My Jaylen Brown PC

There was a series of conversations about his game this week and it got me inspired to finally take some pictures and share my PC. He is a type of player that we haven't seen in Boston in a long time and there were a lot of releases (Prizm, Optic, Select, Revolution and TC) that I enjoyed the base and parallel cards from. So between enjoying his game and hitting a bunch of his cards I decided to start a rookie year PC. I won't be chasing his stuff much in 17-18 and beyond. I want to save up to buy one or two nice Tatum rookies and then go back to some set chasing.

The Impeccable looks better than I though. I didn't have high hopes for it. I bought it with eBay bucks. I will say the design is great. The photo really pops and the foiling is subtle but clean. It really shines in hand. The silver bar I could take it or leave it, but I felt like it will be one of those odd ball cards years from now.

I agree on the Absolute auto. On-card and /25. Very underrated set.

I am also glad I grabbed the big ones before prices jumped. I did just win a big one that I overpaid for. Hope it comes in soon. Thankfully I’m impulsive enough that I grabbed duplicates of some of my favorites. I don’t sell much but if prices remain up I’ll unload a few.

Nice grab on the Excalibur King! That stuff is selling lower than I would think. I grabbed my gold for $75. Just last week another gold copy sold at auction at $90. I haven’t followed any of the Base parallels or those diecut inserts.

Thanks! Not much left to get that fits my collecting style. I’d love a Donruss Next Day Auto and a Donruss Optic Preivew. I’m not into Immaculate this year and the only stuff I ever like from Flawless are the Base cards but those will be well beyond my price point.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Excalibur King /10 last week for $99, I looked for it before the Bucks game and the card was gone. Yesterday I checked again and the same seller relisted it for $49! Hit the BIN immediately. I scored bigtime. Now I just want a gold crusade and a Revolution auto, my rookie JB PC will be complete...all the other cards of his are too much money.

One of the only Jared Sullinger cards I still have is an auto that I bought from you when it came back with a grade less than you wanted. (Yes I remember this crap instead of using my brain for more productive stuff).

Hopefully my Brown PC doesn’t lose the value that my Sully PC did. I have a feeling Brown has a better chance of staying away from the buffett so I probably don’t have to worry.

Thanks man! I never knew that! I know what you mean about Sully, I remember spending $75 for the Gold Prizm when it first came out. Now I would be lucky to get $10-$15 for it. I have about 5 Brown Auto's in my PC, hopefully he will have a better career than Sully.

I need to sell a few cards to recoup the cost of this. I feel I overpayed by a lot, but it is only the second copy I have seen surface since the product was released and a raw copy sold over the summer for way more than I expected.

A minor update today, but it's the kid's birthday so I had to post something. I picked up the Rookie IV a while ago (it's in the Flickr Album) so I wanted to get all of them. Got this and it showed up in a recent COMC mailday. I love the design and photography. I do wish they would get rid of the CK brand and make them inserts in the Donruss brand. There are some real nice CK inserts, parallels and autos that would be great additions to the Donruss cases. As a set collector I don't think CK stands up on it's own.

Thanks man! I appreciate the feedback. I agree on Optic. It might be my favorite release since 12-13 Prizm. If I had the time I’d chase the Holo set. I was unsure about Revolution until I bought a box. I instantly feel in love with the design. I want to go after that base set for 16-17 soon.

Hey. Nice hit! If it’s a parallel of the base card I would think $50-75 would be market value on that. If it’s a parallel of the rookie Insert set I would think closer to $30.

Optic base parallels /25 are selling for $75-100 and the insert parallels /25 are selling for $40-50. An Excalibur Crusade Gold /10 just sold at auction for $90 with another selling as BIN a few weeks for $75.

I have a Galactic and would like to complete the rainbow so if you ever decide to move it keep me in mind! Congrats again on a nice hit. I bet that was a fun break!

Here's an addition that I am very excited about. Donruss Optic Preview! I personally think Panini hit a homerun with this insert. They had not announced that Optic was coming to basketball when Donruss was released. They just had these as an insert. I remember people assuming that they were testing it out with a planned Optic full release for 17-18. I very much appreciate that the photos are different than what was used in Donruss & Optic and that the card is labeled as a "preview". Even the back is different. I have been searching for this card for a long time and this is the first copy I have seen available.

