View Full Version : Can we talk about some of the "underachievers" from the double rookie class?

So i was searching comc for some sets im working on, and looking at some of the prices, i got to thinking about some of the underachieving/overhyped players. What the hell happened to them, and what are they destined to be? Those were the two questions i was asking myself, figured maybe we could discuss them here if anybody was interested. Some players i thought should be on this list:
Underachievers/overhyped:
Alec burks
Marshon brooks (hurts me to put him on this list)
Perry jones
Terrence ross
Terrence jones
THOMAS ROBINSON
John henson
Derrick williams
Late adds to the list above:
Austin Rivers
Jeremy Lamb
Could be removed from this list at some point soon:
Brandon knight
Michael kidd-gilchrist
Has been removed from list:
Kenneth Faried
One of the things i would like to know, is who do you think has the best chance to get off this list, or shouldnt be on this list, and why.
For me, im inclined to believe a change of scenery would greatly benefit alec burks and brandon knight.
Please share your thoughts, i would love to have a lengthy conversation about this! :D

THomas Robinson was a number two pick, right? He has to be the biggest bust, no?

Trob was drafted fifth overall. I believe that he was just overhyped. Although i thought he might of had the potential to be a dennis rodman type player. Not in the defense, but in the sense that he was a great rebounder coming out of college. I thought that, combined with his hustle/heart he had the potential to be a great rebounder
I don't think Faried belongs on this list, he's done exactly what people were projecting him to - hustle, rebound, and bring energy. I guess you could say he hasn't developed since coming into the league but his career is doing much better than the majority of the others on that list.

Yeah, T-Rob was #5 in 2012. It was Derrick Williams who was #2 in 2011. As an Arizona fan it pains me to say he's one of the biggest draft busts in history. Crazy to think that Cleveland currently has 3 of the top 4 picks from that 2011 draft (Kyrie, Williams, and Tristan).
I think MKG could come off this list soon. He's working with Chris Matthews to fix/rebuild his shot. If he can do that he could be a very valuable wing for Charlotte or someone else.

I've always liked Brandon Knight's game a lot. It'd be nice to see him play for a contender. He's really streaky so I understand the narrow market for him but he still has a lot of value IMO. At one point, I had high hopes for him as a 2 or 3 scoring option somewhere but I think those days are probably behind him. I think he could be an Ian Clark or a Jrue Holiday type guy in the right system.

Brandon Knight is a decent player. He's got talent and has put up solid numbers. He's still fairly young and I think might have a good long career.

Faried definitely doesn't belong. He was the 22nd pick for crying out loud.
A couple guys that need to be added are Jeremy Lamb and Austin Rivers.

Is he? I always hoped that he would, thats why i put him on this list because of the broken jumpshot

MKG too. Really like him but he just never seems to get over that hump into the next tier. He definitely shows flashes sometimes though, where I'm like, "why aren't you doing THAT every game??" To me, he's probably the biggest head scratcher on your list OP. MKG should be an all star. Not sure what's keeping him from excelling at an efficient rate.

Yep, just started working with him like 2 weeks ago and his shot already looks better. Hopefully it's a permanent fix and not something where he'll abandon the change once he's in a game situation.

So i added faried, because after the olympics the tear he was there, people thought he was gonna be a 20+&10 guy. I heard alot of chatter anout that here, so i guess i put him because of being overhyped maybe? That was my reasoning.
For lamb, being a uconn fan i never really thought of him as anything more than a streaky scorer, but i can see where people would say underachiever.
Rivers- yep didnt think of him

I haven't looked at the numbers but I thought Rivers had a bit of a breakout this season. Am I way off?

A lot of injuries across this group. A little bit of good health and opportunity could launch a lot of these guys into success.

Well i thought so too, but it did take him quite a while to really sort of start to produce. I added him to the op for discussion purposes

For sure, i know we discussed burks earlier, and I do agree with you that i think a change of scenery would greatly benefit him

Man if he really took to heart the training he is doing... charlotte could be some team

This. Kemba Walker, Nic Batum, MKG, Marvin Williams... If these guys were all playing their best basketball and Charlotte surrounded them with some more depth, the Hornets would be a top 5 team in the East, potential top 3. I don't know what happened to Batum. He's another guy I feel like should be an all star but is just too inconsistent.

What about Nik Stauskas and Dante Exum? I legitimately thought Exum would be a star but he has underachieved so far.

He can still rebound. But he's a moron. Zero basketball IQ. Thinks he can shoot, dribble and pass.

I was like huh(found the article talking about it lol)? I thought he just rebuilt his jumpshot two seasons ago but he got hurt and Mark Price left to go to UNCC. I thought it had regressed a little bit this year so I guess it was back to the drawing board. At times he has been a complete liability on the offensive end.

Dion really had a great year, you really think he deserves to be on this list? Once miami started utilizing him correctly he really found his comfort zone and started playing well

You guys are right. Forget t-rob, replace him with derrick Williams. That guy just sucks.

Yes I do.
4th overall pick. Only been in the playoffs once, and that appearance had little to do with his contribution to the team. Sure, he's scored 15 a game twice in his career, but I'm glad I sold his Prizm RC auto during the 12/13 season instead of holding on to it.

He's more overhyped that anything. I think the injury hurt him, he's probably a rich man's Tony Allen.

Yeah he was probably overhyped a bit, at least his scoring ability, his ability to get to the basket. But he's a great defender that can get 8 boards per 36 from the SF position and never turns the ball over. Every team would love to have him. Don't think his offense is hopeless either, still very young.

Waiters had a surprisingly solid year, worked himself off any list
TRob and Dkwill are the two biggest disappointments by far, they likely are what they are at this point in their careers.
I stil have hope for BKnight, seems that Phx was a terrible situation for him with all the guards around, could be a solid 6th man in the right context IMHO
