Big arm in KC vs. Noodle arm in DC. Not quite the Thrilla in Manilla but who you got? Up to you what you think the better year is. Playoffs or stats or both. If Mahomes gets as far as Smith did in KC in the playoffs but doesn’t advance, is he better. If Smith takes the Redskins to the playoffs throwing to nobody’s again, is he better. If they both miss the playoffs, maybe stats settle it. Who has the better talent around him too may come into play.

I didn't see this option listed though

We can easily just say TOM BRADY :)

I like how they kept the This thread sucks in my thread (I approve and enjoy it) and deleted it from poor Leon's thread :)

Judging by the pay scale, I think alex smith is going to have a much better year. Of course, money can’t buy happiness, but it can buy a lot of other things.

Well Cousins was affected by this so should have been an option:flex:

*a rumor is floating the Skins have or are debating Franchise Tagging him to try and get some value back from him?

Well make the thread with the 3rd option :). Lazy people everywhere on BO. They can tag Cousins but he doesn’t have to sign. The redskins have no leverage and will get nothing for him.

They tag him, he doesn't sign, he loses around $30 million, and can't play for anyone else. With Smith off the board, Cousins is likely the best fa qb...not bad for leverage.

He signs and gets $34.5 million and kills their cap. Will a team trade for him not knowing if he’ll sign a long term deal?

Most trades are made without such team knowing if the player will sign, which is almost never a problem. That's just part of playing professional sports, what you agree to when entering the draft.

Mind you, tagging him makes it harder on a prospect team (they would likely have to match that 34 mil...a long term contract could lower that quite a bit), so that would be my last option, but yeah, if I am GM, I do that before I let him just walk. And yes, the salary would hurt, but they could (or would have to) restructure contracts, like Smith's to be back heavy.

This is of course more a fallout of their desire not to commit to Cousins for several years, but this fallout happens regardless. (If they don't desire letting him walk.)

Washington, by playing its hand early with Smith, ensured they got one of the better possible choices. However, it would have been strategically best to privately back burner the deal for a bit. Make other teams think most pieces are on the board. By making the trade known so fast, they were advertising that Cousins was available. And it has worked from what we have seen...which is just player talk right now, but there is clear interest.
