Hi all,
Please direct your attention to the following item -
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1997-Skybox-E-X2001-Jambalaya-Michael-Jordan-6-SGC-10-98-GEM-PWCC-/142537218335?hash=item212fe1591f:g:NsMAAOSwmuNZ39JF
When I first saw this was listed, I was excited to see what the final value would be. It's become increasingly difficult to know the true value of a high grade Jordan Jambalaya. I thought this was going to be a good data point.
But alas, I was just looking at it closer and and I' not sure that either the top or the bottom include the famous "jambalaya blip". What is the "jambalaya blip" you ask? Look at the top and bottom edges of the following -

The card should be perfectly cut along the entire card EXCEPT the top middle and bottom middle point. Jambalaya cards without a clear blip must be subject to the question - is this a bankruptcy sheet card?
Am I imagining things, or does this look like it's probably a KenCope sheet cut version?
Appreciate your opinions on this.

I don't see the chip on the top or bottom from the factory cut either, but I was wondering if it was due to the SGC case.
However, it does appear the card has some chipping on the back from rubbing against the case.
I don't understand why someone would grade that card with SGC.

My first piece of evidence frankly. I wonder if Beckett got wise after the first few batches that they graded of the sheet cut stuff.

I thought I saw the blip on the top, but I could be mistaken. It is not always perfectly clear it seems but there is a tad of irregularity at the top middle I believe but I am far from an expert.

Was looking at this listing the other day when the resident instagram Jordan hypeman, @90sbasketballcardstash, posted a screenshot.
Going off these pics I'm not seeing any notches but the top does seem to be an imperfect curve.
A lot of times I've noticed only the bottom end has a notch while the top is imperfect, but on this I'm only seeing the former. Amazing that there aren't clearer pictures provided.

The plastic point (or nipple if you will) does appear to be missing from this card. Think about this. When plastic is made, it's created often in "trees" (think those old plastic model card sets with plastic part trees). Because the top layer of a Jambalaya card is plastic, the corners are die cut and removed, when done by the factory. This causes the blip or nodule on the top/bottom of all pack pulled Jambalaya cards.
This in my opinion has been "Coped"......
Such an oddity for SGC to have graded that.....
But of course this one is sent to the big consigner.....and this auction is chock full of suspect bids and junk shillers. Surprise surprise...

Why does the top still have the imperfect curve, then?

Not sure if that's a notch on the bottom left of the card or if that's just excess chipping.

You get it. Good job.
The blip is in the EXACT SAME SPOT on all of these cards. So, for those of you wondering about other imperfections, that doesn't mean the card is legit. The blip should be in the VERY Center of the card. Top and bottom edge.

Agreed. SGC and no clear overlap are immediate red flags. I'm not an expert on shilling but wouldn't surprise me.

Right, but I'd say you'd still need a better photo to be conclusive about this case.
Sometimes the angle of the pic can mask the notch/blip/nipple and only makes apparent the imperfect curve, which can be seen clearly here on top on the front scan.
Now look at the back scan, that could be a notch on the bottom.
Not trying to make a case for or against, just saying these aren't the best images to go by.

And also, just to be clear, there have been kencoped versions that show imperfect curvature to top or bottom?
I thought every case of a kencut Jamba had perfectly round tops and bottoms.

My opinion.. that jambalaya penny looks like taiwan man... also u need to see the the year date they are graded “And” see the subsequent before and after graded jambalayas of the same player registered on the graded company on its serial number if its still the same player and inserts.. example u got a bgs graded jambalaya jordan with a serial #0008673900, u must check if the before graded serial numbers are also the same jambalaya example the #0008673895, #0008673896, #0008673897, #0008673898, #0008673899,
#0008673900(example ur own jambalaya) and then see the after graded if its still a jambalaya. Example.
#0008673901, #0008673902, #0008673903, #0008673904, #0008673905..
If before and after is flooded with the same jambalaya and player, its most likely to be the fake one’s made in taiwan.. better stay away.. in a mj page in fb. Someone i know told me to be safe is to buy a BGS jambalaya or PSA which is graded on the years 2000-2003 as they are not subsequently graded the same insert card(ex:jambalaya) 2008-2010 most likely are the years these taiwan made jambalayas got graded and passed from grading companies(that is what rumor has it)

That Jamba Penny is mine. Are we saying it's a fake? Sorry I'm new to the Jamba world [emoji55]

I don't think it's a sheet cut...
I have the set and have a few that don't have the notch...which I got before kencope.
It's possible someone has removed the notch, but it's also a possibility it simply didn't have it straight from the pack...
The dip at the top looks to be there, just smaller than what we are use to seeing...

Na he was just using those 3 links as examples of legit Jambos. So no worries friendo.
But honestly, the more I think about it, I'd go with this sgc MJ as being legit as well, for reasons I mention in my last 2 posts.

I remember you and others talking about the Hupe Royalty hilarity a couple years ago. Def possible, but then again there's prob so many other dudes that would have motivation to take that mantle since.

Could be a steal...you crack it and if it graded BGS 9.5 or PSA 10, it's worth over $10k and they seem to be still going up from the last REAL $13k private sale...
But who knows what it would grade...

it almost seems like its safer to try to cross grade it? its already a 10 here, not looking to sub bump?

If it's determined to be real and not sheet cut? Yep, this was a stellar buy.
If not.... then, in my opinion, no.
