It's looking quality. Glad they moved away from last year's horrible rookie ticket autos...could barely see the autograph on half the cards.
On-card autos for the star players again...looks similar to the 1998/2000 design. I like it.

Those quad front/back autos look crazy, but I see no real love for Gronkowski or Hernandez, so I'll probably stay away. I've never been a fan of Contenders anyhow...
Other than some of the high end stuff coming out, this is probably the next stuff I really want to break. Just crossing my fingers it turns out nice! lol

I'm sure they're including RC autos of those two. And Contenders is always a top rookie product.

Contenders is my favorite product every year. I used to build the entire Rookie Ticket auto set, but the last 4 years, I've just bought a 12-box case & ripped it.
Unfortunate it was delayed this year. It has released on time in early January every year except this year.

Me! I hope the put a Sam Shields auto in it. They started doing Andrew Quarless, so here is to being hopeful!

Contenders usually hold their value in the long term; not too sure what he's talking about. Perhaps their lack of inserts? But even then, most products don't include these players beyond base RCs...

I just got back into collecting but remember Contenders being a solid popular product. Going off of historical data of previous releases, does anyone know what the realistic price of this product will be upon release?
Only the Rookie Tickets. Those look phenominal I think. The rest is more typical Panini mediocrity design-wise. I think the Rookie Ink cards could be really nice if they are On-Card autos. But it would be perfect without the blue triangle shadings and blue and brown bars over the player picture. Simple and clean is where my tastes lean. Am I the only one who thinks that quad looks ridiculous? Dont get me wrong I would love to have for the monitary value, but the design of it is awful.

I like the tradition of this product. Playoff was the very first company to have autographed rookie cards. Of course, a few years later, other companies followed suit (UD, Topps). But keep in mind that Playoff started the whole thing back in 1998.
Now, the product isn't what it used to be in terms of value. It used to be a high-end product, and now with more premium products on the market(National Treasures, Exquisite, etc), Contenders is more of an upper-mid end product.
Contenders is also unique in that it is an autograph-only product (not many products like this are still around). Since I am not a big mem collector at all, I appreciate this.
It may not seem unique today, but over a decade ago in 1998, Playoff did something truly revolutionary by combining arguably the two most popular concepts in card collecting: autographs & rookie cards.

The sell sheet is misleading. The rookie ticket autos are on foil board again, making the autos hard to see (again). Look for a few of the actual pics Panini has posted of the signed cards.
Also I dont see anything about on-card autos for star (non-rookie) players. Those are all stickers again.

The closer it gets to the Superbowl, the less I care about current year FB cards. If this released on time id be all over it, but now? Meh.

Only Upper Deck has a collegiate license so there shouldn't be any College Ticket Autos in this years. I wish there was though as I love to collect those.

When the previews first came out, I was REALLY excited. But then, Panini panini-nized this set. They put the autos on foil stock - as usual, not getting the fact that permanent markers signed on foil NEVER work. This should have stayed on flat stock, and you wouldnt have seen streaky autos that look like this:
How Much More Can This Get Screwed Up? (http://www.sportscardsuncensored.com/?p=3549)
2009 was a complete disaster, both in the terrible design AND the bubbly autos, and I think that 2010 is shaping up to be at least a FAIL in the autos.

I think you are wrong. In this video, look very closely at the Tebow Autos on the Rookie Tickets. They don't appear to be "bubbly" at all. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovVaVLjLcGI)
I think Panini fixed this problem.

On-card foild = fugly compared to even the silver sticker autos from a few years back. Man I miss SP Authentic and Exquisite in pro unis :(. I'm going to just save for NT.

Save for Five Star, it is shaping up to be a ridiculously awesome product. Who knows though, Topps doesnt have a great track record when it comes to these types of things.

I think its too early to say its fixed, because that Mathews looks awfully streaky, and I am guessing they picked one of the best to scan.

If the Contenders are on foil - so the bubble is going to happen again - then I'm going back to SPA even if it is in college uniforms.
Maybe NT if they can fix that bubble problem - last years NT were hard to find with clean autos.

Its why Upper Deck always uses the flat stock without gloss for their on card products. Panini always did stickers for everything so they were pretty clueless on this stuff last year. Lets hope they learned their lesson, but from what I heard, they havent changed much about their production tactics. Im guessing this means we are going to continue to have issues.

In that video, I counted at least 5 different Tebow autos that they showed and the all looked perfect to me. And I think we can tell much better from a video than from a scan.
And speaking of the Mathews, let's compare it to this one:
http://i304.photobucket.com/albums/nn194/masterpattie/RyanM.jpg
This is is streaky too, but yet, it's not on foil-board. Rather, it's just on plain stock. Sometimes autos just turn out streaky, regardless of the surface. It could be the marker running out of ink, or simply the way a player signs. There are a lot of factors besides the surface.
Where did you get that photo of the Mathews Contenders auto for your blog? Please provide a link.
I think you jumped the gun by stating that the on-card autos have the same problem as last year. You don't have enough evidence to make such a conclusion yet. Personally, I think Panini solved this problem for Contenders this year.

If they would have added the white gradient to the bottom of the autos it would have looked alot better.

I had a number of 2009 contenders autos come back with perfect auto from BGS. The real issue was always the edges or corners.

Panini hasn't released a checklist yet, to my knowledge. However, you can be 100% certain that McCourty will have a Rookie Ticket auto. The big question is, will he be a redemption? He has been a redemption in recent Panini releases so we'll see...

BO has indeed updated this. Another delayed product. :(
Contenders always came out on time in early January. What is making this year so much different? They had on-card autos last year and it didn't delay the product.
Oh well...