SICK PU!!! Have yet to see a John Wall Optic Preview (I pic him) pop up. 16/17 Donruss sucked bigtime compared to 14/15 and 15/16 so I don't think much was busted. HUGELY under appreciated insert.
I think this is an insert could rival 90's inserts. How much did you pay for it?

Yeah, that was a chase card of mine for sure. It's been a long time since I have been so excited about a card. I was like a little kid waiting on the arrival. I wish eBay didn't send the email updates when something was delivered. I would have liked the surprise!

Oh damn! The copy that I have as a BGS 10 is one I hit myself and submitted. I almost sold it for $110 in February but it was in my COMC account and the shipment got delayed! I picked up the 9.5 as a backup copy for $64.99 in March!

I have no idea on the print run. I've never seen one. I've seen I think 4 Simmons, but some were graded and some weren't. Easily could have been a case where one was bought, submitted and then back on eBay. We will never know the print run. I think there is a lot of unopened Donruss sitting around. I busted a case and hit 3 previews (Durant, Kawhi, Rondo). Most people are finding one per case, with some finding none. The listings on eBay are minimal with almost no rookies. I paid $200. I had nothing to base the price on, but I wanted it!

16/17 Studio Sketch. This is a really nice card in-hand. All of the foil is a very clean platinum type of foil. For base cards Studio was a very underrated release IMO. The problem is a good base set doesn't carry any value though. I have no idea what a box of this stuff cost at release, but I bet it was way too high.

Not really, only if you want anything Prizm. I think that is all being stashed away. Which I'm fine with. I sold my BGS 10 Silver today and got enough to make a car payment! I still have the BGS 9.5 that I got back in the day for $65.

A lot of the other stuff is popping up. I also have most of the "big" cards that I would want in my collection. The only one I'm really wanting is a Next Day Auto and I missed out on only the second one I've ever seen. Must have gone real fast at BIN the other day. Other than that I'm more interested in some of the obscure inserts and nicer base cards now. I would also like one of those NOIR metal framed cards, but they are /25 and tough finds. I think were the real hype will be seen is when Flawless comes out. I have a feeling his base RC will be out of my league by a long shot. Which is too bad, I generally like those cards.

I do think people are stashing a lot of Immaculate and Noir stuff right now, maybe even some Gold Standard (though I'm not sure how much was opened). There has been very little of those three releases available for Brown recently.

EDIT: After I thought a little more about your original question. It is as easy if not easier to find his stuff on eBay right now. It is much harder to find stuff on COMC or the B/S/T section of BO these days. Last season this time up through April COMC was getting updated regularly and any post I made on BO was answered with several options. With 20/20 hidsight vision I should have grabbed all those $40 silver Prizms when I had a chance!

A couple of lesser value cards, but two of my favorites. I love Prizm and I think the Donruss "laser" parallels are beautiful in hand. Overall I think Panini does a great job with some of their Donruss and Hoops parallels. Some real nice designs there over the years.

The Prizm RC I've had for a while but I couldn't find where I put it. I was checking the eBay delivery confirmation today on this one and realize it was delivered two days before my daughters 1st birthday which meant it likely got wrapped up in the house cleaning. I spent two hours searching for it and finally found it in a random storage tin in the office.

Yes the laser parallels are underrated/ under appreciated. It's the one thing Panini got right with 16/17 Donruss. Still wonder why they dropped Rated Rookie logo from Donruss last year...it's an iconic logo for rookies. I believe it was on Black Gold product...why?

Thanks. Yeah I love the Noir. I pulled s Scottie Pippen from that set in the sole box of Noir I opened. They are very impressive cards in person. I definetly overpaid but I sold one of my Silver Prizms for a big profit so I was able to splurge. It’ll be interesting to see how Beckett grades it.

For the first time in 5 years, I did not buy a box of Hoops. I decided to use the money I would have spent on it and only pick up singles. This was the first one I chose! Great choice for the start of the 17-18 season. I impulsively scooped this up the instant I saw it. Best buck-fifty spent in a long time. Gorgeous card in hand. I haven’t checked the checklist but I bet it’s a cool set to chase.

Then this happened! I was planning on avoiding these. I personally don't like this year's design. I think the foil around the diamond is hideous. Looks like an ink blot test! However, given that he has no real cards in Immaculate and this is his only card in Flawless I bought in. Secretly I think this could be one of the few cards that makes money if he continues to grow as a player given his lack of autos.

