View Full Version : Optic or Prizm for your FB RCs

Base and non auto parallels. With the death of Chrome everyone assumed that FB would follow basketball and the top FB rc for non autoed stuff would be Prizm. It seems to me like it may be Optic though. I prefer the looks of it, like Chrome it mirrors the base Donruss set, and in my opinion they are better looking cards. What is the board consensus?

Prizm sells for more than double in Carson Wentz’s case.

Prizm, Prizm, Prizm! In fact, there's a guy on here claiming to be the Prizm king. Prizm is loaded this year. Optic is good, but concerning base and parallel cards only, it's Prizm hands-down!

I think Optic is the "Chrome" replacement like you said. It is the product that has a product to parallel (Donruss). I like the design of Donruss this year so Optic should be pretty nice. I like Prizm to but I don't think it's a Chrome replacement. It has been around for a while and has always been below stuff like Topps Chrome. Basically I consider a replacement for Platinum or Finest or along those lines.

Prizm for me. Optic does parallel the Donruss set as noted, but that had little to nothing to do with the desire of Chrome. In fact, Chrome was not popular at all the first 10 years...because it was parallel.

The Auto's is where Chrome became popular correct? Unfortunately that is what favors Optic....on card auto's.

That would be correct. Although I imagine the addition of the red refractor and making refractors more common in general helped. Hard to underestimate the desire in the red refractors (/25). They can go for 10x what a Finest refractor /25 will go for.
I imagine its biggest draw was that it was a low priced product that had the potential of pulling the most desired card of a rookie. (Note the use of desired, over most valuable). The product itself, despite how we want to remake it, was a terrible break. The big hit in most $800 cases was a $10 card, and despite breaking cases every year, I never had a hit worth more then $20. I don't think I am alone there. You basically had to flip all the cards the first week to do well. This of course is standard with most low end products, but it seems so many have forgotten what opening the product was like, or perhaps just lack experience with it.
Optic, which lacks a history to compare well, has so far, been priced out of the low priced product category, and loses the appeal chrome had as such, or at least to me. With all the rc injuries, perhaps this year will be different, but for example, last year the boxes were in the $200 range. Now last year, with the hot Dallas rcs, is likely a fluke year, but its all we have for comparisons.

Prizm for base, Optic for autographs. See it this way for the immediate, but optic could take over in a few years if they do it right. Prizm also has the advantage of coming out early when there are very few decent products. Optic comes out closer to Contenders NT.

Correct me if I’m wrong but all prizm base for Wentz/Goff are “silver”/refractors right? I find this to be super lame

Prizm has been used for several of the football registry sets.

I would choose optic over Prizm for the reason of on card autographs, but the fact that the photos they choose are those hilariously awful dance bot shots, ruin the entire product. It makes it horrendous.
Prizm has looked great, but stickers are stickers.

Optic for on card autographs.
No worrying about players getting all of their signature on the sticker. No worrying about Panini putting the sticker on the card upside down. No worrying about the wrong sticker being put on the wrong card.
Still gotta worry about autopen though!

We need to keep in mind that the op said "base and non-auto parallels." In this case, it's Prizm and it ain't even a question.

I like Prizm base & parallel's but I also like Donruss this year. I think Optic should look nice "chromed/refractored".
This is the original OP.

It seems he mentions paralleling Donruss as a point he likes. Which is what Topps Chrome did and Prizm has never done. That is my only point. Prizm has been around for a while in FB and wasn't really a key product until Chrome went away. Before it was more along the lines of secondary product like Finest & Platinum. I do like Prizm base but Optic literally came out from Panini to replace Topps & Chrome in the exact same format the year there wouldn't be any Chrome.

My thoughts....or along the lines of....
Topps/Topps Chrome>Donruss/Optic
Platinum>Select
Finest>Spectra
Bowman Chrome NFL Uni>Prizm

Base and non auto? Prizm by a mile. To me, Optic's goofy poses kills it for me.
Pull up Joey Bosa Optic versus Joey Bosa Prizm and tell me which one any self respecting collector would rather own.

I think the debate would end if Panini actually did this.....& not just for special editions!

1,000,0000% on this........
Hey Panini: If you are stalking this board, with optic: use action/game shots on the rookies with on-card autos's and you will have a HUGE winner.
It's not hard.

Take a look at the Watson pics for Prizm & Donruss. The Rookies set in Donruss should look great and the Rookie Phenom also. The Elite Series stuff chromed.

I don't particularly find this a great photo over the Donruss photo. Especially when you consider Optic with the refractor coating and on card auto.

Yeah, the plain green background looks like a studio shot.
