Hey all,
Ugh... so mad today. Been PC'ing Sebastian Telfair for over ten years now. Have spent countless time and money gathering his cards from all over the world. Last night at midnight I catch the headline that he is busted with guns and drugs.
Has anyone else watched their PC go from worthless to even more worthless...
I've been looking for reasons to quit the hobby, and I think one just smacked me in the face...
So frustrated.

Unfortunate, but always a risk, unless you PC former (and now deceased) players...

I figured it was about him.
Bad situation, but one I'm sure he lives in daily.
Chooses to live in, excuse me.
I've always been a big fan of his, though.

No reason to quit. There's always other players and sets to put together. I've tried getting one of every card of a player (In football) and it's draining and not nearly as fun as just picking up cards of players and teams you like. At least you didnt collect someone like Robert Swift lol.

OP - very sorry to hear, I can only imagine the type of pain that something like this causes. I felt a vaguely similar level of betrayal from Derek Fisher with his recent overturned vehicle accident due to DUI, although I never spent excesses of time and money (only a relatively small amount) chasing his cards to build a collection.
I'm not sure if my ideas will be helpful or not, but here goes for a try (and please forgive what may be TONS of assumptions)! I'm not sure if you were building your Telfair PC with $ in mind, nor how you personally feel about the recent development. If the sight of those cards fills you with disgust, then I think it's time to at least put some distance between yourself and those cards for at least a little while. Since, as you stated, they are not likely to attract very much money on the market, I'd only recommend trying to sell them if somehow you come across somebody that is willing to pay relatively decent (key word is relatively) money for them. Assuming you ARE disgusted, and ARE NOT really not going to get too much for them, I'd recommend putting them away in a nicely protected box somewhere for future consideration. You may find, that after some time passes, that you have at least some curiosity or interest in looking at them down the road, and taking a nostalgic trip down memory lane for more reasons than just to think about Telfair himself. I've seen and heard too many stories about people that jumped the gun and made an emotional decision to "trash" things after something negative happens, only to see them later regret taking such drastic counter-measures (prime example is after a divorce, where all pictures containing the "other" are trashed, but then later, person realizes that most pictures of that timeframe got trashed and they can't untrash them now).
I would recommend doing a little bit of soul-searching to see if this hobby still has a purpose for you. Do you enjoy watching and following basketball? Do you enjoy the novelty of "collecting" in general? How much of your free time does it take up, and would you be happier finding something else in life to fill in that time with? Depending upon how you answer these questions, that I think will give you the answer as to whether or not you should leave the hobby. Perhaps you never thought of collecting other ways - building sets, collecting RCs, collecting autographs, or heck - even something as random as collecting some random cards/inserts/hits that visually appeal to you. I know that once upon a time and for myself, most of my collecting drive was to "build sets". It was just the way I imagined collecting to be done when I began, and didn't think too extensively about doing it a different way. Luckily for me, I did some thinking and talking with friends that convinced me to open up to other ways of collecting, which has really brought some life and meaning back to the hobby for me. Perhaps the same would be true for you if you stop exclusively chasing one single player, but find another way to stay engaged?
Now, for a quick question for you that might help you and another friend out. Do you happen to have a Fleer Showcase Telfair RC /199 that you'd like to part with? If yes, I have a set-building friend that will pay fairly for it - please let me know and I'll have him contact you directly via PM!
Best of luck to you with your upcoming decision, as I'm sure it won't be an easy one. Hopefully you'll do some thinking and come up with the choice that is most likely to bring you the most peace and happiness in life, since card collecting is supposed to be fun and shouldn't be continued if it loses the fun aspect!

I hated neo-nazi skinheads. Then I got to know a few of them, and I realized that they are human. These particular ones grew up poor, and unwanted. They just wanted to be accepted and belong somewhere. For their neighborhood, for these kids, that meant being skinheads. Is being a victim of your environment justifies racism? No. Does my values clash with theirs? Absolutely. What was gained from this experience however is that I was able to kill the hate that I have felt towards them.
Telfair was not born a criminal, he got that way. If you are willing to be bothered to learn more about him and what made him a criminal, maybe it will change your attitude towards him, or maybe not.

I PC Dijon Thompson from 05-06 played that one season a small bit & kind of went back n forth between D league and NBA then no on signed him last I heard he was playing over in another country playing in the euro league. He only had about 140ish cards which I only have about half of cause what I still need does not show up or its because there is a small amount that are all 1/1 printing plates.

Rock bottom for my guy (Humphries) was dating that Kardashian. There's even a card in one of those Ginter sets or something that featured a piece of their wedding invitation. Yes, I had to swallow my pride buying it...but I guess that's the rollercoaster that comes with being a PC collector for a player. You collect them for all the goods and the bads, I suppose.

No reason to quit.
There is when you admittedly say you've been looking for reasons to quit, lol.
Just quit OP. I used to root for Telfair too being from NYC and also a big Marbury fan, but if your mind doesn't immediately go from "damn that sucks" to "ok who else would I enjoy collecting", it's game over.

Rule #1 - It's always about the money.
Rule #2 - When someone says it isn't about the money, refer to Rule #1.
Collecting cards is just like spending money on anything else. Does it make sense? A person can only justify spending so much on cardboard pictures without it making financial sense.

Yeah I used to have a nice little collection of Telfair. Still have a few of his cards but sold off most all of the good stuff.
I think we all understand these guys in the NBA aren't saints. You're collecting based on what they do on the court, and hoping they just don't do anything too crazy off the court. For guys no longer in the league, I don't think it matters much though - actually some off the court antics can add to a guy's legend (Dennis Rodman comes to mind).

I remember reaching out to you privately a few years ago based solely on your location, and my time there in your town briefly. I also knew you collected Telfair, and I had a few nice pieces I wanted to donate to your collection. Basically pay it forward because so many people have helped me and my collections over the years of Dennis Rodman, Dajuan Wagner and especially Sasha Pavlovic.
You never bothered to even reply......
But to comment on your post, I have hit that wall with Sasha Pavlovic. There's literally nothing up online worth my time. He's not worth seller's time to list his higher end pieces. Every once in a while I will have someone hit me up trying to exploit me or "pull a Paul" with a Sasha card. I own so much of his rarer stuff, it's like I might add 5-7 cards a year now. Sad......

Former NBA guard Sebastian Telfair found guilty on firearm charge in New York (https://sports.yahoo.com/nba-sebastian-telfair-convicted-gun-charge-013007700.html)
Former NBA point guard Sebastian Telfair was found guilty on a firearm charge on Wednesday, and is facing up to 15 years in prison, according to TMZ.
Telfair, who was the No. 13 overall pick in the 2004 NBA draft, was arrested in Brooklyn, New York, in June 2017 after police pulled him over for driving without his headlights on. Police found multiple weapons, ammunition and marijuana in the car.
He pled not guilty to the charges in October, but was found guilty on Wednesday of felony criminal possession of a weapon, per the report. He is expected to be sentenced in June.
The 33-year-old was arrested on a gun charge in 2007, too, and was given three years of probation after pleading guilty.
He has reportedly had multiple legal issues since his playing career ended. According to TMZ, Telfair was sued in November by American Express over more than $40,000 worth of unpaid credit card debt, and had a restraining order placed against him in 2018 by his estranged wife and children after an incident where he allegedly smashed a car window outside of her house.
Telfair played for eight teams over 10 seasons in the league, including the Portland Trail Blazers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Phoenix Suns before his career ended in 2015. He averaged 7.4 points and 3.5 rebounds throughout his career.