The last "live" autos were NT. All of his Noir and Grand Reserve stuff are redemptions that haven't been fulfilled at all. He has no auto's on the checklist for Immaculate or Flawless.

Others have posted that he was holding out looking for a new contract with Panini. Wanting to be paid at the veteran level and not the rookie pay scale level. I can't verify that, but I can confirm that his autos have been much more limited than other rookies.

Thanks Zodiac. I won’t slab them all, but I will slab some. I have 3 out at BGS now. I don’t care about a grade for my PC, but I like the protection of a BGS slab. I also like graded cards as it’s easier to sell them when the time comes. Theoretically I’d like to slab everything. I know if I sent out all the Optic stuff I have I could possible land some PSA 10s which would be great for moving duplicates. I might end up doing that, but it’s so expensive!

This one I'm extremely excited about. I never buy cards outside of my PC focus, but I think Ingram is legit. This was my chance to get a rookie year auto of his. IMO this is a dual of the two best RCs from that class who were able to sign for Panini. I also think it is a stunning card. I was hoping the surface was acetate, but that is not the case.

Thanks bud. Yeah normally I would have picked up a card like this on COMC and maybe submitted it through them to BGS. The COMC prices on this one are stupid though. I have a couple cards at PSA now and a few coming back from BGS as we speak. It will be a while before I submit anymore.

Yeah, I put an offer in that was significantly higher but I thought still likely to get beat. It sold for less than his Silver Prizm with the same grade was selling for!

Yeah. I felt like it was a steal as well. In the end I believe auction prices set the market value. I do wonder if it was a perfect storm for a steal though. It ended at an odd time, it was at the start of the holiday season, it was at the prime hype period for a new product release (17/18 Prizm) & it was the teammate of a rookie who was hitting a peak in their early season value.

As for Tatum keep an eye on his stuff. It’s likely that he will hit a wall and his prices will drop during the mid-season lull. There aren’t many releases out in that timeframe but I suspect his prices will drop a bit over the next 4-8 weeks.

These next three I've already shown in this thread, but I recently got them back from BGS. I was really hoping for a Black label on the Studio. It would have looked amazing. I'm real happy with the Optic Preview given the centering conditions of those cards. I am a bit shocked at the corner issue on the Revolution auto. I did not pick up on that when I submitted. Regardless I grade more for protection than the grade so I would have submitted it regardless.

This is the Orange /199. I know I have the Green /5, Gold /10, base, silver, purple, white sparkle and checkerboard. I have the Blue (/99?) in my COMC cart. I know there is a red (/49?) and a 1/1. If I am only missing the red (not counting the 1/1) I will have to grab it and complete the rainbow.

Edit: I just checked Beckett. There are a lot more parallels than I remembered. Two 1/1s (black and gold vinyl) there two /25s (pink and aqua). Also, the blue that I have is actually /49, while the red is /99. For me personally I'd rather the Revolution Futura /25 than either of the optic ones. I could go to eBay and grab a Red and Aqua right now to be only the Pink away from the rainbow but not worth it to me.

Thanks bud. I’ll keep an eye out for reasonably priced Optics. If I can land them I will. There are 4 Aquas /25 on eBay right now and all of them are way overpriced and the sellers aren’t moving. No Pinks available. One Red that is slightly overpriced.

Nice! I love Revolution. I’m still chasing the set from last year. How do they look in hand? 15-16 & 16-17 were busy but clean if that makes sense. 17-18 looks VERY busy based on the online images.

Yeah, I bought my copy raw and had it grade. Overall BGS 9. All subs 9.5 or 10 with the exception of an 8.5 on centering.

When listening to Jaylen speak you can tell that he is quite articulate and level headed for such a young guy. Some of the stuff he says I don’t agree with but I appreciate that he wants to dig deeper into topics he values. Dude is smart: Arabic alphabet, good lord it looks like a bunch of scribbles. I can barely speak English! They say during his rookie year he never made the same mistake twice. He has a bright future during and after BB.

For sure. I remember a few pros last year commenting that they felt he would be head of the union someday. I found this real telling of the respect others had for his intellect and personality.

