I have seen so many different answers to this question that I do not know what to believe.
I bought an item from Probstein. I want to wait as long as possible to pay in order to possibly receive combined shipping. I emailed Probstein and they told me 10 days which I thought was against eBay rules.
How long can I wait to pay?

Varies from seller to seller. Ultimately all that will matter is when the seller decides to open an Unpaid Item Case which gives you a hard deadline.

Ebay basically says minimum of 2 days. After 48 hours a seller can open a case. After that it is at sellers discretion on how long. Once a case is opened you have 4 days to pay per ebay, anytime after that a seller can close it or give you more time if desired.
My question is - how do you think 10 days is against the rules?

This is clear. I don't know exactly what eBay rules are and I thought I could spend lest time getting an answer posting here rather than searching on Google.

Its up to each seller, the real minimum Ebay allows is 6 days which is 2 days plus the 4 days after a claim is opened. I think the only real rule on time is after 32 daysa sellercan no longer open a claim. The combined shipping setting that sellers can use allows for combined shipping up to 30 days.

Once, around early November, I waited 2 weeks with probstein... but that's because I was going to do combined shipping but a card I bid on got shilled from $80 to my max of $350 by a 0 feedback bidder. They relisted the card and after I won it the second time, and subsequently paid $100 so $20 higher :(, then I paid and got my combined shipping! Just message them a bunch.
However, then I got put on ebays naughty list. The next 4 items I won on a Friday from various sellers all had NPB cases opened on me on Sunday, which hadn't happened previously! I also was not given any discounted (5%, 10%, 15%) ebay bucks offers for the rest of that year.
Best to pay on time, but just message them and they'll give you some leeway!

"Correlation doesn't imply causation" applies well here.

Pretty sure neither of those are related. Many sellers myself included open cases after 2 days So if you won on Friday and still had not paid on Sunday there is a possibility they opened a claim. As far as the offers go, I have 2 IDs and one never gets them, the other gets one about every 3 or 4 months.
Id guess you have at least a month to pay. I had a buyer that won an item and paid almost three weeks later.
It really depends on how the seller proceeds and if/when they cancel a sale.

well, I rarely had any unpaid item cases against me before. Very rare. Then, all of a sudden I got slapped with 4. Very coincidental then, but still suspect. I do know some sellers have it set up automatically after 2 days so I don't doubt it either way.
Secondly, I was getting every ebay promotion offered up until that point. Then, that happened, and bam, no more promotions. Since January 1st, I started getting all the offers again as if they removed me from their list. Once again, coincidental, but very suspect.

Amazed you waited that long.
I pay immediately unless I win while I'm asleep, in which case I pay when I wake up. It takes two clicks with the app. But I also ship same day or next day.
I can't understand buyers who take more than a day to pay and don't communicate a word to the seller. If you're waiting for combined shipping, or an eBay bucks offer, or a eBay discount, or are going to be without internet access when the auction ends, just say something.
