and double yep. Ben is getting fired no matter what happens now, I am sure he knows this. If he hasn't completely lost his team, benching a two-time super bowl MVP QB will lose the rest. I wonder what this means for Eli in his off season. This is a complete disservice to end Eli's streak for a coaching decision rather than injury.

McAdoo has got to go, I hope Eli leaves after this season he doesn't deserve this garbage. All 3 of his main receivers went down with injuries and Reese never addressed the problem of the offensive line, but yes let's put the blame on Eli.

Eli ain't that good, either. He shouldn't be benched, considering he hasn't had much to work with, but even with Beckham, Jr., he could be only so good. Those Super Bowl MVP years are long gone.

I mean I don't get it. OK, lets say Eli was playing absolutely horrible (which he wasn't).

A. The season is over, so putting in the backup for a "spark" does you no good.
B. Geno isn't a rookie/second year guy that needs evaluating to see if he is the QB of the future. Plenty of tape on Geno and we kind of know what he is now.
C. Are they preventing injury for a proposed trade?

Eli has two years left on his deal, no more guaranteed money after this year. His cap number next year is 22 million. They could cut him and be on the books for around 12.4 next year and save almost 10. If the idea is to cut him, you might as well play him.

I'd start Phil Simms again before ever allowing Geno to play. Geno may be the worst QB I've ever seen in my life. I thought he was only the roster because he made the minimum and was Odells off season buddy. My interest in football has been waning of late but watching this dumpster fire of a QB play Sunday literally made my season. Only thing I'd want to see more is Roger Goodell drowning in the Gowanus Canal.

Agreed.

It’s not his fault McAdoo sucks as an HC, his top 3 WRs went down with injuries and his OL is mediocre/just plain bad.

Hope he goes to a new team next year that’ll appreciate him like Cincinnati, Jacksonville, Buffalo or someone like that. It’d be funny if he pulled a McNabb and went to a division rival in Washington (if Cousins leaves). Just anywhere but Cleveland.

I'm wondering if this was a McAdoo decision or not. I don't think it's performance based for them to bench Eli. It is more about figuring out what they have in Geno and, more importantly, Davis Webb. Seems like that type of decision might have come down from Jerry Reese, the GM, who is also probably trying to save his job.

They're going to have a top 5 draft pick, they need to know whether to spend it on a QB (hint: YESSSS).

The problem is, as I understand, they have 1 more year of Eli's contract where the dead money on the cap is like $20M which makes it unrealistic to cut him. A trade would be possible if they had a team interested in picking up the deal, which the Jags might in the offseason. I wouldn't expect much trade value though, it's really more about getting his contract off the books.

Eli is the man no matter how average people think he is compared to his brother

“Coach McAdoo told me I could continue to start while Geno and Davis (Webb) are given an opportunity to play. My feeling is that if you are going to play the other guys, play them,” Manning said. “Starting just to keep the streak going and knowing you won’t finish the game and have a chance to win it is pointless to me, and it tarnishes the streak. Like I always have, I will be ready to play if and when I am needed. I will help Geno and Davis prepare to play as well as they possibly can.”

Big ups to Eli. I'm not sure that 90% of all starting QB's in the league would be as supportive. Starting QB's tend to be a finicky sort.

This coach is making the Ray Handley fiasco look like a picnic lol. I’m not a big Eli fan but gave appreciated what he’s done for the team. Saying that, you don’t treat him like this. Of course Eli is the professional and adult in the room. Giants should release/cut him n let him finish out his career with whomever he wants. This is embarrassing.

Agreed this sounds more like Reese trying to save his job, but McAdoo is complicit as well. Last ditch gamble that if Geno has a good game they may be able to spin this dumpster fire as Eli's fault. Pure disrespect and cowardice added to football incompetence for both coach and GM. I could deal with 2-14, but disrespecting your franchise QB for an never-was or a multi-year project rookie is BS.

While I thought the move not to fire McAdoo midseason was classy at first, I would love to see both Reese and McAdoo dismissed before Sunday. It would send a message of how the organization treats its veterans.

Eli was bad this year, in fact he was never great save for his two playoff runs. But he won 2 SBs, was the face of the franchise, and a good teammate by all accounts. Move on from him at year end if you like...that's football. But tarnishing the end of the tenure of your iconic QB by allowing your lame duck failures at GM and coach try to mask their failure is unacceptable.

Would love to see Coughlin snag him in Jax with a healthy receiver corps and that D. I'm willing to root for the Giants through any level of ineptitude, but am done watching as long as either McAdoo or Reese are there.

Well said. As a Dallas fan I've never been a fan of Eli, but respect him for his 2 Super Bowls, durability, and the great battles he's had with the Cowboys over the years. To be benched for Geno Smith is absolutely disgraceful.

As a long time Giants fan I think this is the right thing to do. The season is already shot and what can it hurt to test out your other options? Atleast geno can scramble and won't stand like a statue when defenders are rushing him. It's def the end of the Eli era, I say shop him and move on along with a complete overhaul of the staff including Reese who should have been fired along with coughlin!

It's not the classiest move but it's time 2 move on and rebuild with Reese being fired first for not focusing on the biggest need with the O line. Eli will most likely retire because he is a humble gut who will want to retire a giant, but if they can get a draft pick for him why not get it and let him choose his own fate in the nfl

The more I think about this, the more upset I am getting. I know I kind of defended it but now I'm flip flopping:

McAdoo needs to go. He should have been fired mid-season. You've got Spags who has been a HC before. Just make him the interim to get through the season.

No reason to replace Eli right now. If Davis Webb was the long-term answer, even as a rookie he would have been able to beat our Gino F-ing Smith as the backup.