Refreshing is a good word. I hope he becomes a star in this league and uses that platform appropriately to share his perspectives. When done appropriately it can be extremely powerful.

I'm not a huge fan of sticker autos, but I am a huge fan of Optic and shiny cards. There is so much surface area on this card that is refracting it really pops!

I agree. For my PC aesthetically pleasing cards are the most desirable. That include designs and parallels that make the player pic pop. I do like that Panini tends to have /5 parallels as green. The golds, greens and blacks all look great with Celtics players.

Thanks bud. I actually did set aside a group of cards to send off for grading today. This didn’t make the cut. I go back and forth on grading. I want to grade all PC cards for protection and future sell value. The cost is so high though and I know many of these cards will never move once I acquire them that I keep it to just the cards worth $100 or more.

Do you plan on collecting Jaylen throughout his whole career or just focus on certain things?

I ask because I used to PC a guy and try to collect everything in the world. After a 20 year career it go too much and I wound up with a ton of random stuff.

Now with the new guy I started to PC I am mainly trying to stay with high grade rookie year stuff and hesitant to venture into second year stuff for fear that I'll go back to trying to collect everything.

It’s 10/10. I love it. If it wasn’t a green parallel I would have gone for the base. However being the C’s green and then adding in a factory encased aspect I jumped on it. The photograph is stunning.

Yeah, I saw that Optic Gold. I'm so glad Optic was sticker auto last year. It has saved me a lot of money! 2 months ago your $200 probably would have been in the ball park. His play in the playoffs along with the 2017-18 Optic release made it the right time to sell that auto. The seller was smart.

Great card! I think I saw that one, but never made a move on it. I don't know if you'll ever see a Grand Reserve auto. He has unfulfilled redemptions from Grand Reserve, Spectra, Noir and perhaps others. He also had only dual autos in Immaculate (those that get sent out early in the year in order to get both autos) and no autos in Flawless. It's been rumored that mid-way through last year he stopped signing and won't sign again unless he gets a higher paying deal with Panini. I haven't even tried to land any of the redemptions that are out there.

Here is a thread with someone noting they had heard that Brown wasn't signing. This was brought up at the time of the 16-17 Immaculate release. He doesn't have any on-card autos for 17-18 and only a handful of sticker autos. Likely sheets left over from when he did an early season signing last year.

This is an /10 parallel to this insert. I am beyond disappointed. The base insert has the same prizmy background with the standard photo of the player. This set really pops. I highly recommend people check to see if their PC player is in the set. That being said I was hoping for something more from an /10 parallel. Maybe a gold foil for the background. Nope! It is the identical card with a serial number printed on it. Go figure.

One of my favorite recent pickups. Price was cheap enough and it is just an odd card. If you can't read the label it is a European Edition Panini Stickers RC. I really don't know anything about it.

Thanks. I started collecting him very early in his Celtics career. I was looking for one player to PC and really like the intelligence, maturity and athleticism I saw from him in his first summer league. I got he vast majority of the rookie year cards last year. I wish a Prizm Gold RC would pop up for auction so I could gauge what mine is worth.

It's an Optic heavy update this time. I'll start off with the three non-Optic cards.

The patch /25 belonged to someone on FB that I bought another card off of. I didn't realize they also have an /10 version which is gold and looks much nicer. I also had a few beers that night so with all that being said I definitely overpaid for it, but the seller was nice enough to include the base version for free!

Now some Optic. I believe it is a Fast Break Purple? (Too many parallels!) & a retail Aqua /25. The Aqua I won for only a couple of bucks on auction. I was pumped.

And the big one. As I've said a million times I love a parallel color that matches a team color. There are many teams who pop with the inexpensive red or blue parallels, but in Boston it is the Green /5 for us. A huge thanks to Yaz1966 who saw this on FB and went out of his way to message me and get me hooked up with the seller. Unfortunately, I did not photograph this one well. I couldn't get the right angle for the shine without the glare.

Yeah, the green always pops. My favorites were the green parallels in 2012-13 Totally Certified.

The binder is super cool. Holds 200 cards no problem. I had to take some out of mags and the 130 pt tops are a little tight. Other than that, 2 thumbs up.

Yeah, Galactics are amazing. I got mine at the right time. Recent raw copies have gone for less than I paid for a BGS 9.5. Keep plugging along. You’ll get the ones you want.
