View Full Version : Can we talk about the Jamal Crawford big money patch phenomenon?

Somebody, I think it was gomiamigo, pulled a Jamal Crawford patch in a group break of NT. Somebody else mentioned that it would sell well, as there are some buyers who will pay a premium for Crawford patches. I had never heard of this before, so I looked it up on eBay and sure enough: even basic Crawford patches sell really well.

There is (or was) a similar phenomenon in baseball with Omar Vizquel. There were two or three buyers who paid huge money for his cards. I think one of them has stopped now.

I find these little oddities in the collecting world really intriguing. I mean, I have to think that if just one Crawford patch collector stopped, cards that currently sell for $50-100 will be $12 cards. Right?

Does anybody know the back story of this phenomenon?

Honestly, this was a (very minor) factor in my decision to buy the Clippers rather than the Jazz in several group breaks. And then I got a Jamal Crawford patch in the second break. I have no idea if it will still sell really well, or if each Crawford collector just wants one patch card from each set. I just love that there are people out there, apparently with some money, who zealously go after Crawford patch cards, while he has auto cards going for a fraction of the price.

There are two guys on one of a NBA facebook groups who battle it out for the patches and pay extremely well. I think those are the two heavy hitters on them - maybe more, but I know there are at least two guys who go back and forth over them.

Yes it's hilarious.

There was a recent thread of an argument between them in the FB group. It's literally 2 guys who keep trying to outdo each other. I think they tried to make a truce once and split Crawfords, but one of them didn't follow through and that led to the whole debacle. Now they are back to paying $200 for Crawford patch cards lol.

I have noticed this oddity as well in trying to put together my 15-16 Prizm gold set. I've seen 2 Crawfords pop up on ebay so far and both went for well over $50 which blew me away.

That's really interesting. Do you know how far back this feud goes?

Ride the gravy train while it's running...Vizquel stuff was crazy but I believe one of the big 2 dropped out and now it's no longer crazy from what I understand.

One guy likes to collect all patches of Jamal Crawford. Another guy started collecting Jamal Crawford and the two started competing. It turned into a pissing match over a misunderstanding. It's madness. Jamal Crawford ended up being the most expensive card in a patch set I was doing that included players like Lebron, Durant, Kawhi (RC Year) Kyrie (RC Year) among many other big names. I was drawn into the madness for awhile trying to get the patch for my set. I had to pay $165 for a Select Tie Dye patch and start bidding Crawford patches up before the Super Collector would sell me a Certified Patch /49. Ended up getting it and $100 for the Select Tie Dye Patch and retracted my extremely large bid on a Crawford 1/1 that was in auction.

When I first signed up for the big Facebook card groups a couple months ago, it seemed like every other post was those two guys going back and forth, super lame. I asked them both in threads if they were the guy who hoarded Crawford spx rc autos back in the day, which was the first huge hoard I ever heard about, neither responded so I guess that's not them.

But yeah, seems like a couple of nerds

jeremy,

i could be wrong but i believe mark "red hot cards" was the spx hoarder.

you should have seen earl's crawfords back in the day...dear lord. i remember when he gave up on crawford and he traded me the 04-05 chrome rainbow with the superfractor, and i traded the rainbow for a box of 06-07 reflections...ahhh good times.

My God. I've never been that dedicated to anything in my life.

I wonder how he's going to adjust to life when companies stop making Jamal Crawford cards. Like, once you have poured that kind of time and money into that collection, you are going to have an empty void in your life once it goes away.

D'oh, I may have shot myself in the foot. After the Clippers sat around all day yesterday, they were the first or second team taken in breaks today and I missed out. I guess I was trying to stop spending on group breaks for a few days anyway, so it all works out.

Holy crap, 70 Exquisite base and 8 of the 10 patches.
That's an old picture - he has half the base print run - including the jersey #d 006/199 which I wanted but it's in the proper collection! 09/10 Exquisite is the most limited NBA licensed Exquisite year as far as case production and is one of the most hoarded years - it's great to see he was able to get all those Crawfords!

He has an amazing collection - one of the best PC's I've ever seen! And yeah, he will list some with high BIN's - hoping to attract others with some to sell to him... And I have a feeling he would be happy if other Crawford collectors give up or get out of the hobby as he will continue to collect, and at lower prices!

And to the OP - there are several instances of this throughout the hobby and most end as expected! I saw it first with the Baseball collector who hoarded the first year Finest Refractors... Anyone remember djolley's 03/04 Exquisite TMac Base? They were selling for $300 each when he had over 100 of them - but he wasn't a true collector and as we all knew what was up - they crashed hard as he sold off... Same with the 03/04 Extra Exquisite Kobe's that were $2k a pop - now $200 that they are not truly hoarded by a collector... when the supply dries up for cards in demand - prices sometimes reach crazy levels - but true collectors don't care if they're not ever going to sell! ;)

I've met Mark a few times before. He says that he gets an unbelievable amount of people reaching out to him because of the cards he posts on eBay. He said he's been able to find great deals and once-in-a-lifetime cards solely because of the international reach of eBay.

I've been tempted to do this with my PC, but I can't roll with the big boys like Mark does.

Funny story: I once saw a vendor rip a Crawford relic card in half because Mark wouldn't pay him $5 for it.

Read the descriptions lol. If you have a Crawford patch to sell, most definitely list it on ebay in auction. I know Marc goes for ALL patches (sucks for set collectors). Scott doesn't really try to get them all like that but I think he bids a lot against Marc just out of spite.

I side pc Crawford and this nuttiness has made it impossible to get my hands on some of the final pieces to wrap up my pc of him.
I've had some back and forth with Mark talking scarcity etc and he seemed like a nice dude.
There are seven shorter prints that I would like to add to round out my collection and consider it 'complete', but these guys make it an absolutely impossible task.

Are you the one that their whole feud started over lol? I know Scott and Marc had agreed that Scott could get a certain card in auction, and the seller ended up selling the card to Marc and Scott got pretty pissed about it. That's when the major bidding wars started lol.

No, no, this was recently and I actually think it was a different person who just wanted to flip the card to either of them.
