View Full Version : People playing games with your cards that are on consignment

I'll try to keep this short...
I have a bunch of stuff that's on consignment right now.
Because I'm a totally obsessive, I favorite all of the stuff that's up and check prices probably 2-3 time a day for the first few days and then even more obsessively towards the end. Yes, I'm a weirdo, but if you spend enough time here on the basketball boards, you likely already knew that.
My stuff has several days left. I checked this morning, and a particular card had been big up to over $50.... when I looked this morning, I noticed that it was now at $2. Uhhh, what?
So I look at the bid history, and sure enough, one bidder has placed bids TWICE, including one insane bid and retracted both bids.
Basically, this individual is CLEARLY making my card look manipulated, likely with the hopes of driving down the ending price.
I HATE the manipulation game. The shilling, reverse shilling, and constant game play. I hate it.
Just a friendly reminder that you can't always look at a bid history and assume what's actually happening.
End of rant. Thanks for listening.

Thankfully with several days left, you'll probably get enough real bidders involved.

No question.... but there are buyers who assume when they see the combination of 1) consignment and 2) bid retractions that staying away is smart because the seller is playing games.

Depending on the consignor, i wouldnt worry about it. if the cards are strong enough (knowing what you deal in, they are), the snipes have already been set

I had a curry sell during finals for 1300 and it went unpaid! One month later when the auction ended i got 800. I was pretty annoyed that it took them that long to have it run and end again.

Had a Duncan auto 9.5-10 sell for $1500 with PWCC to a 0 feedback foreign bidder who bid multiple minimal increment bids. Of course they didn't pay. I was aggravated. I thought, well it'll be re listed and go lower now because people will be turned off and think it's shilled.
The next time it did over $1800 to a good feedback person who paid.
I never try to make sense of auctions. It sucks I agree, try to forget about it or ask them to pull it and start over if they will.
Good luck.

Can I ask why people send cards their cards to consignment? I understand if you're sending tons of cards and are too lazy to list them... but if its just a few is it because they normally go higher on ebay with some of the cosignment sellers? This is an actual questions not trying to offend anyone.

Yeah average prices are higher with consignment and often times if the card is priced at a certain level then the fees will actually be lower with the consignment company than if you payed eBay yourself.

Call it lazy if you want but
Higher sales
Higher net
Oh and spend a little time in the member feedback section here and you'll see why some (me included) would just rather not deal with it

Listen to this piece of art. And enjoy.
The last remnants of a fun time in the hobby for me.

Haha. Thanks man. I can't tel you how much I appreciate that. It was so much fun. I did it weekly for almost a year.
Most are gone unfortunately. They were all on SoundCloud but SoundCloud required a $150 annual fee to keep it going. I had cut back to closer to once a month for the last 2-3 months and life just kept on getting busier.
Fortunately this place that I linked to above stole a few of my episodes. Haha.

I've been trying to find good content from like minded basketball card collectors for a while and this podcast is some of the best I've found.
I had a fantasy football podcast for about a year so I can sympathize with the lack of time to do them. They're loads of fun though.
Really enjoying yours. Good stuff.

I've just recently started sending things on consignment.
When I list cards at auction, I get very few views, and very low prices.
Guys like Prewar get so much more views and exposure for your cards.
It also takes the headache out of having to ship overseas.
