View Full Version : Biggest Baseball Card Busts

CrackinWax
05-22-2017, 11:49 AM
Whether or not we openly admit to it, we collectors at one point or another have chased at least ONE baseball card in the hopes that it would gain some sort of significant monetary or trade value. Some players and cards seem like a sure thing, but then a guy tears an elbow ligament and that card you once chased and treasured so much does nothing but collect dust and mock you and the rest of your collection. Just sitting there, pointing and you and laughing. What a bastard. I wanna know, what's the biggest baseball card bust in YOUR collection? (The jury's still out on my 2013 Byron Buxton Bowman Chrome auto—don't call him Byron BUSTon just yet!) Let me know here, and within a couple of weeks, I'll feature some of your pics on an upcoming video!

I collect what I like without regards to "value"

But I sure have sold some cards that fit the category

Probably the "biggest one was this"

Grabbed some packs at the LCS. Only 5 made. Sold that night raw for $450.

New owner had it slabbed and it came back 9.5/10 and I believe he sold on Ebay for $425.

I think mine was 4/5

2012 Bowman Chrome Red Refractor DANTE BICHETTE Jr. Auto RC 3/5 BGS 9.5 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-Bowman-Chrome-Red-Refractor-DANTE-BICHETTE-Jr-Auto-RC-3-5-BGS-9-5-/391736754580?hash=item5b35548194%3Ag%3AXgYAAOSwuLZY1FN4&nma=true&si=qbV3C7gl1cUNIObRiYIm%252Fnabdd4%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557)

The only specific card I recall buying as a prospector was the 1994 SP A-Rod I bought as a kid. Then I bought a bunch of packs and boxes with nothing to show for it...

Since then I've tried to really limit my cards to retired players or players who are established at the least (good or bad).

...But I did pick up a bunch after the fact...

Eric Anthony (90 UD), Kevin Maas (90 UD), Jerome Walton (89 UD), Brien Taylor (TSC Dome), Todd Van Poppel (91 UD), Brandon Wood (03 Chrome), Delmon Young (03 Chrome), Mark Prior (01 Ult), Rick Ankiel (99 Ult Victory).

The first sale I ever tried to make were for a dozen Dave Fleming '91 Bowman during the tail end of 9 game winning streak during his rookie season. The LCS was offering $5 a card but I wouldn't budge on $8 a card and walked away. Biggest mistake I ever made as an 12 year old.

I have never done this in all the years i have collected. I just buy and complete sets, and this type behaviour always hindered that type of collecting. Either you couldn't find certain cards you needed because people were hoarding them, or they were being sold for outrageous prices. It always kinda pissed me off personally.

What happened to the other thread with the video on the 5 worst products ever?

I watched the video. Nicely done, but 1991 Fleer, though massively produced was waaaaaay better than 88 Topps or 88 Donrus or most of the early 90s Donruss. And why pick on the insert set? The artwork was fun.

Why is 2009 Unique on the list? Who compiled this list?? Unique was overpriced, but one of the 5 worst products ever? Not by a long shot.

Also, how in the heck did Prospect Rush not make the list??

I never really prospected, but this is a good list if you add the alltime hyped prospect bust, Brien Taylor. Though, I'm not convinced that Maas and Plantier weren't the same person.

Someone mentioned Brandon Wood. Talk about a guy who killed at AAA but was horrible in the majors. Ouch.

Man Laporta brings back memories. Being a Brewer fan i though we hit the jackpot drafting him and I remember being disappointed when they traded him for C.C. knowing he was a playoff rental. In the end he never put it all together.

I'd say any major prospect from the 2000's with a Chrome Auto $100 or more. Back in the late eighties or 90's, people were buying base rookies for $1 or less for 100 count lots. With today's Chrome Auto's, people are buying ten $100 autos for $1000. It's a bigger hit to the wallet now then it was back in the day. Heck, there are prospects whose autos are at price points that are ridiculous. $300, $600, $800, $1800(red/5 usually)
