My last PWE out cost me .97 to send. Does this seem pretty on par with what you guys are spending? Seems like a lot to me, and was wondering what the cheapest way to ship is.
Thanks in advance.

I send in bubble mailers which is $2.19 average with a DC# added to it!! That's usually 1 or 2 cards in toploaders & protected. Also shipping through PP or USPS online may be cheaper cause PP the DC# cost only 19 cents.

I was just wondering about the guys who sell cards on ebay for like .99 cents and free shipping. How does that not cost them money? What is the cheapest way to send just one or two cards?

Not sure how anyone can sell a card at .99 and ship for free. If you take out ebay and paypal fees there is almost nothing left.
Along the same lines, why does paypal shipping charge $1.41 (1.22 postage + .19 DC) to ship a 1 ounce 4x7 padded mailer? I checked on the USPS site and you can ship a 1 ounce large envelope with the following limits for .88.
Size limits:
- Rectangular
- No more than 12 inches high by 15 inches long by 3/4 inches thick
- Must not be rigid and must be uniformly thick (see package prices)
Looks like PayPal charges the package price (1.22) no matter what what you are mailing...

I usually ship my items for .44 cents, the cost of 1 stamp....if you use bubble mailers it automatically becomes a "parcel" due to its thickness, while i use bubbles for my high end items, to save some money ive been using the same size manilla envelopes without the bubbles, if the package isnt thick and just one or two cards in a top loader it counts as a envelope and only cost .44 cents...hope this helps, if i doesnt make sense shoot me a PM

Do you think I could throw a card in a soft plastic case (like the 9 card holders, but single slips) and put 2 think pieces of cardboard around that? If that went into an envelope, would it still be .44?
thanks

probably did what I did, if an item sells for .99 ebay only takes like .8 cents plus .44 for the stamp, so I guess the seller is still bringin in .47 cents which adds up sellin base cards especially if u can list for free

I wouldnt put the cardboard around it, but i guess use your judgement...if it doesnt look much thicker than the original envelope looked u shud be fine...plus these envelopes are alot cheaper than the bubbles, there like 12 for $3 at staples

Paypal charges the package rate because that is the only way that you can ship with DC! The $0.88 size is not allowed to have DC attached to it. That is the way I understand it.

Thats right. For DC the package must either be 3/4" thick OR be Priority/Express mail. By rule, anything 3/4" thick can't be sent regular first class or first class large envelope.
Technically you can send 1 card in a PWE for $0.44 but I can't imagine many people would survive doing that on ebay on a regular basis. If the combined cost of the card + S/H is under $1, I'd expect it to be a PWE and would personally stay away.
The $0.88 large envelope rate works for a bubble mailer as long as its a regular top loader, but can't have a DC with it and usually any kind of thicker card that requires a thicker top loader will make the package too rigid to be eligible for the large envelope rate.
The safest way to ship is First Class Parcel which starts at $1.22, because you can add additional padding / packing material to the package as thickness does not matter. However, to add a DC to this service (required for online shipping at a cost of $0.19, or $1.41 total for 1 ounce) the package must be at least 3/4" thick or you risk the package getting bumped up to Priority Mail and either be sent back or delivered with postage due. Even for packages that don't quite meet the thickness requirement, its fairly rare for this to happen, but it seems like as time goes on its starting to happen more and more.

Are you sure it wasn't $0.98?
That would make sense if you send a PWE with additional cardboard for padding, or an extra thick card. $0.78 for a PWE that weighs up to 3 oz and then a $0.20 surcharge for it being too rigid and thus non-machinable.
Otherwise, I'm not sure how they'd get to exactly $0.97 as I don't see any first-class options that would be exactly that number.

I think the post office needs to relax on the DC stuff....you should be able to put that on anything you want...they make a lot of money with it just taking a couple of seconds to scan stuff.

