I am looking to get into baseball - I am a casual fan. I would like to pick up a couple of cards of some decent young guys with potential. It would give me someone to root for and a reason to start tuning into baseball. I am from the NW so any decent young guys on teams around here? I am not asking for the best investment to resell necessarily just want to dabble in baseball and I have no clue!

Honestly, Mike Trout

If prospecting, give Kyle Lewis a shot. Still rehabbing. But oozes potential.

Honestly, Mike Trout

He is a stud - Angels my favorite team because I went to a game last year. His stuff is already to high though.

Honestly, Mike Trout

I'll second this and add Kershaw in the mix as well.

Mariners, I like it. Thanks for the heads up! Will have to look into him. Any suggestions on brands/cards?

2016 Bowman Chrome - base autos are $30 - $40. Go with color non-auto if your pockets aren't as deep.

2016 Bowmans Best if your pockets aren't as deep. But definitely Chrome first.

You should definitely go with Jorge Soler. He has a new home in KC and is on the verge of busting out.

If its not about investment, then nobody can really answer that question for you. Collect who you like.

If you live in the NW, you should definitely buy some Kyle Lewis cards. He's rehabbing right now, so this would be the time to buy. 2016 Bowman Draft has his first Bowman Chrome autos. Those are the cards that tend to be the holy grail to collectors. Obviously the rarer colored autograph refractors are the best, but are pricey. Maybe start with some base and refractor autos. Good luck!!!

OP, think about it this way...

You currently own ZERO baseball cards, correct?

if that's the case, and you decide to collect Trout (i get it, his RCs are costly, but there are hundreds of his cards to choose from), then you know that you'll have all Mike Trout cards in your collection.

if someone were to ask you the same thing youve asked here, but for the NBA, would you not say "Michael Jordan"? (or Lebron if the person asking wants only current)

i sure would if asked about the NBA. Imagine having a NBA "pc" that is ONLY MJ cards?

I would tell them to pick up Booker, AD, Wiggins, etc. Prospect guys. But I hear ya!

i get it, the prospect of "making some bucks" with a prospect is very lucrative, but those players are few and far between.

i would collect trout and all young cubs players --eloy, rizzo, schwarber, bryant, russell, contreras, baez--these guys are going to be good for a long time.

If you want to prospect then I'd definitely choose Kyle Lewis for the NW flair or Tyler O'Neill and focus on Bowman

If just for PC purposes then focus on any player who fits your fancy, I'd focus on someone on the young side since they'll have more cards in the long term.

Collect a guy who is under the radar, not sure why everyone feels the need to collect big names always.

So would I but he's already really expensive.

collector: "i collect Jose Altuve!" ::big grin::

average collector: who? ::shrug::

(that's why "big names" are suggested)

Since you're an Angels fan, you can always look into their (depleted) farm system and choose someone you like from there, like Matt Thaiss or Jahmai Jones. But who knows how long they'll be Angels, though. Just food for thought.

But if it were me, I would likely choose someone within the Red Sox organization since they're my favorite team. I think collecting an Angel would provide you more excitement since you're an Angels fan.

Jahmai Jones is a good one, they seem to really like him

Find someone that:

1) You like.
2) Has a good selection of cards.
3) Is within your budget. Don't go with Trout or Bryant if you're on a shoestring budget. And there's nothing wrong with being in a shoestring budget, just choose who/what to collect accordingly.

I agree with this. Ian happ is killing it and has a lot of potential in becoming a big star.

Aaron Judge, Ian Happ, bowman cards.
I'm new to collecting too and didn't realize until recently, how well bowman cards sell for and how nice they are.

You could just buy a Hobby Box of Bowman and then follow along with whoever's autograph you pull, randomly. The rest of the cards in ghe box might give you ideas on players/teams you can start to collect.

The thing is....if you start into baseball and begin growing your collection and enjoy it, there is going to come a day when you decide Mike Trout belongs in your collection because he is the best player in baseball and no collection is complete without him. So I know its not cheap but..... MIKE TROUT now.

You should start by buying some 2017 Topps series one, like a box of it, look at the cards and pick a player you like.

Turn on some games and see who you like

Collecting based on someone else's recommendation won't end up being a fulfulling experience
