View Full Version : And this is why I never sell here and I'm thinking of getting out of cards

I posted a Brady Chrome BGS 9 here on Saturday for $700. A guy offered me $650 and I declined. I also said "don't worry, if they lose tomorrow I'm sure they will be all over ebay at that price." He responded back with how about $675? I had my eye on a couple cards so said why not and sold it. Shipped it Monday and he got it on Friday. Of course he filed a dispute today saying not as described because the prices on them went down this week.
I am so pissed off right now. I can't stand people whose word is worthless.

Look at the bright side. It should go up in value again and you can make more money.

This was my first thought. What is not described? Normally, graded cards help prevent this type of stuff. You know exactly what you're getting. I'm curious to know what he says is "not as described."

The worst part is that I even said he would be able to get it cheaper on Monday if the Patriots lost. He also said he only had $650 in his Paypal account. When I turned down that offer he came back with $675. I should have known his character then.

you can buy stuff for tiny fractions online of what you could at shows before the internet.... the internet is a great thing but with it and online shopping comes this garbage

Price: $9350
Buyer received card, messaged me saying they received it and wanted me to create a thread so we could exchange feedback and also asked me if I had any other 8.5's for sale. A few days later I received a PM asking about the edges and why they received a 7.5 from BGS.. A few days after that I received an email from PayPal that a "not as described claim was opened. I fought it and obviously lost. Only reason I sold the card was to help raise funds for a down payment on a home.. buyer was even aware of that.. put me in a tough spot for sure.

I have a similar story but it was on an ungraded card, so I didn't have a chance with paypal. It was in 2014 when Seattle beat the Packers in the NFC Championship game. I sold an Aaron Rodgers Bowman Chrome Bronze Refractor Rookie Auto (ungraded) during the week prior to the game for like $900. I ship it out. He gets it prior to the game, tells me he loves it, and thanks me for the quick shipping. The weekend comes, and they lose. Just because of all of the #@#@#@#@ I've heard of happening (like the other stories in this thread), I held on to the money through the entire next week in case he filed a case and I had to give it back. The first week comes and goes, and then the Super Bowl comes and goes, so I think I'm good, and I spend the money. But you know what's coming... About a month after the initial sale, I get an email from Paypal requesting a return for "Item not as described" because the card had a "crimp in it along the back edge." I fought it tooth and nail trying to explain that it was buyers remorse because of the loss and that this stuff happens all the time and they should stop allowing it (I even told them they should hire a sportscard expert to rule on these situations), but as we all know, the seller NEVER wins with paypal. I got a few canned emails and that was it. I didn't have the money in my account, so Paypal takes it from my bank account which also didn't have enough at the time and I got an overdraft from it. Then of course, I resell the card when I get it back and it brings $725. So with the depreciation and overdraft fee, this jackwagon cost me over $200.

Onepocketj, Im assuming this is the card?
Out of morbid curiosity, what are those marks around the midsection of the card? Is the card bending inside the case and touching the inside?
Im sorry you had this experience. There is no legitimate reason to return a graded card unless thew slab is cracked, broken, or scratched to hell and beyond.
Your card does not appear to exhibit any of those characteristics.
No reason to stop collecting.

How about the guys who try to buy your expensive raw or RCR cards who then quickly ship to Beckett with 48 hour turnaround with a “not to encapsulate” unless meets their minimum and then decide to return if does not meet their expectations? Too much shadiness...if it’s a graded card and slabbed what’s there to discuss...we have ebay short term loans with no penalty to those selling items they do not have, those who buy hold and hope or dump, and the schemes I’m sure are deeper and more desperate and I’m just scratching the surface...oh wait, surface scratch equals return, bad choice of words.

