Prizm Question

Sorry, I'm not familiar with all the Prizm and Select products. I know Prizm is more valuable than Select. Which color has the higher value in Prizm? Also, what is the general reception about auto prizm? Thanks

Silver prizms (just a regular refractor), gold, and 1/1 black seem to be the most consistently in demand. My opinion is that it's because people know what to expect of those cards from year to year. The autos aren't really the main attraction in Prizm. Part of that might be because they're mostly/all(?) sticker autos after the initial release in 12-13.

All of this is with the caveat that Prizm and Prizm silver rookie stuff is really hot right now. And it's hard to know if that's the new standard or if it's a trend that will fade.

There's a much longer response to your post (which I'll try to put together later if others haven't already chimed in), but to hit a few high points:

"Colors with the highest value" - A good rule of thumb is to stick with the base, silver, and golds in each release. There are always one off exceptions to the rule (depending on how many dozen parallels Panini decides to dump every year), but for the most part, the "Big 3" carry the day.

"General reception about Prizm autos" - Less desirable than the non-auto versions, as they have been stickers up to this point. However, if Panini shifts to on-card signatures, that could change very quickly.

Simple supply and demand. Many more collectors desire the silver so that drives up prices. Some colored version will be semi-desirable (I.e. Green Prizms for Celtics fans). Most collectors though who want Prizm want a silver for their PC. The colored are seen as a gimmicky and less attractive. There are also so many colored Prizms with some being SP, some being /199 and some being nonnumbered that there is no focus to them. Takes away from the collectibility. Whereas in 2012-13 they had silver, green (retail only), and gold. The greens that year command as much if not more of a premium than the silvers. Select has the tie-dye refractors /25 that are specific to Select so those command a premium. Everything else is just lost in the shuffle.

Silver has been the most consistent parallel since Prizm's first release, and also is reminiscent with collectors of the old-school refactors from the 90s. It's just seen as the most desirable, truest refractor of a rookie.

Also, like others have mentioned, there are enough of them out there so that they can build a following but not too many of them where supply outpaces demand.

Imo silver prizm is shinny and the color is close to base rc. I think someone in here calculated the print run of the silver prizm from the last few years and the print run of 12-13 silver prizm is around 175 anf the others are around 400 or more. Unless you are buying a superstar prizm rcs which is numbered to 100 or more. The silver prizm usually outsells the color refractor.

Coming from MLB and the Rookie world of collecting, whenever I buy NBA, it’s always Prizm and my hunt is mainly the base and silver of the top 5 desirable players of that year.

For NFL the go to product for rookies is Contenders.

Just my opinion, others may disagree.