Anyone shipping in a PWE without a Top Loader deserves every negative rating they get. If someone is too cheap to pay an extra $0.20 for the non-machinable surcharge, they shouldn't be shipping cards in the first place. Shipping PWE is being cheap to begin with, but shipping PWE without a top loader is just inexcusable IMO.

for 1-4 cheapie (not curved chrome or thick cards) you can get away with a pwe and a rigid card holder for 2 stamps or less. see here: Ultra Pro Semi-Rigid Card Holder - 200ct Box - $12.99 : Blowout Cards - Sports Cards and Trading Cards Wholesale Online Store (http://www.blowoutcards.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=118_237&products_id=4311) or the graded ones that are just like this (will hold more cards). I've been doing this for sportlots and it is really no heavier or thicker than a regular holiday or birthday card that has a gift card in it. You should label the envelope w/do not bend or fold or pictures (something to that effect) also just make sure you have a piece of paper around the holder to prevent a lot of movement and that will help keep a flat surface and should prevent a lot of catch ups in the po machines. Until I get bad feedback this seems to be the way to do it cheaper. Otherwise I purchased a box of 500 bubblemailers to use.

PWE non-machinable for $0.64..although I would only ship via that method with approval of the person receiving the card.
My PO actually has $0.64 stamps for just this purpose.

I ship PWE with machineable surcharge, 64 cents total, and I get nailed on shipping, im on some kind of probation. Too many collectors thinking there card needs to come packaged from the gods. If I showed you a card that shipped PWE (w/ top loader) Vs bubble mailer you could not tell a difference, there's no damage to the card.

I wouldn't send any card in a pwe to begin with. You are going to have problems. Most people who buy a card want it to get to them in good shape. A lot of times cards get damaged when they go through the sorters. If you want people to keep coming back your best bet is to send in a bubble mailer. Don't be surprised when someone sends a card back and wants a refund because it got bent to crap in a PWE!

Im using penny sleeve, topload, cut a decoy card in half and taped to each side of topload and then a teambag. They weigh out at 0.8 to 0.9 ounces yet are still costing more

I would watch this bud. Although I think the 3/4" rule is dumb as well, it is the policy. Just put a peanut or some bubble wrap.
My postmaster and I had an argument on this about 6 months ago. Anything not 3/4" must be shipped parcel post or priority for DC. If your local PO starts to notice this they will start checking all ur packages and u will be getting postage due on ur shipments as well as ur deliveries.
It happened to me with about 20 packages I sent and then they nailed me for about 7 incoming packages that sellers sent me. It sucked as I owed $3.25 per package which was the difference between the first class parcel and priority costs.

Yep I literally just had this happen to me a few minutes ago. I put two decoys around a penny sleeve and team bag and got the "rigid" thing from the PO
I never ship PWE but these were just some freebies for some members and they cost me $1.95 each. I don't really care about the $ but I found it accessive. I coulda put them in a bubble mailer with DC for $1.64 if I printed labels.

Most of the base cards I send are in PWE. Notthing worth more than a couple bucks. I put them in a top loaded, wrap it in bubble wrap and then put it in an envelop with 1 44 cent stamp on it. Haven't had any issues with the post office yet. I have never had anyone complain about the condition of the card, but I will replace the card or give a refund if the card is damaged. Its a chance I'm willing to take when sending PWE.

I think its the decoy card thats causing the issue. Weight is obviously fine, but think the new thickness is really the issue. The assumption with machined first class mail is it can do the 3 or 4" bend rule (this can be found online on their website), but this is where most of the mail goes through their automated system that standard mail can go through.
For what your being charged thats a non machineable parcel rate.
You can still do a card in a PWE, but I'd recommend using the prosavers (used typically for sending stuff in to be graded). As they're thin, can bend (and likely still protect the card), but for me if I'm selling/trading, I'm just doing a bubble mailer and doing the first class non machineable parcel with dc.

The postmaster told me even if it was just in a topload that it would still be considered rigid and still cost the 1.95. Awesome thing is I just sent like a dozen out last week the exact same way with 65 cent stamps on them that went through fine and I already have gotten positive feedback on. I tried doing PWE but alot of people keep saying that postage is owed to get the card. To send PWE the package must be bendable and some PO will try and bend the package to check this. You may be able to get away with it for awhile but sooner or later it will cost you. I may also depend on your local post office but those are the rules. Also bubble mailers do not protect the card from bending. Put the card between to things such as cardboard, spacers or old toploaders. I cost me 1.64$ to send up to 3 oz with DC.

I wish people would STOP putting a packing peanut in bubble mailers...i've received at least 10+ damaged cards due to this and one bent print plate. If you have to use something then put some paper around the card or even a plastic grocery bag or something that is not going to indent in to the card. I get pissed off every time i open a package and there is a stupid lonely peanut in there.