Face it Giants, you are drafting a QB in the top 5 next year. What could Geno or Webb possibly do in the next few games, with a crappy O-Line and no receivers, to change that?

This feels like Coughlin all over again. Eli hasn't played great but he hasn't been terrible, the Giants have been terrible. Kind of exactly like Coughlin the year they fired him. Common theme? GM Jerry Reese is the teflon Don in both these situations. When will he have to answer for his crappy drafts and consistently awful o-line? He used to find gems like Ahmad Bradshaw & Osi Umenyora. Now he drafts "gems" like Jerell Adams in the 6th, guy has a decent rookie year, and we draft a TE in the 1st round the following year. You can't build a good team in round 1. Good teams find solid starters in rounds 3, 4, and 5.

Completely agree,Corbin. This is a classless move by ownership, the GM ,and that moron who calls himself a head coach. This is not how you treat the face of your franchise, and to replace him with Geno Smith is just a final punch in the gut. Eli belongs in Jacksonville with Tom Coughlin. He would be a huge upgrade over Bortles.

Here is where "evaluating personnel" falls apart and is complete BS. How does one accurately evaluate a developmental or journeyman QB by putting them behind a bad OL with literally no competent receivers sans Shepard if he is healthy? Maybe Webb has something...let's set him up for certain failure!

I literally fail to believe ownership had a big say in this outside of they may not have done the right thing and blocked the benching/fired McAdoo. I get angry the more I think about the situation. Incompetent two-year HC gets a stay of execution until the end of the season only to turn around and deny the same to the competent 14 year vet QB? Pretty sure that is the opposite of leadership.

Pretty confident McAdoo will never see a head coaching gig again as that mustache is probably disqualifying for Pop Warner.

Coughlin quit.

Right thing to do is finish out the season with the starting QB and assess what to do next in the offseason. Geno Smith isn’t even an option, so why start him at all? The Giants don’t want Manning hurt for a possible trade and they aren’t putting Webb out there in meaningless games. The Giants season has been amateur hour, so why end it any other way?

Wanted him in Jacksonville so bad before the deadline, but they wouldn't move him. Makes absolutely no sense! Not for trade, to bench in 26 days? I know its a lost season, but its not like there was any hope of them turning it around 3 games ago. Well ill settle for a playoff game or 2 this year, then Eli can come in next year with a healthy Robinson, Hurns, Westbrook, and Cole and make a real run.

I'm glad he got benched.....karma for the classless moves made by him and his daddy prior to the 2004 draft. People are going on here about how classy this jerk is remember this is the guy who was to good for the NFL process and threatened to reenter the draft if he did not go to the team he and his daddy wanted him to get too.....

Give me a break, at least you ended up with a great quarterback! If I remember correctly, they did that because of the Chargers playing lowball. How long was it before Rivers got a fair offer? If I remember correctly, it was almost the regular season.

Ya i just read dozens of them....

Team is so bad including Eli this year...

But 14 years never missed a game... 2 super bowls

Let him finish year and then part ways....

I wouldn't say that. He still has a respectable 62.5 completion percentage, a 2-1 TD/INT ratio. His interception percentage is the lowest of his entire career. All this while his top 3 receivers have played a total of 4 (Beckham), 5 (Marshall) and 7 (Shepard) games

I'd imagine riding anyone's back is quite painful at first :)!

unless your Brandin Cooks riding on Gronks back on Sunday vs the dolphins.

That was awesome!

Ending up with a good QB has nothing to do with the classless way the Mannings ran roughshod over the league and the fans of San Diego. Obviously you know nothing of how the Manning family threatened the Chargers PRIOR to the draft or you would know that the whole thing reeked of entitlement from both Eli and Archie with their threats of re entering if drafted by the Chargers.

But ok I'll give you a break since you know nothing of what transpired leading up to the 2004 draft. So try to give me a break because I believe in the draft process of the NFL and I think players like Manning and Elway who try to dictate terms coming out of college like entitled jerks should have some humble pie or KARMA every once in awhile.

I mean, veterans get to pick which teams they sign with. Every once in a while a rookie will pull something like Manning.

Cleveland has started 24 different QB's since Manning's streak started. If I'm Josh Rosen I'm probably telling my agent to make sure I don't go to Cleveland.

At the end of the day, Manning is responsible for his career. If he didn't want to play in SD, why should he have to?

Being a FA isn't the same as a college player declaring themselves draft eligible

It shouldn't work that way is the point he's making. I get why Manning and Elway along with Bo Jackson etc chose to avoid certain teams but I don't necessarily want to agree that it's "right"

And we very well could have another "issue" this year if Rosen or Darnold and their families don't trust the Browns ownership like the players I mentioned above. Luckily there are at least 5-7 teams at the top of the draft (so far) that want a "franchise QB"

NY again will be one of them along with Elways Broncos so the Browns could get a haul from at least 2 desperate markets

Eli is bad but Geno Smith. I would have tried Davis Webb. Geno has had plenty of chances. :o:o

Well start buying some Geno autos where you will have something to stay warm with this winter. I thought you were a Blowout member not a New York Giants Scout especially when Davis has never played a NFL game. Your next post be sure to list all of Geno's accomplishments in the NFL. That won't take up much space.

Right again Geno sucks. Next.

"Right" is subjective I guess. Based on the NFL not having guaranteed contracts and based on how some ownership (esp. San Diego in the late 90s/early 2000s) runs their teams, I don't really fault any player for choosing what team they play for. They may lose money doing that so there is a risk for the player. That's why not every player does it.
