tracking attached to the eBay purchase but your initial laziness would have nipped this whole situation in the bud.

I still do it the old fashioned way, hit the PO on my lunch break but I upload all tracking within the hour. Also, I have asked sellers to upload tracking before when I haven't gotten an item. That verbage shouldn't set off any red flags. If I haven't gotten the item yet then I ask for a tracking # before a refund in case it was delayed (or to see if the seller actually shipped yet).

This whole thing could have been avoided if you just print the label off ebay.

This is why I cleared out my ebay (Check it out and see that it is empty)and come back real hard and vowed to never sell anything under $10 ever again.

And this is why I lurk way more than I post. The OP didn't do anything wrong, yet people are quick to blame him. It's essentially victim blaming. Someone tried to scam him and you guys go after him. Not to mention that he's providing some solid advice about getting tracking numbers from the PO.
Should he have uploaded the tracking numbers immediately? Absolutely, but to blame him for someone else's dishonesty is absurd. One day I hope I'm perfect so I can criticize everyone else.

Its okay if they missed the point: Info on what to do if you lost the tracking number....
and they continue to give advice even though stated in the OP:
if you want to save yourself a world of hassle, always upload a tracking #
I think there are enough people that will read this thread that will heed caution and do what I said, and everyone else who has replied - and upload your tracking... to save a headache... and if you don't... well, now you know you can go to the post office and get saved (restating).
And oh yeah, scammers suck. I am with you though, this is why I lurk more than I post now.
Hopefully this information helps at least a couple of you in the future.

You should consider yourselves lucky that you have inexpensive tracking available to you. I'm in Canada. Cheapest tracking I have within Canada is $14 CDN (about $10 USD). Cheapest to the USA is around $17 USD. For anything with serious value, it's about $22 USD.
Meanwhile, at the USPS, you can send a package from Juneau to Honolulu for $2.67 with DC.
Envy doesn't even begin to cover it.

It's bloody sad that buyers are like this. Where's the honesty these days? All in an attempt to get a few dollars or a free card.
I'd encourage everyone who has had this happen to them before to name and shame the buyers.

Nobody said that he did wrong. Yes, the OP was the victim, when i look at these replies, i do not see him being blamed for what happened, i see sound advice that is meant help anyone who uses ebay to sell. If you print and ship through ebay, it automatically uploads and you do not have to worry about losing your receipt or remembering which clerk that you went to or the time of day that you went. But i guess people see things differntly.

In the event I dont use ebay to ship a package this is what i do. I will take a few pictures of the reciept and of the package with the tracking number on it. I will then name the picture. This way is i forget to upload the tracking its in my pictures and the cloud.

Bruh, you have 2 less years on your belt and you more posts than me. Your first statement is 100% invalid. :coffee:
No one is "victim blaming" anyone, no one is "going after" OP. Is it a true statement that if OP had added tracking that the buyer would not have had the opportunity to scam?
You even say yourself "should he have...." Does this statement mean you are "Going after OP" also? Think about it, cupcake.

Take another look at the math, almost four years. Also, post/year is in no way an indicator of lurking vs posting. If someone took a look at the distribution of my posts you would see heavy periods of posts where I was interested in something, but very large periods of general inactivity. However, considering your use of "bruh", I'll give you a pass on basic math.
And all you are doing is proving my point. So many people here are so quick to post negative things, such as calling the OP lazy, that they don't even look at the basic message. The negativity here is absolutely astounding.
The fact is that nobody needed to comment about the OP not recording the tracking number. Why? Because he said it himself. That wasn't the point of the thread. The OP said from the get-go that he should have uploaded it. The point of the post was that the post office can retrieve tracking numbers. That's news to me (and apparently others). But then everyone had to throw their two cents in on the act of uploading the tracking number because this forum is full of geniuses who never make a mistake.

I was going to attack your post and the irony of this statement in particular but then saw Myers completely agreed with what you said. That sums up your post better than anything I could have written.
This is why you should never post in this section.

Can we have the name of the buyer so to block him? or did I miss it...
Also to add, I think the tracking number is also on your receipt from the post office... in case you lose the tracking slip... or did you lose the receipt...it has been a long time for me... not sure what is the exact "process" to make sure if have tracking on domestic mail.

It's extra funny since he never bothered to actually message me, and only attached a message to the request itself:
Aug. 8 - The buyer didn't receive the item
Buyer requested - A refund
Comments - "Hello, it's been a while now and I still haven't received the card so I would like a refund at this point thanks anyways I won't leave negative feedback just please remember to ship small orders for other clients such as Myself"