I have over 350 positive feedback on sportlots and most sales are sent in the semi rigids in a pwe and not one complaint or notice of money owed. I have a do not bend stamp and use 1 stamp for one card and 2 for 2-4 cards. I wrap it up in the invoice (fold over in thirds) and use the large envelopes (11x4 maybe?) This I only do on sportlots for base cards that are going for less than $1 basically. I can ship around 25 cards at 5oz or less for under $2 and that is in a team bag, soft sleeves, 2 dummy cards, 000 bubble mailer.
ebay is always bubble mailer, and cards/items that are going to sell for under a $3 or so are not worth the trouble of selling on ebay since you will basically in the end up a few cents ahead if at all.
I also hardly ever go in to the PO and wait in line to send stuff out, I don't want to give the the satisfaction of ripping me off when I know what the policies are and they just want to push flat rate on to everything to make extra money.
all of this is just what I do, everyone is different, but going to the PO will just make matters worse for you

I'm a little surprised that many of you guys don't have a problem shipping a card in a PWE.
I swear every time I'm on YouTube there's some guy whining about PWEs and how much he HATES ebay...
Kinda hypocritical if you ask me....the only reason they continue buying on ebay is because they know they won't get the same great deals elsewhere.
Personally, if I sell any base/insert/low-end Auto for under $10 it's going on a PWE.
...and until now....thankfully, no problems!

Buy 500 x000 or 250 x00 bubble mailers at .10-.13 per bubble mailer instead of using plain white envelopes.
Then send via 1st class/package... if you use paypal to ship the package up to 3 ounces then you get Free D/C with that and the cost is only $1.64 or so. 3 ounces is alot in top loader world. You can generally ship 5-6 skinny cards with top loaders for 3 ounces, 1 graded psa card, 2 medium thickness cards, or 1 super thick card. Obviously, everything varies.
This is the probably the safest cheapest way to ship. Those using PWE are limited what they can send and potentially higher chance to get a card exposed to heat which can ruin a cards surface. Most people just look at corners, but using a bubble mailer will help protect the surface of a card too because of the extra padding and the ability for you to use the thicker plastic/cases.
I'd advise only using PWE when both parties agree to it and only if the cards being shipped are insignificant.

I've been shipping out low end cards on eBay for about a year now and I ALWAYS use a bubble mailer. When you use eBay, it give an option for charging shipping. USE IT. I charge $2.50 for shipping 1 card out. This covers the mailer, postage, ink for my printer, the labels for shipping, and my time to list on eBay and ship out the cards. Never had a complaint about overcharging for shipping. I will NEVER ship in a plain white envelope. Ask your mailman what happens to those envelopes once they are being sorted. Also keep in mind, they are sorted about 3 or 4 times before they arrive at the destination. Too many stops for something bad to happen.
I ship out in a bubble mailer and ship First Class. Rarely does it go over $2 to ship. If you use the Paypal shipping service for eBay sales, it actually gives you a discounted postage cost plus DC is either free or around $.18, depends on the weight. I bought one of the USPS Postage Scales and use that. Just remember to weigh the mailer as well as the card and dummy cards if you use them.
As stated before, buy the bubble mailers in bulk. I bought 250 for about $40. Comes to $.16 per mailer. I WAS buying the 10 packs at walmart and was paying about $.50 per mailer. Much cheaper and now I don't have to stop at Walmart for more mailers.
I was always taught "If you want to do something, take the time and do it right." Buy a scale, buy bubble mailers in bulk, buy Paypal shipping labels (find these on eBay. They're cheap and make shipping faster and easier), and stop using envelopes. Do it right and you'll have repeat business. Been using eBay for over 10 years and have NEVER had a negative.

$.99 sellers are banking on multiple purchases from the same buyer. No doubt if you buy one or two cards it will come in a PWE.
I used to charge $1.75 shipping for the first item and any additional are free. A LOT of buyers buy 4,5, or 20 when they additional items are free.