Thanks guys. Funny that this guy has logged in the last two days but won't post or answer my messages.
Talked to Paypal today. Not optimistic but feel a little better. I told the guy I sold a football card before the Super Bowl and the team lost and now the loser wants to return the card. The rep said "Was it a Tom Brady rookie?" His next question was "was it graded?"
So at least they have a clue what it's about.

selling cards during the season especially during the postseason is always iffy. I won a stephen curry auction from this dude when the warriors were playing the thunder and were down in the series 3 games to 1. it took me a couple days to pay and before you know it, the warriors were coming back. guy changed his mind. I told him he earned some bad card karma and that it was going to come back and bite him. a year later he sells a brady contenders 9.5 for 13k. If he sold later he would have got 50k.

Are people not allowed to return items they bought from those two sellers?
Seeing as it's a consignment, how would returns work if they already paid out the owner?

The "buyer's remorse" real reason behind "item is not as described" is disheartening but an epidemic on eBay with collectibles. Buyers have been known to forceably manipulate get eBay to side with them by simply either stating the parcel was empty accusing the seller of fraud, or actually physically damaging the product themselves to them claim it's damaged.
The best and only thing you can really do is not fight it, you'll end up having to give the money back and get negative feedback and possibly either damaged goods or a parcel that's empty yourself (be sure to video record the opening of the parcel when it's returned to you as somewhat leading evidence to any fraud)
If you simply get the card back and issue the refund (and yes, you'll get buyers who will also #@#@#@#@#@#@ and Moan about how you also owe them their shipping and return shipping back and will be out of pocket $10 or so, a true slap in the face), then you can move on with your life. It's up to you to then later "name names", and put them on blast on message boards, but I'd say try to handcuff positive feedback first so there's no retaliation of negative feedback and document all communication, typically these buyers slip and you can coerce a confession from them via eBay messenger when you ask the reasons behind the return and rationalize or question the reasons.
Buyers have to be careful of their activities, I've heard urban legends of some pretty intense revenge tactics that some sellers end up doing. The buyers should realize that the sellers do have the buyer's address, so "anything goes" when you have a disgruntled situation and a vengeful heart.

If this one example is making you leave the hobby then you might as well not have any kind of hobby. There are people like this in every hobby and in every aspect of life.

No, Im referring to the marks that I have circled.
They are "blotchy" looking.
https://sportscardalbum.com/c/d9p3698c.jpg (https://sportscardalbum.com/card/d9p3698c/n-a)
Not endorsing the buyers actions by any means, but I once returned an Urlacher Bowman Chrome refractor that had similar marks. It was a BGS 9, but there were blotches on the card that were not visible in the pictures. When I got the card in hand it looked as if the blotches formed from some sort of deterioration after the fact. I believe that it may be a defect or issue with the chrome surfacing. Similar deterioration has happened with 1999 contenders cards that are encapsulated.
My transaction was an ebay sale though, and the seller accepted 30 day returns, so there was no issue.

That's the nice thing about selling through them. They absorb the returns/headache. Once the item is sold, you just collect the check.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the card. And if the Patriots won, there is 0 percent chance that the dispute would have been filed. The dispute has 0 to do with the card. The fact that the guy has logged on every day and won't respond to messages or the thread tells you all you need to know about him.

I can't really judge anything from the photos. I was merely pointing out that I had a similar issue with a refractor from that same set. As someone who has probably returned less than 5 items I have bought from ebay over the course of thousands of transactions, I am not one to return slabbed cards, but my particular case it appears the card deteriorated after slabbing.
I however trust the OP is representing the card and in this case it's just the photos. Sounds like the buyer has a rep for doing similar things.

Not saying you are, just observing what can be seen from the photo. That said, if I was buying it, I would ask about that and request additional photos. That could've make this situation nonexistent if it wasn't a case of buyer's remorse (which I doubt).

In this case it cost the seller $67.50 + shipping and insurance. So say $80?
COMC would have cost him $130 if he chose to cash out.
Seems like a lot if you base it off 1 card ,but over the long run I've found it to be worth it. I had $55,000 in sales with 0 returns, a couple trips to the PO, no waiting on payments or npb's, and made up all of what I would have lost flipping cards here and there. I've also bought a few nice PC items.