I was just wondering about the guys who sell cards on ebay for like .99 cents and free shipping. How does that not cost them money? What is the cheapest way to send just one or two cards?
I have looked in to this for a while... and this is what i have come up with...
First off.. most of the sellers that are selling for .99cents free shipping is mostly selling random base cards. Its a crime if they sell any auto or jersey card or really any high end single in a PWE... here is the break down
for the cheapest possible way we will use one of our free listings
if our item sold for .99
listing fee.........0.00
Final Value fee...0.07
Paypal Fee .......0.10(You can get your paypal fees reduced if you request them to change it to 5% and .05cents..there is no cap to the 5% though)
for a total of .....0.17 in fees
SHIPPING
Top Loader ....0.06 (by in bulk on ebay or online somewhere this is what i can get them for but..I have a resale license so i can shop wholesale...my LCS told me he gets them for .03...have no clue how.
Penny Sleeve ...0.01
Envelope.....0.02 (buy in Bulk on ebay)
Stamp ......0.45
Tape....this is hard to break down but i think its important to tape the seal of the envelope just in case it opens during transit.
Shipping charges .54
Fees 0.17
Ship 0.54
you come out with a 0.26 cent profit not including the cost of the card...
The real trick to it is... get people to buy in bulk...lets say one person buys 7 cards from you at 99 cents per card
At this point i would not risk it and send it in a bubble with DC First Class...all with top loaders and and penny sleeves...the most you can send in a mailer before going over 3oz is around 7 or 8 cards (buy a cheap scale its worth the piece of mind)
After fees and shipping you just sold 7 common cards that are just taking up space in you office for a profit of $3.75... PM if you want me to break down how i got this number.
I have done it both ways bubble mailer and PWE and i have never had a issue with either.....just keep in mind that commom cards are the only thing that i would ever consider shipping in a PWE....oh and one last thing...i have sent over the past year plenty of commons in PWE and have never had the PO tell me it was more than one stamp... and have never had a issue with damage....however i have had 4 cards shipped to me in one PWE and they were damaged and thats frustrating...you have to be smart dont send more than 1 or 2 commons in a PWE at a time and you will be fine and also dont hesitate to tell your buyer he has a option to want a bubble for a extra charge....communication goes along way
hope this helps

Man, this post makes me feel really good, and if it wasn't for my desire to support local business I could make even more money using paypal shipping. I buy all my bubble mailers at $.01-.02 for #000 and $.05-.10 for #0. I usually buy 500 - 250 at a time respectively.
Also, toploaders I buy in bulk as well. I try to pay no more than $1.00/ pack of 50 regular toploaders, and I buy soft sleeves by the case of 100. So shipping supplies for me costs no more than $.25/card. However, I do all my shipping through the post office and pay a minimum of $2.80/package with the new shipping rates. I charge $2.75 for shipping Domestic and $3.25 International for cards. My packages with insurance are costing $3.80 or so. However, I only insure packages over $10.00. I found insurance provides the added touch that keeps customers from coming back.

I didn't know this was possible. If this is possible, I would advise that all bulk sellers of lower end items where the items end for $3dlvd or under to do this ASAP. Remember normally Paypal takes out $0.30 plus 3%.

$.99 sellers are banking on multiple purchases from the same buyer. No doubt if you buy one or two cards it will come in a PWE.
I used to charge $1.75 shipping for the first item and any additional are free. A LOT of buyers buy 4,5, or 20 when they additional items are free.
Good Point. These sellers need buyers to buy multiple items for this model to survive.

I ship everything in bubble mailer, some with and some without peanuts. The trick is to not put the peanut on top of the card.

Pay pal fees would be about 33 cents, not 10.

Where do you get your Bubble mailers for $.01 or $.02??? That would be insane to get them at those prices. That is 500 mailers for $5/$10 dlvd? Is this correct? THe lowest prices I have seen for a case of 000 is right around .09-.12 per...
I am interested in that as well. The cheapest I have seen is between .08 and .10 each when you buy 500....

I buy from ebay seller "Just Pounds & Ounces" Never had a problem with them. I always buy during holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving & Christmas when there are less people buying items. I alway sneak away from the crowd a little to get a breather and to find good deals on ebay after dinner. I've paid $.001/bubble mailer before getting my bubble mailers one thanksgiving. I buy 2 different types of bubble mailers #000 and #0. I use #0 for larger lots & toy sales. & #000 for 1-4 cards or gaming cards.

this is just not true...again you must go to paypal and request to have your account be changed to a "merchant" account....its free and it will drop your fees...the rate is .05cents and 5%... but there is a catch the 5% is un capped....so if you sold a card for a 1000 bucks they would take $50.05

I'm not sure if its even less with a perferred paypal account or not. I have spent over $1,000 a year with them so I have a Paypal Perferred account for 2012. I'm not sure if that gives you anything but more spending power.
